Genshin Impact: I'm just a mortal

Chapter 230: Chapter 229: Nothing Has Changed

"Ei, what's wrong?" Yuxie asked when Ei remained silent for a long time.

After coming to her senses, Ei still didn't speak, only smiling gently as she continued to eat the grilled fish.

After a long pause, she finally spoke again:

"It's delicious."

Hearing this, Yuxie tried a bite himself. Honestly, he thought the taste was average.

"Sorry, the conditions are limited, so it turned out like this," he said apologetically.

"I think it's very delicious." Ei continued to smile gently, a smile that wasn't often seen on her face.

With that, Yuxie said nothing more, simply returning the smile, and the two quietly continued eating the grilled fish.

In silence, the fish was finished.

Time slowly passed, and evening approached.

The setting sun painted the sky in fiery hues, with clouds burning like fire. The twilight illuminated all of Inazuma, casting shimmering light over the sea.

Yuxie and Ei sat side by side on the beach, wordlessly watching the sunset.

What Yuxie didn't notice was that Ei would occasionally glance at him, her eyes filled with emotions even she hadn't fully understood.

Time passed, and Ei wasn't sure when she returned to the Shogun's residence, only knowing it was already dark. She wandered through the courtyard and corridors before arriving at a small house, walking around to the back. There, she sat under the eaves, quietly watching the moonlit sea in the distance.

"Where did you go today?" her sister, Makoto, asked softly.

"I went to find Yuxie," Ei replied truthfully.

"Mm." Makoto nodded gently, then asked, "Ei, what do you think of Yuxie?"

The question made Ei fall silent. It was something she had been contemplating, but after much thought, she still didn't have an answer.

Sometimes, answers to certain questions take a long time to find, or perhaps there is no answer at all, or maybe the answer is clear, but one just hasn't noticed.

"I..." Ei hesitated. "I don't know."

"Really, how could you not know?" Makoto turned to look at Ei, smiling gently.

Faced with her sister's tender gaze, Ei felt a sense of confusion.

In front of her sister, Ei always felt like an immature little girl.

"But I really don't know."

"I see..." Makoto didn't continue, instead turning to look at the sea. "Don't worry, leave it to time; time will give you the answer."

"Time..." Ei repeated softly, also gazing at the endless sea.

........

Ei returned to the Tenshūkaku, and Yu Xie should head back to the residence.

The streets were bustling with people, lively and noisy. Everyone was discussing the end of the war, and the faces of the townspeople were filled with smiles.

As Yu Xie walked, he suddenly heard the orderly sound of footsteps ahead. He stopped, noticing that the crowd had parted, giving way to the path.

Following the sound, he saw a military procession advancing, with the citizens applauding.

"General Sasayuri, thank you for your hard work!"

"Welcome home, General Sasayuri!"

Amidst the cheers of the townspeople, the leading general, Sasayuri, walked with grace, yet showed humility.

When Yu Xie heard his name, he paused, though not surprised. Through the crowd, he watched Sasayuri in her armor.

Suddenly, their eyes met, and after a brief pause, Sasayuri issued an order to his troops.

"Continue as planned."

The troops kept moving forward, while Sasayuri turned and walked toward Yu Xie, stopping before him.

"I couldn't believe it until I saw you in person," he said.

"I couldn't believe it either," Yu Xie replied.

Although Yu Xie had experienced similar situations many times before, he still felt somewhat uneasy. The other person knew him, yet he had no memory of them whatsoever.

"You haven't changed at all," Sasayuri remarked as he looked him over. "Exactly the same as before."

Yu Xie glanced down at himself. He had no idea what he looked like or what his preferences were in his past life. But since Sasayuri said so, it seemed that his previous self must have been quite similar to his current self.

Memories are important, but even without them, Yu Xie didn't think he'd completely change as a person.

"Did the old me like to eat Jade Parcels?"

"What?" Sasayuri was taken aback by Yu Xie's sudden question.

"It's a dish from Liyue, one that I really enjoy in this life," Yu Xie quickly explained.

"...I don't know about that, but I do remember the old you could eat even dishes made by Ei," Sasayuri recalled with a smile.

"Really?" Yu Xie hesitated.

"Of course, why would I lie to you?" Sasayuri's laughter grew louder. "Alright, I have to lead my troops back. We'll talk another day!"

"Okay," Yu Xie nodded.

Sasayuri returned to his troops, continuing to lead them forward.

Yu Xie stood still, pondering Sasayuri's words.

Did he really used to eat Ei's cooking?

Wasn't Ei bad at cooking?

"What's on your mind?" a sweet voice suddenly interrupted Yu Xie's thoughts.

He turned to see a beautiful face.

"Chiyo?"

The lovely oni girl, Chiyo, had appeared beside him without him noticing, tilting her head with a bright, enchanting smile.

"What did Sasayuri say to you just now?"

"He said... I haven't changed at all, that I'm just the same as before," Yu Xie replied.

"Mm..." Chiyo looked at Yu Xie, "You really haven't changed."

"I don't know if I've changed," Yu Xie smiled faintly.

"Trust me, you haven't changed," Chiyo said with a smile.

Hearing Chiyo's confident tone, Yu Xie looked at her without saying more, just smiling.

Chiyo continued to smile, "It's getting late. Let's go back together."

"Go back together?" Yu Xie was slightly surprised.

"Yes, let's go to the Kitsune Saiguu palace together," Chiyo replied with a smile.
