Chapter 22: Stone and Flame

Aiden and FieryLady crouched low on the rooftop, scanning the desolate street below. As the tension in the air thickened, FieryLady's eyes lit up when she spotted a vehicle sitting idly on the road—a sleek, armored car, clearly left behind by another player.

"Bingo," she said with a smirk. "We've got wheels."

"Finally, some speed," Aiden replied, hopping down from the roof with ease.

FieryLady followed, her fiery hair trailing behind her like a comet. The pair approached the car cautiously, weapons at the ready in case it was a trap. After a quick scan of the surrounding area, they climbed inside. Aiden took the wheel, and with the press of a button, the engine roared to life.

"Next stop: the city center," FieryLady said, gripping her rifle tightly.

As Aiden drove through the winding roads of the island, the scenery shifted rapidly—from dense forests to abandoned suburbs and, finally, the towering skyline of the main city. The tension between them was palpable as they neared their destination, both knowing they were heading straight into the lion's den.

"Expect company," FieryLady said, her voice steady but alert.

Aiden nodded. "Wouldn't be fun otherwise."

They parked the car in a shadowed alley and moved cautiously through the streets. The city was eerily quiet, but the distant sound of gunfire echoed through the air. Spotting a sturdy-looking building, they decided to make it their temporary base.

"Inside, quick," FieryLady urged.

Once inside, Aiden glanced around. The building had solid walls, but the open entrance left them vulnerable. He crouched near a pile of rubble, placing his hand on the cold stone.

"What are you doing?" FieryLady asked, intrigued.

"Improvising," Aiden replied. With a surge of energy, the rubble began to shift and reshape, the stones merging together to form a solid wall that sealed off the entrance entirely.

FieryLady let out a low whistle. "Nice technique."

Aiden shrugged, a faint smirk on his lips. "So-so."

They climbed to the rooftop, positioning themselves behind cover. Aiden set up his sniper rifle while FieryLady kept her assault rifle at the ready. Minutes passed before they spotted movement: four players engaging in a chaotic firefight in the street below.

"Targets acquired," FieryLady whispered. "Take your pick."

Aiden steadied his aim, focusing on a player ducking behind a car for cover. His finger tightened on the trigger, and the shot rang out. The bullet found its mark, turning the player's head into a red mist before their body disintegrated into glowing light particles.

"Headshot," Aiden murmured.

The remaining three players immediately turned toward the source of the shot, scrambling for cover.

"They know we're here now," FieryLady said, firing a burst of bullets to keep them pinned. "Keep them busy."

Aiden nodded, placing his hand against the wall beside him. The stone rippled under his touch, forming a jagged spike. With a flick of his wrist, he hurled it toward the mailbox where one of the players was hiding.

Boom!

The spike hit its target, obliterating the mailbox and the player behind it in a violent explosion of rubble and light particles.

"Holy hell," FieryLady muttered, momentarily stunned. She glanced at Aiden. "You're full of surprises."

Aiden smirked. "Just getting started."

With the remaining two players pinned down, Aiden molded the wall beside him into a makeshift ramp, allowing them to descend to the adjacent building. From their new vantage point, they spotted two more players holed up in a nearby structure.

"Think they're safe in there?" FieryLady asked.

"Not for long," Aiden replied, touching the ground. The earth trembled as jagged stone spikes erupted from the ground, raining down on the building. The structure groaned under the assault, the spikes piercing through walls and windows until it resembled a giant porcupine. Inside, the players were caught in the devastation, their bodies disintegrating into light particles.

In the virtual coliseum, the audience erupted into cheers. The MC's voice boomed over the noise. "What a play! Did you see that? Those two players didn't stand a chance! What kind of skill is that?"

The crowd roared louder, chants of "Lukewarm! Lukewarm!" filling the air as a replay of Aiden's move played on the massive screens.

Back in the game, FieryLady stared at the ruined building, a mix of awe and apprehension on her face. "What a terrifying guy," she thought, glancing at Aiden.

"Let's keep moving," Aiden said, already descending the building.

They continued their hunt, eventually coming across another skirmish. Two players were locked in a heated battle.

"Let's split up," Aiden said. "I'll take the high ground."

As FieryLady moved in for a closer attack, her fists ignited in flames. She lunged at one of the players, delivering a fiery punch that sent a blast of flames rippling across the battlefield. The player cried out, quickly downing a healing vial before turning to her.

"You dare sneak attack me?" he growled, raising his weapon.

Meanwhile, Aiden crouched low, touching the ground. A surge of power launched him into the air like a rocket, his Overhaul ability propelling him high above the battlefield. He landed with a crash, sending shockwaves through the ground that knocked the combatants off balance.

FieryLady took advantage of the chaos, delivering a series of flaming punches that left her opponent scorched and staggered. Aiden, on the other hand, conjured a fan-shaped array of spikes, driving them into the ground. The two players caught in the trap were obliterated instantly, their bodies vanishing in a brilliant flash.

The remaining two players turned their focus on FieryLady, but Aiden quickly intervened. He molded the ground beneath one of them, creating stone bindings that immobilized the player. FieryLady finished off the other with a devastating flaming uppercut before turning to the bound player.

"Good teamwork," she said, drawing a blade. Without hesitation, she slit the player's throat, ending the fight.

Boom! The virtual coliseum erupted again, the crowd's cheers deafening. "What a show from Team LukewarmWater!" the MC shouted. "These two are unstoppable!"

Aiden glanced at FieryLady. "Ready for the next round?"

She smirked, wiping her blade. "Let's hunt."
