Chapter 77: Chapter 77: The Dragon Binder
"Big Black, what's wrong?"
In the next moment, a muffled groan escaped her lips as sharp pain pierced her nose, eyes, and mouth like razor blades. Blood gushed out relentlessly.
An oppressive force, one that only a superior being could emanate, gripped her mind and relentlessly crushed her self-esteem and consciousness. Yet, this wasn't her feeling—it was Big Black's state at that moment.
"I am the Dragon Binder! Submit, submit, submit, submit, submit!"
The ancient Valyrian chant seemed to materialize, like a mythical heavenly seal radiating countless golden beams. It carried the weight and majesty of the heavens, striking fiercely at the very soul of the black dragon.
Perhaps this was what Lady White Snake felt when she was subdued by Fahai's golden alms bowl.
An inexplicable sense of suffocation filled Dany, and she felt an urge to scream. And scream she did:
"I am the Mother of Dragons, the one true Dragon Queen! I command the black dragon, and my black dragon commands the world—"
Barely a moment earlier, atop the bridge of the Tranquility, a towering man with dark skin clutched an enormous black horn. When Euron Greyjoy snapped his fingers, the man, with the resolve of someone ready to die, blew the horn.
The obsidian horn, adorned with golden-red runes, turned fiery red as it sounded. Then it emitted a scorching, dazzling white light, akin to a blazing sun descending upon the Tranquility.
As Dany's soul merged with Big Black's, their combined roar echoed. Meanwhile, the hornblower's bear-like body trembled violently, and, just like Dany moments earlier, blood streamed from his eyes, nose, and mouth.
His condition was worse. His lips, scorched as if burned by fire, erupted with clusters of blisters the size of peas.
The blisters shimmered, bursting under the slightest pressure to release bright red blood.
"Hahaha! Do you see?" Euron noticed Dany's distress but paid no mind. He assumed her frail body couldn't withstand the horn's power.
"Mother of Dragons? Hahaha…" He laughed triumphantly. "Even the Mother of Dragons must bow to the Dragon Binder! There were countless Dragonlords in ancient Valyria, yet none dared rebel. Do you know why, my little queen?
Because the Valyrians forged the Dragon Binder to control their dragons. With it, every dragon within sight obeys its wielder's call. Like now—your three dragons are mine!"
As his laughter grew louder, the white and green dragons ceased their rampage. Beating their wings, they flew toward Euron as though summoned.
Simultaneously, Dany heard a chilling voice through Big Black: Come here. Devour this woman.
Hearing the command to eat Dany, Big Black's fury surged tenfold. He was ready to unleash his dragonfire.
"Calm down! There's still a blade at my neck!" Dany hastily reassured him. "Approach first, then find a chance to strike that bastard hard."
"Hahaha! The gods themselves must favor me! Successfully exploring Valyria for the first time in four centuries, and immediately finding the Dragon Binder to claim three dragons—what else could this be but destiny? The world has decreed I shall be king!"
Watching the three dragons obediently crawl toward him, Euron cackled wildly.
"Apologies, my queen, but only without their mother will they fully obey their Dragonfather."
He sheathed his sword and shoved Dany to the ground with force, then commanded the dragons:
"Tear her apart. Prove your loyalty to me!"
The green and white dragons writhed on the ground in agony, occasionally spewing small flames from their nostrils.
Big Black crouched low, growling defiantly but unmoving.
"Shred her! I am the Dragon Binder; all dragons must obey me!" Euron's piercing blue eyes took on a blood-red glow.
The glow wasn't an illusion—it was tangible, a manifestation of psychic power.
Seeing the white and green dragons cry out in increasing pain, Dany could bear it no longer.
"Big Black, kill him!"
Without warning, Big Black's head darted forward like lightning, unleashing a torrent of dragonfire as thick as a bowl. The flames engulfed Euron's face and chest in an instant.
"Arrgh!" Euron let out an inhuman scream, clutching his face as he staggered toward the ship's railing. He toppled overboard with a splash.
Turning her gaze to the plank, Dany saw dozens of bald pirates seizing weapons from centaurs and sailors, wreaking havoc.
Yet her side wasn't entirely defenseless. Though most of the centaurs and sailors had fallen, Khal Drogo and nine other centaur warriors wielded their curved blades valiantly, holding the line.
Thankfully, the horn's sound also affected the bald pirates, even though their ears were deafened. It was like watching amateurs clumsily battling geese—messy but manageable.
Dany exhaled deeply.
"Big Black, go—"
She was about to order him to kill the hornblower when the horn's sound abruptly stopped.
Looking up, she saw the hornblower in utter misery. Black smoke billowed from his mouth like a chimney. After swaying a few times, he dropped the horn, then collapsed onto the deck.
Though it seemed long, the entire sequence—from the horn sounding to Euron falling overboard and the horn falling silent—had taken less than two minutes.
"Ah…" Jorah and the old knight with the white beard wobbled to their feet, seemingly about to recover.
But then, to Dany's horror, she saw a bald pirate with a bird tattoo on his chest pick up the massive horn. He appeared ready to blow it again.
Almost instinctively, Dany bent down, grabbed a loaded crossbow from the deck, and took aim. The tiny crosshair aligned with the man's chest, and she pulled the trigger.
The entire process took no more than two blinks of an eye.
"Thwack!"
Perhaps the archery practice over the past few months paid off. The white man let out a cry of pain, dropping the horn from his hand. Though she aimed at his chest, the arrow struck the root of his thigh instead.
The dual-hand crossbow packed a punch, shooting across a distance of thirty to forty meters. The arrow pierced through the man's thigh, and the tattooed man lost his footing, toppling sideways to the ground.
"Blacky, destroy the plank!"
Seeing her "sniper skills" working, Dany's confidence soared. While commanding Blacky to burn the wooden plank connecting the two ships, she picked up a short bow and began shooting at the pirates who had boarded her ship.
"Ow!" A centaur grabbed his backside and turned around, casting a reproachful look at his Khaleesi.
"Ahaha, sorry! Step back for now; I'll be more careful next time," Dany chuckled awkwardly.
She fired a total of eight arrows, hitting five pirates, missing with two, and accidentally striking an ally with the last one.
Hmm, not bad efficiency, she thought.
Dany wasn't strong enough to kill with her bow and arrows—they only managed to wound the enemies. Accidentally hitting her own team wasn't a big deal either; with her side having more numbers, they just needed to quickly clear the pirates from the deck.
Once her allies recovered from the effects of the horn, the Serenity would be left leaderless, trapped between three ships, with no chance of escape.
"Boom!" The plank burned and snapped in two as Blacky screeched and flew toward the Serenity.
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!"
Arrows rained down from the opposing side, forcing Blacky to roll and fall into the sea.
Although uninjured, the startled dragon swam beneath the ship to the rudder. Suddenly, the ocean boiled like a pot of water, white steam and black smoke bubbling and rising on both sides of the hull.
"Princess, watch out! Your dragons—Emerald and White Jade!" Jorah called out in alarm, pointing behind Dany.
She turned around and saw that while the two creatures were no longer thrashing wildly, they still hadn't fully recovered from the horn's effects. Their eyes were blood-red, their gaze fixed on her back, mouths opening and closing in a struggle, as if they wanted to… kill their own mother?
Blacky's eyes were molten red, White Jade's were golden, and Emerald's were jade-green. But now, the latter two had both turned blood-red—a terrifying and unnatural sight.
"You ungrateful brats!" Dany shouted. She grabbed a silver whip from the ground and began lashing furiously.
"I'll beat the sense back into you! Have you forgotten your own mother?"
"Roar—hiss hiss!" The two dragons cried in pain, tucking their heads under their wings, both angry and aggrieved.
"Wake up already!" Dany didn't relent. Seeing their menacing expressions persist and their eyes unchanged, she swung the whip even harder, the sound of lashes echoing across the deck.
Finally, the inevitable happened. Pushed to their limit, the young dragons lunged at her. "Boom!"
Dragonfire washed over her face.
"Ahh!" Dany dropped the whip and fell hard on her backside, clutching her face and wailing in pain.
Jorah hurriedly fetched a bucket of seawater from the side of the ship. In the process, he noticed a figure floating in the water. Running to Dany, he doused her with the water while shouting to Whitebeard, "It's Euron! He's not dead! He's still trying to control the dragons!"
Whitebeard rushed to the edge of the ship. Sure enough, he saw Euron, scorched and bloody, floating near the side. Though badly burned, he was alive, his mouth moving as if chanting.
With precise and swift movements, the old man used his cane like a spear, hurling it down at Euron.
"Thud!" It struck Euron squarely on the head. His eyes rolled back as he fainted, sinking into the sea.
"Princess, are you alright?" After dealing with Euron, Whitebeard ran back to Dany, only to find Jorah had abandoned her after dousing her with water. Instead, he had picked up a sword and charged at the pirates.
Dany sat on the deck, her leather vest and long-sleeve shirt scorched and tattered. From her neck upward, she was blackened, wet, and burned. Her forehead was smeared with soot, and a shiny red blister stood out on her cheek.
Whitebeard crouched down, examining her with growing alarm—not because of the burns on her face but because she had survived dragonfire with only minor injuries.
"You really are the Unburnt? Even dragonfire can't kill you?" he asked in amazement.
During her stay at Qarth, Dany hadn't showcased her resistance to fire, so Whitebeard had only heard of her nickname, "the Unburnt." He'd assumed it was an exaggeration, but witnessing it firsthand left him stunned.
"Euron isn't dead?" Dany asked instead.
Perhaps because of its magical nature, dragonfire was hotter than ordinary flames. Regular fire couldn't harm her, but dragonfire could still scorch her skin. Prolonged exposure might even kill her.
The Unburnt had her limits. When her dragons grew bigger and their fire hotter, she would likely be incinerated instantly.
"I knocked him unconscious. He might drown," the old man replied. He helped her up and draped his cloak over her shoulders.
Dany glanced at the still-enraged Emerald and White Jade, their eyes glowing red as they screeched. "Let's deal with the pirates first."
The Serenity had over 200 pirates. All had their tongues cut out, but only 40 had their ears plugged with molten gold. The rest, over a hundred, were still reeling from the horn's effects.
