( Elia Martell POV )

"He's-"

"Callum Lannister." Callum cut her off, giving the old man a smile. "It's good to meet you, are you a friend of Princess Elia's?"

...

Lonno snorted in amusement. "Lannister you say?" he glanced up at Elia, then back down at the boy. "Yes, I suppose I am. She used to come through here quite often when she was small. I believe I gave her a doll on her eighth namesday."

Callum smiled brightly at that, and Elia felt her cheeks flush slightly but shook her head. "I'm actually hunting for Oberyn today Lonno. He's not in the palace, or in the workshop outside the city."

"Prince Oberyn? Well, he's down in the Shadow City from time to time. Visits more often than you do Princess." the older man teased, and Elia felt a little bit of guilt at that. The responsibilities of a grown woman made it harder for her to visit old friends in the city. "That said, he's often headed for the pillow houses." his gaze flicked to Callum, then back to Elia, meeting her eyes. "Which you may want to avoid given your current company."

Elia grimaced. Of course, he would be there, why didn't she think of that first? But that was probably going to be the first place that Lord Yronwood looked as well. It wouldn't take the lord much asking around to find his way to the various brothels in the Shadow City, they weren't exactly discrete establishments. She sighed, placing a silver stag on the counter. "Thank you Lonno. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that." she glanced over at Callum. "Do you think you could make it back to the workshop on your own? Or the palace?"

"Eventually? Probably." the boy agreed, "Though I'm not certain I'd want to get lost in the alleys here." Callum said, glancing around.

"Right." Elia sighed. He was right. Callum was a girly-looking noble child in rich clothing and his last name wasn't Martell. He'd get maybe two streets over before he was robbed. "Right, I'll get you back to one of the threefold gates, it's a straight route to the palace or the outer wall from there."

"That will work." the boy smiled, and Elia "Thank you, Elia."

"I could hardly do anything less," she said, patting his head gently. It was easy to forget how young and vulnerable the boy was, given the level of authority he commanded with his workshop, and how well he got on with Oberyn and Doran. "Come on, it's a bit of walking." they had entered the city through one of the minor gates, so they were quite far from the main thoroughfare.

Back into the maze of winding passages and alleys, they went, passing through small tunnels here and there and past lines hung with the laundry to dry. It was a crowded and tight path they followed, and Elia kept having to look back over her shoulder to make sure that the blond boy was still close behind her.

She was quite sure that he wouldn't be bothered as long as she was nearby. On and on they went, until they reached the edge of the upper city, clambering up stairs to a small door in the second winding wall, they paused to rest on a landing in the shadow of the great stone battlement, looking out over the shadow city they'd just passed through, sloping down to the outer curtain wall.

"Feels a lot farther than it looks…" Callum said, sitting down on the railing and glancing down over the city below. It really wasn't that far between the winding walls, only a few hundred yards, but it felt as if they had walked for miles through the endless mud-brick buildings. "It's certainly an experience," he said, a small smile on his lips.

"There's nowhere else like it that I've seen in my life." Elia nodded, "Though parts of Oldtown come close I think, they're still not quite as tightly packed between the walls."

"Well, it's certainly interesting, a bit like the tunnels in the Rock." the boy gave her a smile, though he didn't say anything more as the sound of a lone trumpet rose up from the city below.

Elia watched as the boy calmed at the sound of it, the trumpeter beginning to play a few long tones, the sharp sounds rising over the din of the shadow city to reach their ears. When Callum spoke again there was melancholy in his voice.

"Do you like music, Princess Elia?"

"Hmm?" Elia tilted her head. "I suppose I do, I like a good troubadour at a feast or a singer with a clear voice." she glanced towards the blond boy, who still gazed out over the city towards wherever that trumpet was playing. "What about you?"

"I love music, I miss it dearly," Callum said quietly. "Even the trumpets aren't…" the boy paused, then glanced up at her, his big green eyes seemed to meet Elia's with an intensity she hadn't expected before he shook his head, the melancholy fading as a smile returned to his red lips. "Never mind that though, perhaps I shall make some music for you someday, Elia." he paused for a moment, putting a finger to his chin. "Actually, how do you feel about dancing?"

"Dancing?" Elia asked, honestly a bit surprised. "I can't say that I've done much of it." the only common 'structured' dance in Dorne was silk dancing, which was considered a bit too uncouth for a woman of House Martell. She knew there were dances less… lasvicious in nature in other parts of Westeros though, so she didn't take it as an insult. "Not that I'm opposed to it, provided it's respectable."

Callum nodded, stroking his chin a little, before popping off of the balcony. "Music and dancing, I hadn't thought about that…" he said, twirling his long hair between his fingers. "I'll give it more thought later." he smiled, "Come on Elia," Callum said, smiling. "Back to walking eh?"

"Right." Elia smiled, pushing along ahead of him into the still-winding paths of the middle city. She had to be even a bit more attentive to keep from losing Callum in the alleys, as he was now distracted with his thoughts, but in truth, they didn't have to go much further. Not because they reached the threefold gates, no.

No, that would have been preferable, as while they made their way down one of the wider alleyways, Oberyn staggered out of a brothel ten feet ahead of them almost entirely naked and smelling of alcohol and perfume, his arm around a pretty salty-dornish woman who was equally undressed and kissing his neck. So deep in their cups, and their mutual affections, that they hardly noticed Elia, who stood there shocked for a moment as her brother promptly pressed the woman against the wall and kissed her deeply.

In broad daylight no less.

Elia clamped her hand over Callum's eyes as she dragged him down an alley to the side, wishing she could take a grindstone to her mind and polish away memories.

It was a long and embarrassing walk back to the Old Palace after that. Especially when the same woman came to dinner at Lord Yronwoods side.

Embarrassing indeed.

Prince Rhaegar Targaryen's fleet departs the city of Lys unsuccessfully, as while several women of Valyrian descent attempted to court the Prince, none were satisfactory to him. The Prince is heard to remark that Lyseni women are beautiful but their heads are full of air and sugar. They begin the voyage around the boiling sea to the city of Volantis, where the Prince will seek a wife from amongst the old-blood of Valyria inside the city's black walls.
