Game Of Thrones : Merchant of Two Worlds

Chapter 69: 69. Recruiting Jon

After talking about himself, Jason Liu looked at Jon and said, "Jon, sometimes the solution to a problem is simple—just leave and get away from it.

You need to break free from what makes you anxious. Change your environment, and start a new life for yourself!

Once you do that, you'll realize those past problems won't hold you back anymore. You'll have your own life, your own family, your own wife and children!

See? Sometimes it's really that easy to solve a problem."

Jason stopped talking then, giving Jon time to think.

Just like in the original story, Jon was angry and frustrated with his life in Winterfell. He was so upset that he was willing to sacrifice everything—his honor, his family, even the chance to have a wife and children—just to join the Night's Watch and escape Winterfell.

Without intervention, Jon would likely follow this same miserable path.

But since Jason wanted to recruit Jon, he wasn't going to let him take the black.

In the original story, Jon regretted his decision after seeing the harsh reality of the Night's Watch. But by then, it was too late to turn back.

Now, Jon had another option.

"Leave… Winterfell?" Jon understood what Jason was saying. He had thought about leaving before but never knew where he'd go.

He had spent his whole life in Winterfell, over ten years, and barely left the area. His knowledge of the outside world came from the stories he heard.

At 15, Jon wondered if he could survive on his own. The gossip and disdain in Winterfell were unbearable, but leaving the familiar safety of the city terrified him.

It's natural for people to want to stay in a place they know. Jon was afraid of the unknown world beyond Winterfell, and that fear held him back from leaving.

His face showed his hesitation. He wanted to leave Winterfell, but where would he go?

Jason noticed Jon's confusion and spoke directly. "Jon, you are hardworking, strong, honest, and kind. After getting to know you, I'm sure of this."

Jon blushed slightly, feeling embarrassed by the unexpected praise. He never thought someone like Jason would see him in this way. He had always been treated as a lowly basterd, but Jason spoke to him with respect.

Grateful for Jason's kind words, Jon looked down, not knowing how to respond.

Jason smiled and continued, "So, if you're willing, I'd like to formally hire you to be the head of my household and help train my soldiers."

Jon's eyes widened in shock. Was he hearing this right? Jason wanted him to be head of the household, like Ser Rodrik in Winterfell? That was a trusted position, and Jon could hardly believe Jason would offer it to him.

He felt both excited and unworthy. How could a basterd take on such a responsibility?

Grateful but unsure of himself, Jon shook his head quickly. "No, Jason, I… I can't do that. You should find someone more experienced, like Ser Rodrik. I'm just an illegitimate child, I…"

Jason gently patted Jon on the shoulder and said, "Jon, listen. I've thought this through carefully. I believe in you, and I hope this can help you get out of your current situation. Don't be so quick to say no. Take some time to think about it, okay?"

Jon wanted to refuse again, but Jason's sincere eyes stopped him.

Since childhood, only his mother (if she was still alive) and his sister Arya had treated him well. Now, Jason was the only other person who genuinely cared for him.

Even though Lord Eddard had raised him in Winterfell, he left Jon in the care of servants and never showed much affection. Jason, a man Jon had only just met, had already shown him more kindness than his own father.

The idea that Jason was deceiving him didn't make sense. What could a lowly basterd like Jon offer?

Jon, who had always been sensitive to how people treated him, knew Jason's respect was sincere.

He was deeply moved by Jason's offer but knew he had to ask Lord Eddard for permission.

Thinking of his father filled Jon with resentment. Eddard Stark didn't seem to notice his struggles, let alone care about the pain he felt.

Jon's heart was full of anger and sadness. He felt like he should never have been born, never brought shame to his mother by existing.

Feeling overwhelmed and not wanting to leave a bad impression on Jason, Jon turned pale and said goodbye.

As Jon walked back toward Winterfell, Jason shrugged. He had done his part. The choice was now up to Jon—and perhaps Lord Eddard Stark.

What would Eddard think of his plan to recruit Jon? Would he agree, or would he send Jon to the Night's Watch like in the original story?

Unable to predict, Jason shook his head and went back to his work.
