Chapter 271: 271. Don’t Worry About Borrowing Money
Taking off his shirt and throwing it on the bed, Jason Liu picked up his underwear and shorts, ready to take a shower.
In October, the temperature in the northern region wasn't as high as in previous months. At least it was still cool enough to wear short sleeves at night.
After adjusting the warm water from the solar heater and enjoying a comfortable bath, Jason Liu changed into a short-sleeved shirt and black sports shorts.
Holding his clothes in his hands, he returned to his room and placed the shirts he had just taken off in a pile. After returning to Zheng City, he planned to ask the cleaning lady to take them to the dry cleaners.
"Can't I wash them for you? Do you really have to take them to someone else and waste money?" Having washed her son's clothes for over 20 years, Liu's mother didn't expect to be replaced. She was both annoyed and amused. Her son really had money to burn.
Jason Liu couldn't help laughing. "Mom, all my clothes need to be professionally dry-cleaned. If I wash them myself, I won't be able to wear them again. These clothes look nice but are a hassle to clean."
Hearing that the clothes would be ruined if washed at home, Liu's mother didn't insist anymore. She knew that the clothes her son wore now weren't cheap, and she had better not ruin them.
"Come on, Lila, Grandma's going to bathe you. Put on your pajamas—you're going to bed!" Liu Ma took her granddaughter to the bathroom.
Lila, who had been sitting on Jason Liu's bed playing with his phone, put it down and was dragged off by her grandmother for a bath.
Jason Liu picked up his phone and glanced at it. He wasn't sure when the little girl had unlocked it. She must have seen him do it earlier and memorized the pattern.
He casually deleted the random photos she had taken in the album.
While deleating the photos in his phone, Dad Liu walked in with a teacup in his hand.
Jason Liu noticed the familiar plastic cup. He hadn't taken it back during college, and Dad Liu had been using it for over two years now.
"Dad, what's up?" Jason Liu looked at his father, who seemed hesitant to speak. As long as it didn't involve his core principles, Jason could still talk calmly with his father.
Dad Liu's dark face looked slightly embarrassed. After being the strong one in the family his whole life, it felt awkward and shameless to ask his son for something.
"How many days are you staying home this time?" Unable to get straight to the point, Dad Liu avoided looking at his son and stared instead at the poster on the wall.
Jason Liu put down his phone and looked at his dad with a puzzled expression. "I probably won't stay home long this time—still have company matters to handle. What's up, Dad? You're being weird and fidgety. It's making me uncomfortable too..."
Hearing the teasing tone in his son's voice, Dad Liu instinctively wanted to glare at him. How dare he use "fidgety" to describe a grown man? That term was for old ladies!
Still, thinking of how successful his son had become—far more capable than a father who had only ever farmed—Dad Liu felt a little old. The Liu family's future would soon be in his son's hands.
That thought left him slightly dejected.
With mixed feelings, Dad Liu coughed, rubbed his nose, and tried to figure out how to tell his son that his aunt and uncle wanted to borrow money.
Just then, Mama Liu walked in with Lila, who had put on her cute bear pajamas after her bath. Seeing Dad Liu still there, she frowned.
"Didn't you say you were sleepy and wanted to go to bed? Why are you in Jason's room?"
"Uncle, hug!" Lila stretched her arms out for Jason Liu to hold her.
Jason picked the little girl up and pressed his head to her belly, making her giggle.
"My dad seems like he wants to say something," he said, turning to Liu's mother with a smile. "He's been standing here for ages without saying a word."
"What are you talking about?" Dad Liu snapped, glancing at Liu's mother awkwardly.
After staring at him for a moment, Mama Liu quickly caught on.
Her temper flared instantly, and her voice rose. "Victor, it's almost eleven o'clock! If you've got nothing important, go back to your room and sleep! Our son just got back from Zheng City after a long, tiring day—don't disturb his rest. Go on, go sleep!"
Lila hugged Jason's neck tightly, and the two looked at each other, eyes wide, watching Mama Liu scold Papa Liu.
Embarrassed in front of his son and granddaughter, Dad Liu's dark face flushed. He grunted and shuffled back to his room.
Jason Liu chuckled and looked at his mother. "Mom, come on, let Dad say whatever he wants."
"What else could it be?" Mama Liu huffed. "Didn't you transfer 600,000 yuan to us before? I told him not to tell anyone, but your dad doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut! Now your aunt and uncle found out, and they want to borrow money. I won't agree to it!"
She grew angrier as she spoke. "Why? When have we ever borrowed money from them? Even back when your college tuition was tight, and we were desperate, they didn't help us! I had to beg the Xu family for just 10,000 yuan. Do you know how humiliating that was? Our family had to swallow our pride, and I had to humble myself before those two who always looked down on us!"
Thinking back to those painful times, Liu's mother's voice trembled and her eyes turned red.
"Mom, it's okay—it's all in the past now. Your son can earn money now. A lot of it." Jason Liu wrapped an arm around her shoulders, smiling warmly. "I'll transfer five million to your bank card later. From now on, you'll never have to worry about money again. Okay?"
