Chapter 28: The Vale Campaign(3)
The two forces stood before each other, if one were to look close they would see soliders from both sides trembling, this was beyond their singular self, if they lost, they likely died, and if they won they also might die, no matter the results, thousands would die, probably tens of thousands, and if we're unlucky 100.000. The total forces from both side was 130.000 men.
The multiple different armor types, colours and engravings showed the different Houses and units from both the Vale and the Riverlands. The River Troops had more experience and the Vale troops had more advanced weapons and armor.
Neither wanted to engage, the Vale troops were not fully awake and were already tired and hungry due to the actions of the nights. On the other side the Riverlanders had the patience to wait.
In the Riverlands command camp a precarious situation was happening.
"Lord Alexander! Why are we not attacking!?" Emmon screamed.
"Quiet down, Frey." Karyl Vance said with an angry voice.
"What, Vance?" Emmon said turning his head quickly.
"Calm down gentlemen." Alexander said.
"To answer your question, Emmon. The Vale men won't regain their stamina by standing in the sun all day." I said, shooting his complaints down.
"But our men are getting exhausted! And the Mountain Clans want to fight! They are getting increasingly hard to deal with!" He said raising his voice again.
"Lower your voice, Frey! Know your place, you do not have the required influence and position to scream at Lord Alexander!" Jason said, everyone looked at Emmon with angry eyes.
And with that he pulled back and went silent.
"Lords, we will win the battle of resilience, they do not have food and will be required to attack us soon enough. Additionally order our back lines to rest, they are allowed to sit down at their positions." I said.
Immediately after the order was given a guard rushed out of the tent to inform the formation commanders.
"Let us relax a bit, this battle will take multiple days. It is a fight including 130.000 men, even if we launch our entire cavalry at their back without any resistance they won't give up, we have to slowly wind down their forces. We are currently at a numerical disadvantage, but we have stronger infantry experience, whether it is the Mountain Clansmen, my infantry, Vance's, Frey or Mallisters, all the Riverlanders have forces having attended multiple war's, we will not fall at this critical time, all movements must be carefully planned, especially at the start. One wrong move and we would be crippled." I said with a serious voice, I looked each of them into the eye, Emmon Frey, Jason Mallister, Karyl Vance and the ever silent Tytos.
"Yes, My Lord!" Each of them said in unison, showing their determination to prove to the world, that the Riverlands hadn't fallen yet.
That's when a messenger broke through the camp.
"My Lords! The Vale Army had begun moving." He said with a hint of distress in his voice.
"Alright, move out to your respective flanks and units. I will station myself on top of the castle walls for a good lookout position." I said as all 4 of them nodded before running out.
Immediately after I stood up and began walking towards the walls.
I had 10 lesser skilled men in my elite force guarding me. This was because I needed all my best ones in the fight for their command centre. However these 10 were selected for their extreme loyalty and devotion to me and me only.
It only took me 1 minute to reach the top of walls.
Once I reached the walls I got a full view of the current situation.
The Vale Army was slowly walking forward. They knew they couldn't take us by surprise due to our formation and therefore walked even slower than a normal walk, to make sure they don't waste even 1% of their stamina to get there.
They were approximately 2 minutes away at that speed. My generals had gotten to their respective fronts. Tytos in the main front, Emmon in the Vanguard. Karyl on the right and Jason in the left.
And soon enough, the fighting began.
This wouldn't be like any other war, this was a true war. This war wouldn't be determined by one day, or two, or three, or four. Battles such as these could last weeks. The Game Of Thrones show attempted to make these battles so much smaller than they actually are. The Battle of the Trident didn't last one day, and one battle.
No, the history books from this world showed that the Battle of the Trident truly should be 'War of the Trident' the war lasted 4 days. The first 3 days was about winding the enemy forces down and the last day was when Robert slayed The Targaryen Prince.
The Siege of King's Landing was truly only one day, however that was due to the reinforcements and Stannis realised he couldn't continue the fighting.
And like that the first line of both armies clashed. The Vale Mountain Clansmen against the Vale. The Mountain Clansmen were extremely powerful in close range, their vitality and speed truly outperformed to slow and armored Vale Men at Arms.
The Knights of the Vale usually won because the clansmen couldn't penetrate their armor. But after getting a quick session by Jon on how to kill knights in armor and Castle-made steel weapons. They finally got their ability to fight back and revenge. The Knights of the Vale in the Vanguard was suffering extreme casulities against the bloodthirsty and aggressive clansmen.
This was the first boost to our armies, and we would exploit it.
I turned to one of the guards beside me.
"Ride through our formations and scream of the Vale casualties." I said.
"Understood, My Lord." He said as he got into a horse and began riding for the battlefield.
I then turned to the man in charge of the Archer's.
"Is the Vanguard within range of our bows?" I asked
"Yes, sir. However there is a chance they would hit our Vanguard, as such I haven't ordered fire yet." The lead archer said.
"Hmm. Open fire. I hope you do not inflict too many casualties on the Mountain Clansmen." I said.
The Lead Archer simply smiled before moving onto the order.
Truly, the people of this world and age care little of Barbarians. I suspect that he always wanted to fire but didn't want to risk it. But honestly, the more Mountain Clansmen to die, the easier ruling the Vale will be for me. They would be a problem for me later and therefore I don't plan on treating them like normal soliders.
"Fire at will!" The lead archer shouted.
And with that the 2000 archers released their volley. It is a dumb movie strategy to show the archers reading in unison and in volleys, they simply shot their arrows once they could, it was too physically difficult to hold their arrow back for such a long time.
The Mountain Clansmen were fighting relentlessly, even after being stabbed they continued to fight. They were truly terrifying opponents, no wonder the Knights of the Vale never truly cleared them out.
5 minutes after the Vanguards clashed the right and left did too.
The thing with our formation is that it uses the independent strategic mind of our generals. Karyl Vance and Jason Mallister are war tested Generals, Tytos had led multiple of my armies and Emmon Frey has participated in multiple battles.
The generals each had control of their respective parts, giving each individual complete control of their army. This is a risky play but also beneficial and I and am still commanding the overall battle,
