Chapter 109: ch-106
On top of the Los Santos River Bridge, a series of purple lights flickered continuously under the cold moonlight. Infected bodies roamed the area, clutching their necks and roaring with a twisted ferocity. The dark, glossy masks covering their faces reflected the surrounding flames, creating an eerie, monstrous aura, as though they had emerged from the depths of asphalt.
As time passed, these infected amassed into a writhing black tide. The purple light at the center of this chaos stood like a solitary lighthouse, seemingly on the brink of being consumed.
"Damn it!" a weary police officer cursed as he repeatedly pulled the trigger of his rifle. When the flash from the muzzle ceased, a hollow click echoed instead of a shot.
Frustrated, he tossed the empty gun aside and retreated a few steps, looking despondently at the infected swarming beyond the safety of the purple light.
"Boss, we're out of bullets…"
The old officer, known as rick, remained calm, taking a slow drag from his cigarette as he gazed at the scene outside.
"You should've left with the other players," rick said in a low voice. "You're a player too. You could've accessed the resources of the platform instead of staying here to die."
The younger officer shook his head resolutely. "No, I can't abandon you. I can't abandon them," he replied, glancing at the frightened residents huddled together in the protective circle of purple light.
"Don't worry," he added. "The purple light keeps these things out. Once military support arrives, we'll be rescued."
rick exhaled a cloud of smoke, his eyes fixed on the infected beyond the barrier. His voice carried a grim tone. "It's been barely three hours since the game started, and the entire North District has fallen. Tell me, how long do you think this city can hold out?"
The younger officer fell silent. He reluctantly pulled out a cigarette and began smoking, the weight of the situation settling in.
Suddenly, a commotion rippled through the black tide. The infected were forcefully pushed aside, like leaves in the wake of an oncoming storm.
"What's happening?" one of the officers muttered, standing up cautiously.
From within the dark, shifting mass of infected, a path opened. A massive, dark-red figure emerged—a towering, alien creature. Its siliconized shell gleamed with a thick, crimson hue, and its powerful body exuded a terrifying presence. It looked like an evolved form of the typical vampires described in the mission, but its dark red appearance marked it as something far worse.
The alien moved toward the edge of the purple light, its forehead inching closer to the ultraviolet glow. The officers held their breath, their hearts pounding as the creature tested the barrier.
The light shone on its head, but to their horror, the alien remained unaffected.
"It's… it's not burning!" someone shouted in terror.
"This is impossible! It should've been destroyed!"
"Roar!!!" The alien snarled, leaping into the group like a predator among sheep.
Panic erupted as officers and civilians alike scrambled to escape. One officer slashed at the alien with a silver knife, only to watch in despair as the wound healed instantly under the purple light.
The alien turned and struck, sinking its teeth into him.
"Help!!!"
"Run! Get out of here!!!"
Chaos consumed the once-safe zone. The screams of the helpless echoed across the bridge as the alien tore through the crowd, while the black tide of infected pressed in from all sides.
"Bang!" The purple light suddenly flickered and went out. Darkness swallowed the bridge entirely.
High above the city, Merlin sat cross-legged on a tower, observing the chaos below. His chin rested on his hand as he tilted his head, watching the star-like purple lights dotting the city.
In the North District of Los Santos, each purple glow represented a temporary safe zone. These lights twinkled faintly, forming a star map amidst the dense smoke of battle. But one by one, the lights flickered out, extinguished like dying embers.
As the last light faded, the black tide began to spread, engulfing the city in darkness.
"Maybe next time, I'll pick a smaller country," Merlin muttered to himself with a tinge of regret. "This playground is too cramped."
Standing up, he turned his gaze eastward. A faint smirk played on his lips as he envisioned the location of his next game.
Just as the tide of despair seemed unstoppable, a brilliant light appeared in the night sky. Fireworks-like explosions illuminated Los Santos, followed by countless streaks of light descending from above.
[Liberty City players have arrived in Los Santos.]
The announcement reverberated through the city, igniting a glimmer of hope.
"Boom!" An incandescent flare erupted over Los Santos, momentarily lighting up the chaotic streets and revealing the infected swarming below.
"The Liberty City players are here!" Horn shouted, his eyes fixed on the meteors streaking across the sky.
Elsewhere, Dom and Brian stood on a rooftop, gazing at the spectacle above. Letty, now cured of the vampire virus, joined them in awe.
On the streets, convoys of vehicles from Liberty City rolled in, including heavily armed Tyrants and Transformers. The air was filled with cheers as players poured into the city, their vehicles roaring through the night.
"Wooo! Time to show the rookies in Los Santos how it's done!"
"Ahahaha! Let's go!"
"Deploy the umbrellas! Open fire!"
The tide of despair began to turn as the reinforcements from Liberty City descended, bringing chaos and hope in equal measure to the embattled streets of Los Santos.
