Chapter 271: A New Horde

Outer Perimeter – Eastern Breach Zone
The morning haze clung to the collapsed barricades along the far edge of the eastern perimeter. Black smoke curled up from the ruins, mixing with the sallow dawn light.
Elaine stepped lightly over shattered bulwarks, her rapier glinting with frost where she'd coated it in protective ether. Each footprint she left was soon swallowed by drifting clouds of ash and the slow, patient crawl of fresh Wretches.
These were not the twisted prototypes they'd faced in the labs. No—these were larger, clad in black, chitinous exoskeletons, limbs longer than human arms. Dozens were emerging from hidden tunnels in the hillsides, their carapaces wet with fresh growth.
"Their numbers…" Diane's voice crackled through the comm bead. "They're multiplying faster than forecast."
"They're evolving," Cyg replied flatly from the southern ridge. "Whoever seeded them prepared contingencies."
Elaine shifted her weight, angling her blade over her shoulder. "Then we clear them before they spread."
Harriet landed beside her in a gust of heat, Vermithar flaring wide in brilliant wings. "Time to show these monsters what a real fight feels like."
From the comm line, Thea's calm voice threaded through the tension. "Hold the line until we finish evacuations. You are Gaia's shield now."
"Copy."
Elaine took one steadying breath—and charged.

Northern Command – Mobile Tactical Unit
Inside a reinforced command vehicle, Charlotte, Mia, and Sophia clustered around a flickering holographic table. Red sigils pulsed across the map as new breaches were marked every few seconds.
"Three hundred and counting," Sophia murmured, tapping her console. "We're tracking at least five distinct hives."
Charlotte's jaw clenched. "And the main colony…?"
"Still underground. No visual."
Mia looked up from her Grimoire, her voice soft but firm. "Then we draw them out."
Charlotte met her eyes, surprised by the steel there.
"Mia—"
"Don't," Mia interrupted gently. "I know you're afraid for me. But if these creatures are using Creation Force as a catalyst, then I can sense their imprint."
Sophia's gaze sharpened. "You're suggesting a resonance trigger?"
Mia nodded, closing Lexigra against her heart. "I can amplify my creation aura. Make myself the bait."
Charlotte reached across the table, gripping her wrist. "If you do this…you'll be in the open."
"I know."
Their eyes locked—a silent plea and a silent promise.
Charlotte's hand trembled before she let go. "Then I'll cover you."

Southern Ridge – Forward Combat Zone
On the southern ridge, Cyg stood at the vanguard with Astron, Tryce, and Joseph. The slope below churned with fresh Wretches, their elongated limbs tearing through defensive palisades.
Astron drew Umbrix, shadows spilling between his fingers. "How many waves?"
"At least six," Cyg said. "More if the southern tunnels stay open."
Tryce pulled back Glacienn's bowstring, the air around him glittering with frost. "Then we make this slope their grave."
Joseph gripped Thalrion, the trident's tines humming with liquid ether. "We hold until they break."
Cyg lifted Aetheron, gaze flat and cold. "No mercy."
The Wretches charged.

Eastern Breach – Mid-Battle
Elaine's wind-blade snapped through three creatures in a single arc. The gust blew Harriet's flames wider, igniting a dozen more.
Harriet's laughter was ragged, triumphant. "That's right! Come on—come die with the rest!"
But even as she exulted, another wave erupted from the ground behind them.
Elaine turned, lifting her rapier—too late. A massive Wretch lunged at Harriet's unguarded back.
Then a streak of silver split the dawn.
Charlotte landed between them, Kyrosyn blazing with blue ether. In one fluid motion, she spun her chakram, cleaving the Wretch in half.
Harriet exhaled shakily. "You…you always show up."
Charlotte's lips curved in a small, fierce smile. "And you always need me to."
Together, they faced the swarm.

Northern Command – Mia's Gambit
Mia stood alone on a shattered observation platform. Wind tugged at her hair as she lifted Lexigra, eyes closing.
Within, she called upon everything—her training, her compassion, her conviction. The memory of Cyg's quiet faith. The warmth of Charlotte's hand.
A single phrase echoed in her mind: If I can create…then I can protect.
The Grimoire opened.
A wave of radiant creation force exploded outward, bathing the entire northern approach in golden light.
In the tunnels beneath, thousands of Wretches screamed in unison. They turned as one—drawn to the beacon Mia had become.

Central Ridge – Cyg's Perspective
Cyg felt the shift in ether even from half a kilometer away. His head snapped toward the north, heart seizing.
"Mia…"
Astron followed his gaze, comprehension dawning. "She's drawing them all."
"We get to her," Cyg ordered. "Now."
Tryce unleashed a barrage of glacial arrows, covering their retreat. "Go!"

Northern Command – Final Stand
Wretches flooded the observation deck in a churning tide. Mia stood unflinching, her aura brighter than sunrise.
The first wave struck—and shattered against a wall of flame.
Charlotte landed beside her, wings of blue ether fanning wide. "I said I'd cover you."
Elaine arrived next, wind howling in her wake. "And I'll hold the line."
One by one, the Integral Knights converged. Harriet. Diane. Tryce. Astron.
Cyg arrived last. He stepped in front of Mia, lifting Aetheron with grim finality.
She looked up at him, her voice trembling. "I knew you'd come."
For a moment, something unspoken passed between them. Something fragile, almost too bright to look at.
Then the Wretches struck—and Gaia's finest met them as one.
