Chapter 268: The Wretched Break Free

Sublevel Three – Main Containment Hall

The core doors sealed with a final, echoing clang. For a heartbeat, the world was quiet—only the sound of ragged breathing and the faint whimper of dying Wretches.

Then the ceiling split open.

A shockwave of corrupted ether erupted through the chamber, sending Charlotte's newly locked containment protocols into a screaming cascade of alarms.

Mia stumbled backward, shielding her face as a rain of splintered metal crashed down. A shape rose in the swirling darkness—vast, insectile, with tattered membranes stretching from its spine like broken wings.

Elaine felt her heartbeat stutter. "They…they had an Apex Wretch sealed here."

Thea's jaw clenched, the blade of Caliburnus lowering fractionally. "I thought they were purged after the Abyssal Siege."

"They were," Cyg said, voice brittle as he activated his Mystic Eye again. Aetheron glimmered with pale energy. "But this one survived."

And now it was awake.

Observation Gallery – Archives

Charlotte's console erupted in a tide of red indicators.

[WARNING: CONTAINMENT FAILURE – ALL LEVELS][Apex Wretch Signatures Detected – Estimated Class: Rank 0]

Her breath locked in her chest. She tapped her comm, voice shaking. "Thea, it's replicating. The main organism is spawning new Wretches. If it gets out, the breach will consume half the sector."

Hikari gripped her arm gently, her scythe propped against her shoulder. "Then we must make sure it doesn't."

Charlotte swallowed and nodded. She remembered the nights in the Workshop, the long hours building countermeasures she prayed they'd never need.

"Mia," she called, "the Protocol Sigma runes—activate them now!"

Mia looked up, startled. "But if I do—"

"It will cost us the Archives," Charlotte said, voice firm, "but it will stop the replication."

Mia's fingers tightened around Lexigra. For a moment, she looked very young. Then she nodded, lips pressed into a thin line.

"I understand."

Sublevel Three

The Apex Wretch turned toward the Knights, its limbs twitching with parasitic hunger. A distorted hum vibrated the walls.

Cyg stepped forward, standing almost at the creature's feet. For an instant, Elaine thought he would say something—some cold declaration of strategy.

But he only lifted Aetheron and fired.

The round struck the Apex Wretch between its fractured mandibles. For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the Wretch shrieked—and the echo seemed to pierce the marrow of every living being in the hall.

Wretches poured out of its thorax in a living torrent. The walls buckled beneath the onslaught.

Diane swept her greatsword across the tide, gravity lashing out to crush limbs and skulls. Julius and Harriet pressed flank to flank, lightning and flame roaring together.

"Hold the line!" Thea shouted, her voice steel. "We have no choice—we end it here!"

Mia stood in the rune circle Charlotte had helped her inscribe months before. She could still remember the night: Charlotte explaining the symbols in a hushed voice, Cyg standing nearby in quiet approval, even Hikari watching with wide eyes.

She thought of those hours—their faith in her, the warmth of feeling useful.

And she thought of Cyg now, down there in the dark, trusting her again.

Her fingers trembled as she traced the final sigil.

[SIGMA PROTOCOL ARMED]

Mia looked over her shoulder, voice small but resolute. "Tell them…they have one minute."

Charlotte's eyes softened. "I will."

Sublevel Three

"Cyg!" Charlotte's voice crackled over the comm. "Mia is initiating the Sigma Protocol. You have sixty seconds to clear the blast radius."

Cyg turned, meeting Thea's gaze. She nodded once, grim understanding passing between them.

"Fall back," Thea commanded. "Everyone—move!"

Elaine swept her rapier in a spiral, wind shoving the nearest Wretches aside. Julius grabbed Harriet's arm, dragging her toward the corridor. Diane covered their retreat with gravity pulses that crumpled monsters to paste.

Cyg lingered at the rear, his Mystic Eye locked on the Apex Wretch. For a fleeting instant, the creature's gaze met his. In that perfect clarity, he saw it: not malice, but a hunger so vast it had become a kind of purpose.

Then he turned away and ran.

Observation Gallery

Mia's breath came in shallow gasps as the sigils ignited around her. The entire floor vibrated.

Charlotte touched her shoulder. "You did well," she said softly.

Mia didn't look up—her eyes stayed fixed on the swirling runes. "Please," she whispered, though she wasn't sure who she was pleading with. "Please let them be safe."

The glow became blinding.

Sublevel Three – Exit Tunnel

The Knights burst into the main shaft just as the floor behind them erupted in a hurricane of light. Ether and flame exploded upward, tearing the ceiling apart in a volcanic roar.

Even the Apex Wretch's scream was obliterated in the detonation.

When the light faded, half the sublevel was simply gone.

Aftermath – Upper Atrium

Smoke curled through the corridor as the Knights regrouped. Elaine's hands shook as she checked Cyg for injuries, her wind-tousled hair hiding the worry in her eyes.

"You didn't have to stay at the rear," she said quietly.

He looked at her, expression as unreadable as ever. But he lifted one hand, and for a heartbeat, she felt the weight of his gratitude in that small, deliberate gesture.

A little farther off, Harriet set her palms on her knees, breathing hard. "If I never see another Wretch again," she panted, "it'll be too soon."

Julius leaned against the wall, lightning still crackling around his fingers. "That makes two of us."

Thea turned to the others, her voice clear. "We'll need to confirm the Apex is destroyed, but the replication has been stopped. Mia…" She paused, searching for words. "Mia saved us all."

Silence fell.

Then, as if pulled by the same instinct, every Knight turned to watch Mia step into the atrium, Charlotte and Hikari supporting her. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were bright.

For a moment—just a moment—the darkness receded.
