Chapter 262: The Oath Rekindled

Citadel – Western Courtyard, Dawn
Rain still drummed on the paving stones when the Octagon assembled. Eight figures—so different in temperament, so alike in their fatigue—stood in a loose circle beneath the banner of Gaia.
Thea's gaze swept over each of them, her eyes steady though her heart trembled.
"When the King founded this circle," she began, her voice low and resonant, "he did not choose the eight strongest. He chose the eight who would be strongest together."
Julius crossed his arms. "Well, that went to shit."
A faint smile tugged at Thea's mouth. "Yes. It has."
Astron inclined his head in acknowledgment. "But you're calling us here for a reason."
"Yes." She turned, gesturing to the battered standard that hung behind her. Its white field was stained with months of grime and blood. "We have allowed the weight of war—and our own failings—to splinter what made us whole. Today, that ends."
Elaine shifted uneasily. "And how exactly do we end it?"
Thea let her palm rest over the heart of the banner. "We remember why we stood together in the first place."

Northern Ramparts – Midmorning
Sylvia watched the dawn break over the eastern plain, the first rays gilding the broken siegeworks. Her music had always come easily, but lately her voice refused to rise. It was as though something inside her had quieted beyond reach.
A step crunched behind her.
She turned to see Mia, hugging her grimoire close.
"I wanted to check on you," Mia said softly.
Sylvia looked back toward the horizon. "Have you ever felt…like your purpose was slipping away?"
Mia nodded. "Since the first day I took up Lexigra."
Sylvia closed her eyes, her lashes wet. "I was always so sure of who I was. But lately, all I can see is doubt."
Mia moved to her side, resting a hand over hers on the stone parapet. "Then let me remind you."
"Of what?"
"That you are the reason so many of us still have hope."
Sylvia's breath caught. Slowly, her fingers tightened around Mia's.

Training Yard – Noon
Charlotte circled the practice ring, her chakram whirling. Each movement was precise—too precise. Every strike snapped against the dummies with brittle perfection.
"Again," she muttered, voice hoarse.
Cyg watched from the gate. He said nothing.
When she finally paused, her shoulders heaving, she turned to find him there, hands folded behind his back.
"What?" she demanded, her voice raw.
He regarded her evenly. "You are trying to break yourself."
She bristled. "I'm trying to improve."
"Those are not the same."
Her throat tightened. "You wouldn't understand."
"No," he said, stepping closer, "I do."
For a moment, the world shrank to the space between them—her breath ragged, his steady.
At last, she looked down. "Then what do I do?"
"You stop fighting yourself."
His tone was unflinching—but behind it, something almost like gentleness stirred.

Citadel Infirmary – Early Afternoon
Hikari lay propped against the pillows, pale but awake. Her hands trembled faintly over the sheets.
Eun-Ha sat nearby, Solmaria resting across her lap.
"You shouldn't be out of bed," Eun-Ha murmured.
Hikari managed a weak smile. "And yet here I am."
For a moment, silence stretched between them.
Then Hikari whispered, "You always seem so composed. Even now."
Eun-Ha's gaze lowered. "It's an illusion."
"You mean…you're afraid too?"
Eun-Ha's jaw clenched. "More than I can say."
Hikari swallowed. "Then…if you can keep moving, maybe I can too."
Eun-Ha looked up, and something flickered in her eyes—warmth, fragile but real.
"Then we'll move together," she said.

Southern Bastion – Late Afternoon
Harriet stood on the bastion walls, firelight dancing along her gauntlet. She watched the flames gutter in the braziers below, the memory of so many battles etched across her mind.
A presence joined her, quiet but unmistakable.
Diane.
For a long while, neither spoke.
Then Harriet exhaled shakily. "I'm tired."
Diane nodded, her gaze fixed on the horizon. "So am I."
Harriet turned to her. "But you're still here."
Diane met her eyes, and for the first time in weeks, her stoicism cracked just enough to show the woman beneath.
"Yes," she said. "Because you are too."

Council Chamber – Dusk
They gathered again beneath the cracked sigil of Gaia. One by one, each knight stepped forward.
Elaine set her rapier across the table. "I am afraid," she said quietly. "But I will not turn away."
Charlotte laid her chakram beside it. "I am broken. But I will keep fighting."
Mia placed Lexigra, her voice trembling. "I am uncertain. But I will believe."
Hikari leaned on her scythe, breath shallow. "I am weak. But I will stand."
Harriet lifted Vermithar, eyes glinting with a defiant light. "I am angry. But I will stay."
Sylvia laid Orisha down, her expression fierce. "I am lost. But I will find my way."
Diane rested Thaneris in the circle. "I am tired. But I will not yield."
And finally, Thea laid Caliburnus atop them all.
"We are many things," she said, her voice carrying through the hall. "But above all—we are together."
For the first time in many months, a hush fell that was not born of fear, but of something quieter. Something stronger.

Observation Tower – Nightfall
Cyg stood alone, watching the rain ease to mist.
Behind him, footsteps.
Elaine approached, stopping just at his shoulder.
"Do you believe it?" she asked softly.
"That we can still win?"
"That we can still be…whole."
He didn't look at her. But his answer came without hesitation.
"Yes."
She closed her eyes, relief and grief mingling in her heart.
"Then," she whispered, "so do I."
