Chapter 170: Booths and Butterflies
The scent of honey-glazed meats, fresh garden herbs, and sizzling spice filled the air. The once-white stone of the courtyard now glimmered with decorations and Ether streamers, and each corner buzzed with activity. Every district of Gaia was given its own section of booths to represent culture, art, skill, and, of course, competition.
But none drew more attention than the Booths of the Integral Knights.
🛠️ Charlotte's Clockwork Stand
Painted bronze, with rotating gears and miniature clockwork animals on display, Charlotte's booth was already packed.
"Presenting the Auto-Frying Pancake Spider!" she beamed, placing a small mechanical arachnid on the skillet. It flipped the pancake with precision, steam hissing.
"E-Eh?! It even sings while cooking?" Elaine giggled, covering her mouth as the spider chirped a tune.
Cyg stood behind the crowd, arms crossed. He nodded once. "Efficient. Good mechanism control."
Charlotte flushed. "I-It's nothing. Just a silly gimmick…"
But her hand trembled slightly with pride.
Nearby, Sophia Synthesis 25 quietly took notes on the inner workings, muttering, "Clockwise kinetic input… 30 percent output efficiency. Fascinating."
🎨 Mia's Colorful Haven
Mia had converted her booth into a pastel oasis. Sketches floated mid-air thanks to Lexigra, her grimoire Artifact, each one glowing faintly with Ether lines.
"Want a magical sketch of your aura?" she offered brightly.
Joseph Synthesis 20 held up a rough image Mia had drawn of him wielding Thalrion. "You even got the water pulses. That's impressive."
Mia's cheeks turned pink. "T-Thank you, Sir Joseph!"
She glanced at Cyg who stood quietly by a banner pole, observing her without expression—but his gaze didn't leave her hands.
"Did he… like it?" she wondered, clutching her sketchpad closer.
🎵 Sylvia's Melody Stage
Sylvia's booth looked like a concert set: a floating Ether piano shimmered in midair, and her earrings—Orisha—amplified every note she played.
"Welcome," she said dramatically, striking the first note.
The entire square stilled.
Even Wang Han Synthesis 5, usually loud and hungry, paused mid-bite. "...That's some serious resonance," he muttered, impressed.
Sylvia's eyes found Cyg standing at the far edge of the crowd, arms crossed, head tilted slightly—listening. Not watching, just listening.
It sent a flutter through her chest.
"Why do I care if he listens?""Because… in my Arc… he saw me at my most vulnerable."
💐 Eun-Ha's Silent Booth
Unlike the others, Eun-Ha's booth was a simple garden—a spiritual Ether shrine where visitors could write messages of hope and place them on floating paper lilies.
She sat beneath a flowering tree, Solmaria (her cross staff) planted in the ground beside her like a quiet guardian.
Iris Synthesis 14 knelt respectfully beside her. "You've created peace within chaos."
Eun-Ha offered a small smile, nodding. "Peace always begins in silence."
She noticed Cyg pass by the booth.
He didn't speak. He simply looked down at the shrine, bowed his head briefly, and kept walking.
Her heart stirred gently.
"Even his silence respects mine."
💨 Elaine's Wind Garden
Elaine's booth was pure color and joy. Wind chimes sang in soft bursts, and floating seed-blossoms drifted through the air, guided by controlled gusts from her rapier Aetheris.
"Children, hold out your hands! I'll give you a dancing breeze!"
The kids squealed in delight as shimmering butterflies made of Ether spun around them.
Lucas Synthesis 22 smiled gently from a distance. "Elaine really is Gaia's joy."
She was radiant… but her smile flickered when she saw Cyg passing by.
She rushed from her booth. "H-Hey! Um, want a wind chime?"
Cyg looked at her, then at the small metallic flower she held. "What does it do?"
She blushed. "When you hang it… it sings when you're happy."
He took it. "…Alright."
Elaine skipped back, glowing.
🔥 Harriet's Roaring Grill
Meanwhile, Harriet's booth had become the place for meat-lovers. Flames roared behind her as she grilled skewers with precise movements.
"Who wants the Inferno Skewer Challenge?! Survive my ten-flame beef and win bragging rights!"
Raul Synthesis 27 stepped forward. "Move over. This sounds fun."
As the crowd roared with laughter, Harriet caught Cyg watching from a nearby tower, arms folded like always.
"…What? You judging me?" she called out.
He simply nodded. "You've improved your flame control. Less waste."
Harriet blinked. "Was… that a compliment?"
She grinned suddenly, cheeks turning red. "D-Don't just say stuff like that so casually!"
👥 The Other Knights Mingle
Ali Synthesis 13 helped with logistics, lifting tents with earth manipulation while giving advice to rookies.
Astron Synthesis 1 darted between shadows, playfully stealing snacks without detection.
Aria Synthesis 6 created a booth displaying elemental harmony—temperature shifting between ice and warmth for couples to test their balance.
Tryce Synthesis 16 calmly observed from a rooftop, sipping tea.
Julius Synthesis 2 attempted to challenge everyone to carnival strength tests and lost to Sophia.
Irene Synthesis 3 gave Ether readings for festival-goers, calming even the most anxious.
Thea Synthesis 0 walked through the booths in formal uniform, nodding with pride at her Knights' joy.
🌌 A Brief Gathering
That evening, beneath a tree adorned with starlit lanterns, Elaine, Harriet, Sylvia, Charlotte, Mia, Eun-Ha, and Hikari found themselves standing silently together… all glancing in one direction.
Toward Cyg.
They said nothing aloud, but each carried a memory from their arc.
A moment where he saw them—not as Knights, but as women with wounds and dreams.
The butterflies continued to dance in the air.
