Chapter 135: Flight Beyond Fear
Location: Gaia HQ – Central Command
The atmosphere in Gaia HQ pulsed with an unusual stillness. Ever since Elaine's Divine Assimilation awakened, the higher councils had been watching closely. Thea stood before the Octagram, her arms crossed, flanked by Irene and Diane.
"She's proven herself more than capable," Diane stated. "The Parasynth Choir should've overwhelmed them."
"But joy…" murmured Irene, voice soft, "joy is always the most fragile weapon. Even now, it's a blade that can either bloom or break."
Thea's silver gaze narrowed. "Then we make sure it blooms."
Location: Training Grounds – Aurora Plaza
Elaine stood at the edge of a high platform overlooking the clouds. Beside her was Cyg, arms folded, watching her closely.
"So," he said without looking at her, "you're flying now."
Elaine smiled softly, not responding at first. The wind tugged at her silver braid, and her rapier Aetheris hummed with subtle light.
"I always flew," she whispered. "I just never let myself believe I deserved to."
Cyg turned to her, his expression unreadable. He opened his mouth — but no words came. Instead, he reached into his coat and handed her a small gear-shaped pendant.
"Charlotte made this. Wind stabilizer core. You'll need it if you're going to the upper boundary."
Elaine blinked. "The rift breach?"
Cyg nodded. "It's shifting too fast. You'll be flying blind."
She tucked the core into her satchel, brushing his hand gently.
"Then I'll trust the wind to guide me… and maybe someone else, too."
For a moment, his expression flickered. But just for a moment.
Location: Skyreach Breach – Upper Stratos
Elaine soared higher than she ever had before. The cold stung her skin, and her armor glinted under starlight. Below her, the Gaia fleet hovered like ants in the clouds.
The rift above the world pulsed, open like a maw of eternal black. A Fracture Tank crawled from the abyss — biomechanical, half-formed, and teetering across the upper sky like a spider threading through night.
Elaine took a deep breath.
"Let's dance," she whispered.
Wind surged at her command. Aetheris split into seven prismatic trails, each one striking at the limbs of the beast, slicing joints, disorienting its balance.
But then—its tail lashed out, striking her midair.
She plummeted.
Flashback – Childhood Memory
Elaine, younger, sat under her family's ruined home after a windstorm. Crying, alone. No one to tell her it would be okay. No one to dry her tears. Not even wind could hold her then.
"Why do I even smile?"
Back in the present, as she fell, that same voice returned.
"Because even if no one's watching… joy is still yours."
Her eyes opened. The wind caught her.
Divine Assimilation — Sylphsong: Final Verse
Her wings unfurled again, larger, transcendent. Not feathers this time—but glowing music notes and storm symbols, flowing in loops.
She didn't fly.
She soared.
Elaine blitzed forward in a corkscrew. Aetheris shifted into Zephyr Requiem, slicing through the Fracture Tank's heart. She pulled the stabilizer from her pouch and jammed it into the exposed core.
"Let the song end."
A pulse.
The wind silenced.
The beast imploded, scattering crystalline wind across the sky like frozen stars.
Location: Gaia HQ – Garden Balcony (Night)
Later, she sat alone on the balcony, her legs swinging over the edge. Her braid was loose now, swept sideways by the breeze.
A soft voice broke the silence.
"Elaine."
Sylvia.
She approached slowly, hands behind her back. Elaine looked up, startled.
"Didn't think you'd come."
"I always follow the wind," Sylvia teased, sitting beside her. "Especially when it sings so beautifully."
Elaine chuckled, cheeks turning faintly pink. The sky was painted with stars, and their hands slowly brushed against each other's.
"I was afraid, you know," Elaine admitted quietly. "That if I lost my joy… I'd lose myself."
Sylvia leaned closer, her forehead resting gently against Elaine's.
"Then I'll help you keep it. One song at a time."
They sat in silence as the wind played its own gentle symphony.
