Chapter 116: The Hidden Light
Location: Gaia HQ – Recovery Sector, Midnight
The medical wing was still, dimly lit by glowing ether-lamps. The war against the Abyss had slowed—for now. Wounds were healing, both seen and unseen. But deep within the quiet corridors, one girl lay awake, her hands gripping her sheets as if anchoring herself to the world.
Hikari Synthesis 26 had not slept in days.
She sat up in her bed, moonlight slicing across her pale skin. Her long raven hair, once neatly brushed, now clung in wild strands around her delicate face. The faint scar on her shoulder—where her own scythe once grazed her—ached in the stillness.
"Still afraid of myself…" she whispered.
Sanguira, her Divine Artifact, leaned against the far wall, its crimson aura dormant, as if sleeping with one eye open.
A knock echoed.
"Hikari?" It was Sylvia's voice—soft, careful.
"You're awake," Hikari replied, not moving.
Sylvia entered, dressed in her loose night robes, silver hair shining in the dark.
"I had a feeling you couldn't sleep."
They sat in silence for a while.
"Your voice helped me once," Hikari said quietly. "Back when... I first awakened as the Vampire's Vessel."
Sylvia looked at her gently.
"Then let me say this now: You're not alone, Hikari. No matter how dark it feels, you are not the monster you fear."
Hikari's hand trembled as she reached for her necklace—a small locket with a faded photo. Her younger self, eyes full of fear, standing with an older woman.
"I promised my sister I'd never become what I was born to be," she said. "But lately… I can feel the hunger again."
"Then let us remind you," Sylvia whispered. "That you're still you."
Location: Gaia's Vault – Sanguira's Trial Chamber (Flashback)
It was cold, darker than any space Hikari had entered before. The trial to claim Sanguira had not been physical—it had been a mirror of her own fears.
The scythe had not simply tested her resolve.
It had devoured her past.
The apparition of her sister had appeared, drenched in blood, speaking with her voice.
"You'll never be more than this curse," the illusion whispered.
"I am not a monster," Hikari said, eyes wide.
"No, you're worse. Because you pretend to be human."
The illusion had lunged—but she hadn't run.
She had embraced it.
And in doing so, the blade had chosen her.
Location: Gaia HQ – Observation Deck
Present day. Hikari stood overlooking the starlit horizon. The Abyssal gates had quieted, but Orion's recent silence unsettled her more.
She heard footsteps. She didn't turn.
"You're always up here," said Cyg.
"And you always find me," she replied, finally glancing at him.
He leaned against the railing beside her. The cold wind pulled at his coat, but his eyes were warmer than usual.
"You've changed since the Abyss Emperor. You've withdrawn."
"I'm dangerous," she said, looking away. "Every time I draw my blade, I wonder if this will be the time I lose myself."
"Then I'll stop you," he said simply.
She looked at him, startled.
"I'm not afraid of you," Cyg continued. "I'm afraid of you giving up on yourself."
The wind paused—just for a second. Her breath caught.
"Why do you care so much?" she asked.
"Because every time I look at you… I see the light you keep trying to hide."
Their eyes met, closer than they had ever dared before.
"And I want to see more of it."
Her heart—so long wrapped in silence—beat just a little louder.
Closing Scene: Training Hall – Sanguira Reactivated
Hikari stood in the center of the ether-circle, Sanguira hovering in front of her. This time, she didn't fear its crimson pulse.
This time, she reached forward.
"I'm not running anymore," she said. "I'll master you—and the darkness inside me."
The blade responded with a low hum, its energy shifting from blood-red to a soft rose glow.
Outside the room, Thea and Eun-Ha watched quietly.
"She's ready," Eun-Ha said.
"No," Thea corrected gently. "She's becoming ready. But the hardest part still lies ahead."
