Chapter 303: Peace Talks
I had to bite back a chuckle as I easily pissed off the Duchess. She was clearly ravingly angry, but her face did not betray a single bit of it. The problem was her microexpressions. She had this small tick on her lips, trying to turn into a sneer for a single second, and she was trying her best to keep her posture from turning into an aggressive stance.
Even if they had A ranks behind them, we had A ranks behind them, and her mana was trying to unleash. She came here angry, and now I taunted her openly, disrespecting her noble title and making her think of me more as a beast than a respected individual. This was critical for us. If we made her do a diplomatic mistake like attacking us, we could use that to increase what we got from the Empire.
The biggest question was whether they realized that we could not move forward. The Empire was mostly located on plains, and the hills we were sitting on were really the only hills until you got closer to the Capital, where their resources originated. They had massive Mines there, and there were some nearby, but not as plentiful as those near the capital.
Now, The Duchess stood before me imposing and pissed off to all hell. Her anger was radiating, and I invited her inside after brief introductions. The simplicity of the tent was just a table and enough chairs for the Duchess and none of the rest of her advisors. They would have to stand behind her as a diplomatic slight. It was showing that we were in control, and they were coming to us, and they did not deserve our respect.
"So," I began, sitting down, gathering the Humans' attention with the Duchess now sitting down and the people around the table facing the Duchess. "Your Empire and Emperor have been unjustly attacking our Sovereign nation and kidnapping our people and using them as slave labor, unjustly breaking your own laws and ours. These unjust attacks started a war with your nation." The Duchess's eyes narrowed as I said my justification, and her face was schooled, but that tick on her lips showed. I continued, "Due to this, we have decided that we will be keeping Border City from now on to buffer our nations in the future, so your Empire no longer believes you can kidnap our people unjustly," I finished.
The woman's eyes turned even more dangerous, "You attacked us without a just cause," She began.
"No, we have perfectly just reasons," I said, cutting her off. "We will not even tolerate that you did not declare war on our nation by attacking our villages and kidnapping our people, and our nations have been in a state of war for over a hundred years due to this. We attacked without needing to declare war, since we were never at war," I told her, and smiled as I saw that tick on her lips again. "Stop trying to insult our intelligence, or I will think you and all your humans lack the intelligence to understand that actions have consequences."
My words were attacking her outright, and their intelligence and one of her people could not hold back. "You fucking beast trash, I will fucking whip" The who stepped forward suddenly ripped apart his body exploding in a bloody paste with the Duchess's mana surging turning the man into a minced paste that no longer could be called human. The blood splattered the tent behind them, and the other advisors went pale, and the Duchess turned to glare.
"Let that be a warning to the rest of you," She said, her voice cold, and I felt a growing respect for her. Even as she was furious, she was in control. "Supreme Commander Chelsea, I would like to request that you keep your youthful passion under control and refrain from cutting me off in the future."
I raised an eyebrow and I smiled, "I will take that into consideration, Ms. Greenwald," I replied.
Her tick twitched a half dozen times, and she took a deep breath. "Is this a peace talk meeting or a place for you to insult me and my Empire?" The Duchess asked, and I giggled.
"It can be both at the same time," I replied, my smile growing, and I opened up my hands, spreading my arms as I continued, "You have been attacking our lands for too long. Our people HATE you humans right now, and I have to restrain my people from just randomly slaughtering you humans like they wish, because we do not wish to become savages like you humans. This does not mean I cannot let the vent a little with my words towards a woman like yourself to let off a little steam."
The Duchess's eyes widened slightly, and she closed them for a moment, and silence took hold. "What do you want for peace?" She asked.
I want your Emperor to punish and free any beast-kin slave, and we will pay for any transportation to return them to our lands, unless," I opened my hand, "in front of a group of our people in a quiet room, they declare that they wish to remain in the Empire. We will have a member of the Kingdom of Arlin or the Dwarvren Kingdom dispatch a third-party observer to facilitate this," I grinned before finishing, "for the first condition."
"Impossible," The Duchess replied simply.
"Then let us meet on the battlefield once again," I said, standing up, and our people stood with me, leaving the Duchess stunned for a moment.
"Stop," She said, holding up a hand, "let me finish my sentence." She finished trying to save her reputation. "It is Impossible for me to put that on a peace treaty and have the nobility and the Emperor sign off on it." She finished.
"Then bring someone above you that can," I replied and looked down at my hands like they were more important. "If you're not even able to negotiate with me, why did they send someone so low-ranked?" I asked, and the fury this time showed completely with a sneer that was so quick that it disappeared just as fast as it appeared.
"I —" She stopped herself and took a deep breath, her hands opening up and her arms spreading. "Supreme Commander Chelsea Loveknot, do you hold ultimate authority for the peace talks?" She asked in a professional voice, hiding her contempt.
"I do," I replied simply, "I hold ultimate authority as the one who made the most warfare achievements in this war," I told her and leaned back, "I can sell whatever I negotiate for they are the WINNERS, Trophies, but I am also here so that we do not go to war again just after a few years. I want to end this conflict, but your Empire has been attacking us for so long, the blood debts need to be paid, and the slaves freed. You will lose a little chunk of flesh. Whether you can sell that to the Emperor is not my problem." I continued, "That is yours, and if you don't, we can push forward and burn your crops year after year," I told her, "We will act like savages and beasts using humans as ammunition for our catapults to decorate your walls and houses. If that is what you want, let us go that route, for I am unpopular for talking to you for peace." I chuckled, "I should tell you, I am being called a traitor for not stabbing into the Empire and taking your next city, or just burning it to the ground, my army and nation are perfectly content to continue the war."
My words did not make her any happier, and she stood, "I believe I need to talk to my advisors and the Emperor, we will continue talking in one week."
"Three days," I replied, and the Duchess turned around, the surprise on her face evident.
"What?" She asked.
"I said three days and we will continue to the talks, or go back to war," I said, "I can tell that you are trying to buy time. I do not know if that is for reinforcements or for some other reason. Either way, I am not going to give you all the time that you want."
"I will see you in three days then," She said, turning around and walking out of the tent, and the Elders put up a barrier.
"What was that?" My mother asked.
"That is a greeting," I said. "I created a reference point for our anger; now any concessions I make will be in reference to the first meeting." I chuckled, "After this, acting a little nicer will seem like diplomatic victories." I laughed. "If we do have to go to war, though, are any of you sad?" I asked, and the looks told me I was completely correct.
