Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Without Morality, You Won't Be Hijacked
A while back, Luna purposely meandered through the streets, eager to find her beloved Captain.
After all, if she needed to locate someone from the security team, why not choose the one she knew well?
Moreover, the thought that just yesterday she had been an enemy with a gun pointed at her, and today she was an ordinary civilian Chevreuse had to protect, utterly fascinated Luna.
"Miss Chevreuse, I wish to accuse a murderer, but I'm feeling somewhat uneasy..."
At these words, Chevreuse immediately followed Luna.
The Special Task Force usually didn't handle matters within the jurisdiction of the Maison Gardiennage. However, if they encountered civilians in distress during their duties, they were still obliged to assist.
Of course, under normal circumstances, civilians who faced such issues would directly report it to the authorities. The Marechaussee Phantoms would then investigate, and finally hand it over to the Gardiennage for handling.
But if a civilian chose to bring a formal accusation, then the priority was given to the trial process.
Feeling Chevreuse's gaze upon her, Luna remained unfazed.
A few extra glances never hurt anyone.
If someone finds me attractive, why not let them admire me?
Upon hearing Chevreuse's warning, the color drained from Judith's face, making her look like an innocent woman being wrongly accused, her vulnerability palpable.
"Miss Luna, aren't you mistaken? How could Miss Judith possibly be a killer?"
"Yeah, that's right. Go on and tell us who she's supposed to have killed."
Compared to Luna, the newcomer to the troupe, the others evidently put more trust in Judith. This was hardly surprising.
Luna was about to respond when hurried footsteps approached from behind her.
"She killed the person closest to her—Mary Bestina."
Despite her quick pace, Navia's steps were composed and steady.
However, her words sent shockwaves through the troupe, all eyes turning towards Judith with expressions of astonishment and disbelief.
Navia halted beside Luna.
"Right, LuLu?" she asked.
LuLu? Chevreuse thought to herself, surprised by such an intimate nickname.
Luna replied with a smile, "It seems you've uncovered the truth. You truly deserve to be the boss of the Spina di Rosula."
"Not as fast as you, though. Heh, thanks for the compliment!" Navia puffed out her chest, clearly delighted.
Before them stood the boss of the Spina di Rosula.
While it was true that the company's reputation couldn't compare to its past glory, that wasn't the case if one considered Navia herself.
Who didn't know Navia was a kind-hearted, genuine, and upright girl?
And yet she was so certain... The troupe members exchanged glances filled with confusion and doubt. After a moment of silent deliberation, they decided to remain quiet. Better to stay on the sidelines and let others do the work, they thought.
"Why would I kill Mary?" Judith said sorrowfully. "She was my most important..."
"We'll provide an answer at the trial," Luna said with a smile.
Romi couldn't sit still anymore.
He stood up from his chair and walked between the two sides.
"Let's all talk this out. Luna, you must have misunderstood something. Judith isn't the type of person who would kill. And Judith, don't be angry. Luna was just joking, right?"
Chevreuse glanced at Luna. "Is that true?"
"Of course not."
Romi took a deep breath and pointed at Luna. "Luna, do you know what you're doing?"
"Bringing truth and justice to the world?"
"You're destroying this theater company!"
It had begun. Chevreuse wished she could cover her ears; she knew this situation would arise.
Navia also started feeling a headache coming on.
She could already guess what the theater director wanted to say.
"Are you aware of how serious it is to bring accusations within the troupe?"
"After we finally overcame our difficulties—when many supporters had already reached back out to me and everyone's careers were about to return to normal..."
The theater members remained silent.
Indeed, if word of the troupe's allegations got out, the newspapers keeping an eye on them could easily wave their pens and scare off any potential sponsors with a few well-placed words.
And then they'd be broke.
Luna stood before him, silently taking the moral lecturing. Her face remained... unchanged!
"If you all want to play a game of Werewolf, feel free. As soon as it gets dark, bang! another person will meet a mysterious death. Imagine dying and not being able to spend any of the money!" Luna laughed.
The faces of the troupe members shifted slightly.
True, even with money, they couldn't be sure if they'd live to spend it.
If what Luna said was true, wouldn't they all have to dance with the wolves?
A hint of fear also flashed across Romi's face, but no matter what, they had to drop the charges!
After that, they could find some other excuse to kick out the playwright, then buy off the newspapers and divert public attention with other inconsequential news.
Once this storm passed, he could still be himself, and the troupe could still step onto the road to stardom...
They absolutely couldn't afford for anything to go wrong now... What if someone died during this period?
Who cares about that kind of thing anyway!
Why not just find a place to bury her? People die in Fontaine every day—what's one more?
As long as it doesn't interfere with my profit.
Romi spoke up, "That's just your side of the story. If you don't believe me, go ask Judith's neighbors—they'll all tell you she was a good person... Stop playing detective games, Luna. Don't you worry about your acting career?"
"If I were to expose the 'good deeds' you've done, which other troupe would have you?"
Luna fell silent for a moment.
"It seems there's a misunderstanding," she said with a soft chuckle. "Does everyone really think we overcame this crisis—and even managed to turn the tide—on our own?"
Chevreuse looked at her with keen interest.
Huh?
Navia blinked, wondering why Luna had suddenly started throwing around such broad accusations. Is this appropriate?
"Lulu, saying that..."
"Shh." Luna pressed a finger to Navia's lips.
Navia had no choice but to close her mouth. She hoped Luna knew what she was saying. Words like these would undoubtedly make Luna's colleagues restless.
Sure enough, as soon as Luna spoke, someone leapt up, clearly anxious.
"That's going too far!"
"Yeah, you're not the only one striving on stage!"
"I can't believe how arrogant you are!"
Luna forcefully stomped her foot, the sound causing everyone to instantly fall silent as if under a spell.
She then shifted her stance, her skirt rippling, and her slender fingers gently brushed against her neck. Her lips parted slightly.
"If you want to know the true extent of our difference in power, then I'll show you right now."
Her voice echoed throughout the entire space.
How exquisite, how awe-inspiring... Her performance during the last stage show paled in comparison! It was no wonder the theater troupe members were astonished, even fearful.
Only one entity could achieve such mastery:
Hydro Archon Furina.
Ridiculous! Is she actually concealing her true strength? Romi's face turned pale.
Chevreuse was rendered speechless: I've heard her singing was extraordinary, but I didn't expect it to surpass all my imaginings... What a pity I'm too busy; otherwise, I'd love to attend an opera performance, if only I had the time.
Navia's eyes sparkled.
How truly beautiful... Now I finally understand why Silver became Luna's fan.
"...Do you understand now?" Luna asked with a smile.
Everyone came back to their senses, wearing various expressions on their faces.
"That's right, the troupe owes its current popularity and fame to me. I wouldn't have to worry about not being wanted, and if I so desired, I could even form my own troupe," Navia said with a grin. "The Spina di Rosula would also give their support!"
Romi couldn't find the words.
In the face of such overwhelming talent, any underhanded or malicious schemes were utterly useless.
Moreover, Luna was still under Furina's gaze... The girl favored by the stage, isn't she...
It was really no laughing matter; they had invited someone only to end up with a divine presence.
Luna smiled. "But I also understand the hard work each of you has put in, and I appreciate the stage we've created together.
"My radiance wasn't achieved by one person alone. That's precisely why I hope all of you will live long lives, making choices that are truly meaningful and correct."
"My accusation is absolutely correct!
"If you want to know the truth, then come to the opera hall."
The expressions of the troupe members shifted noticeably.
The stage was merciless; it only allowed those with talent to shine, and Luna had that talent in spades.
"Now then..." Luna reached out to Judith, whose expression remained uncertain, and said invitingly, "Welcome to my stage, Miss Criminal."
What an intimidating presence, thought Chevreuse.
She'd get along with Madam Furina very well, thought Navia.
