Chapter 9: The Eerie Kitchen, The Veteran Actor Who Immerses Instantly
Compared to others, Liam relatively trusted Emmy more.
Rather, among the current six people, the least likely to be a werewolf in Liam's view was naturally the somewhat silly-looking Rolly.
The second candidate would probably be this delicate Emmy!
But regardless, Liam couldn't completely trust Emmy either.
Just as Emmy didn't seem to fully trust him either.
Moreover, to maintain his "confident and self-assured detective" persona, it wasn't convenient for him to start rummaging around in front of Emmy.
Yet Liam exactly had something he wanted to look for!
"The previous letter mentioned there are crates in the ancient castle, but they're divided into two types - human crates and werewolf crates..."
Liam began searching the engineering room, wanting to see if there were any crates there.
Apart from the generator, the engineering room contained some other equipment and facilities, appearing somewhat cluttered.
According to the letter's contents, the human crates should contain "supplies" and "tools" that would greatly assist the human faction.
If he could find a crate and obtain some useful tools from it, Liam would feel much more confident.
After a quick search, Liam discovered that although the engineering room looked full of debris and extremely messy, But...
Those random objects were utterly useless.
However, Liam couldn't say he found nothing at all.
The lingering smell of incompletely burned diesel from the generator, the constantly blaring alarm, and the choking ancient dust stirred up from rummaging through the debris gave Liam a dizzying and headache-inducing experience.
"We've already wasted two minutes… No, we can't keep dawdling in this room!"
Liam opened the door to the engineering room.
After stepping out, he immediately felt refreshed.
Next, he focused on the room opposite the staircase.
"This door looks quite large."
Liam muttered to himself.
The castle had two staircases: one was a central spiral staircase spanning all three floors, and the other was a zigzag staircase at the castle's edge.
The castle's vast area included over a dozen rooms or secret chambers on the second floor alone.
With time pressing, Liam had to prioritize proximity.
This was also why they had to split into groups—the castle's sheer size made clustering inefficient. Even with planned routes, the tight schedule would drastically lower error tolerance.
As he approached the large door, Liam read the room name on the plaque.
"Kitchen."
Liam did not hesitate and pushed open the kitchen door.
Upon entering the kitchen, Liam detected a faint fishy odor.
"D*mn, how long has this kitchen gone uncleaned?" Liam wrinkled his nose involuntarily, "No wonder there's a 'clean the kitchen' task later on the schedule."
"But who knows what traps might activate or dangers might emerge if we don't clean it..."
The kitchen walls bore dark reddish stains resembling long-dried blood.
The floor held even more bloodstains, accompanied by extreme filth.
The countertops were littered not only with shattered raw meat but even displayed hanging severed limbs!
Witnessing this scene, Liam shuddered violently.
Particularly those shriveled, twisted limbs—vaguely humanoid yet not entirely resembling humans.
This sight triggered Liam's "Happy Valley Effect" response to its fullest.
"Why is the kitchen like this? These severed limbs and flesh are left unattended? The owner of this castle has such morbid tastes..."
"Living in such a grand house but can't afford a cleaner? At least hire a hygiene-conscious chef."
Liam forced down his disgust and leaned closer to examine the severed limb.
Covered entirely in bloodstains and partially decomposed and desiccated, Liam found it difficult to determine what kind of creature this limb belonged to.
From afar, it appeared vaguely humanoid, but up close, the resemblance faded.
Unwilling to linger, Liam promptly left the area.
However, after exiting the kitchen, he noticed a brown box placed in a corner adjacent to it.
"A box! A brown box!" Liam exclaimed with excitement.
The red box belonged to the werewolf... as mentioned in the letter.
Since his identity was human, he likely couldn't open the werewolf's box.
But this brown box before him meant it was one accessible to humans!
Liam stepped forward and flipped the switch on the box. As if responding to him, the switch clicked and the box opened.
Inside was a perfectly packaged bread and a bottle of water.
"Food... It seems whoever left this box knew there'd be no decent food in this castle, given how filthy that kitchen was earlier."
Liam picked up the bread, tore open the packaging, and quickly devoured it with water.
After eating his fill, he returned to the engineering room.
He didn't want to reveal to Emmy that he'd opened a human's box. Though humans were good roles... Most crucially, the two werewolves probably didn't know each other's identities.
The letter had hinted at this point.
"The werewolf's disguise can often deceive even their kind."
In other words, in this game, the werewolves didn't know who their other teammate was either.
Therefore, Liam didn't need to prove his "human" identity by opening boxes.
This was not beneficial for him—assuming Emmy was a werewolf, she definitely wouldn't act before confirming whether he was her pack member.
"But why hasn't Emmy returned yet?"
Time was running dangerously short.
Liam had been mentally counting since earlier—Emmy had now been gone for about eight minutes, exceeding his estimated five-and-a-half-minute timeframe by over two minutes.
This made the time to complete the tasks even tighter.
If Emmy didn't return soon, they might not finish the tasks at all.
"Could it be that something unexpected happened?"
Liam began struggling with whether he should go to the first floor to look for Emmy.
But before he could resolve to take action...
"Bang!"
The engineering room door swung open.
Emmy appeared breathless at the doorway, clutching a bucket of small lubricant oil bottles.
Her hair was disheveled, sweat glistened at her temples, and her white lab coat bore smudges of dirt.
Emmy quickly walked forward and said with great apology, "Sorry... The lubricant was placed a bit high. It took some effort for me to retrieve it."
As he approached, Liam noticed Emmy's face was also flushed. She kept tugging at the collar of her round-neck shirt under the lab coat to fan herself, appearing delicate and pitiable.
Liam subconsciously wanted to comfort her, but he immediately realized...
His current persona was that of an aloof and self-absorbed "detective".
Thus, veteran actor Liam instantly slipped into character, merely responding with a cold snort.
"Not bad, it didn't take too long."
With that, he took the lubricant and, with a familiar routine, located the malfunctioning part of the engine that required lubrication, effortlessly completing the task.
