Frieren in Danmachi

Chapter 17: Chapter 16 - Creating an Elf.

POV: Frieren

When I woke up, Serie was lying next to me, sleeping peacefully. I stared at her face for a few seconds before getting up. I went to the bathroom and washed my face before changing clothes.

I got dressed and went to the kitchen to prepare something for breakfast.

"There aren't many options. Not even eggs..."

The only things available were meat, vegetables, and fruit—things easily found in the forest.

I'll have to ask Ryuu to bring a few supplies from the city next time she comes by.

Since I didn't feel like eating meat in the morning, I grabbed some fruit and sat down. I ate in silence while thinking about what happened yesterday. "I couldn't control my anger."

I've never been like that before.

Maybe the consciousness of the man inside me has something to do with it?

Was it his rage?

"I don't know what happened, but I need to be careful."

If I lose control at a crucial moment, I'll die.

I finished eating and stood up. I left Serie's house, and the moment I stepped outside, a cold wind hit my body. Along with the cold breeze came magical particles floating through the air.

They've been increasing over time. The forest is coming back to life.

I went to the tree and entered it. Then I touched its trunk and collected the 1,000 primordial elements it had produced. "I'll try to reach the next circle in the next few days."

I climbed the stairs and sat down.

[Conversion started]

Some time passed since those events, and I finally managed to reach the second circle. It took longer than I expected, but that was probably because I hadn't evolved the tree in the past few days.

I had been saving all my mana, sensing that something dangerous could happen at any moment.

Name: Frieren

Cultivation: 2nd Magic Circle – First Layer (Conversion bonus +110%)

Magical Proficiency: 0 / 102,400

Mana: 52,224 / 102,400

Elements Collected: 0

Talent: Fast Conversion (conversion +10%)

"My current status is good."

I can store up to 100,000 mana points. The magical proficiency required to reach the next layer increased significantly, but who cares? My conversion rate is also improving rapidly.

I got up and walked down the stairs. Just as I reached the bottom, the door opened.

It was Serie—but she wasn't alone.

"Ryuu, it's good to see you."

"How are you feeling?" Ryuu asked.

"I'm fine. I'm calmer now."

"That's good. Don't act on impulse—you could end up dead. And if you die, the entire elven race is doomed," Ryuu said seriously.

She is right.

Only I can evolve the World Tree. Only I can create elves.

'Speaking of which, isn't it time to create some elves?'

"What would you two think if new elves started being born?"

"That would be amazing! We could rebuild the village," Serie said.

I thought about it more carefully and said, "The tree will start creating elves again today."

"What? How do you know that?" Ryuu asked.

"She knows because she's directly connected to the tree. She can see all of its abilities. Right, queen?"

I nodded in agreement.

"I can ask the tree to create new elves whenever I want. I had been holding back, but I think it's time. I feel strong enough to protect them if anything happens."

I'm confident I can handle many enemies if necessary.

After reaching the second circle, my power increased a lot. I gained some bonuses, but I haven't even checked them yet.

"You're going to do it now? I want to see it. It's been years since I witnessed the birth of an elf," Ryuu said eagerly.

"What's so special about it?"

"It is special, queen. How many years has it been since the last elf was born? I don't even remember when it last happened."

"..."

She's right. It's something truly special.

Considering how low the elven population is—and how close we are to extinction—yes, it's definitely special.

"Alright. I'll do it."

I stepped out of the tree, and once I was outside, I looked up. I started remembering how the birth of elves used to happen. It was unpredictable, but it occurred at least once a year.

I approached the trunk of the tree and touched it with my hand.

"What is she doing?" Ryuu asked Serie.

"Like I said, the queen can see all of the tree's abilities. They share a deep connection. She's probably asking it to start the creation of an elf."

I heard Serie's words and nearly laughed.

Well, she's not entirely wrong. But it's not that magical.

The tree's status screen appeared, and I looked at the number of elves I could create. "I can create up to 30 elves." It said I'd need to spend mana to create one, but how much?

Then, in my mind, I asked the tree to create one elf.

As soon as I made the request, a new thing appeared in front of me:

[Do you wish to spend 10,000 mana to create a common elf?]

"10,000? That's not that much."

"What did you say?"

"Oh, nothing. Just talking to the tree." I smiled and confirmed the expenditure of 10,000 mana to create an elf.

As soon as I did, my mana began to drain, and I looked up. I enhanced my vision and focused on a leaf that had started to grow.

"Look." I called out to them and pointed at the leaf.

It grew rapidly and began to fold, turning into a cocoon-like structure. The green leaf started to shine with a radiant golden hue, releasing waves of magical particles.

After five minutes of waiting, it finally happened.

The leaf fell.

I thought it would fall quickly, but instead, it floated gently to the ground.

When it touched the ground, the cocoon slowly opened.

Inside it… was a beautiful woman.
