Freedom's daughter

Chapter 7: Believing in Oneself

It's since the day I met him that I can't stop thinking about how amazing Histrio is.

He had to live in a new world, adapting to circumstances he wasn't used to, and yet he never discouraged himself, always moving forward.

The only reason I'm still alive and free is because of him.

It doesn't matter from what angle I look at him, from my perspective, all I'm capable of seeing is his back.

And now that he needs me, all I can do is freeze in fear, waiting for them to bring me to prison, scared of doing something stupid again, like I ruined his life...

Since I was born this way, I was cursed.

I shouldn't have left Hell; it's what my father used to tell me.

But I wanted to know, I wanted to know why in her youth, my mother, wanted to visit the mortal realm and leave Hell...

She always used to tell me the reason she left was that she was curious, but the reason she stayed is that she met people worth being called friends.

I think I found one, too. I finally found a friend after years of loneliness.

I just wish you two, Mom and Dad, were here to see him.

We walked only a few seconds, and if I turn around, I can still see him lying on the ground. Yet, for me, it was like an eternity.

Cough...

"!"

"What now?!"

Both Dante and I turn around.

Before us, someone is standing, a man whose back I can only see.

"Who said you can leave?" Cough... "Shit..."

"Unbelievable, why don't you die already?"

"Histrio... Why did you..."

"Lyet, I told you to believe in me, that I won't die before you manage to pull it off."

He did say this, but I thought he wasn't serious...

Does he really believe I can do it...?

"Well, you could have faked to die and escape. Seems like you are less intelligent than I thought. You, go and finish him."

And so a knight leaves me and walks to Histrio, ready to fight again.

I... I have to try... I don't want to be a burden...

The fight starts again. Histrio manages to dodge like he did before, but his movements are significantly slower.

If earlier was enough to read the attack based on how it initially moved, now, to compensate, he has to read the attack even before it, already from when the knight steps forward before slashing.

I need a spell... Any spell... Even if I can't control it.... Please...

I close my eyes and try to channel my mana into my free arm... I need to free myself, and killing the knight restricting me is the only way.

Once I release my mana, though, I transform a person in the crowd into a cow...

Come on!!

"Lyet! Try again!"

Again...

"Oh, come on, this is just a waste of time. Join him and kill that sinner already. Lyet is useless anyway, there's no need to block her."

Useless...

No...

I work my mana again... I need something to distract the two knights at least... So I try to target them with whatever I'm going to cast.

Or at least to heal Histrio... Any of them...

Eventually, a massive storm occurs above the entire kingdom. Black clouds prevent the sunlight from reaching the entire place, and raindrops start to fall.

No... This'll make Histrio's job even harder—why is he smirking?!

"Thanks, Lyet!"

No, it won't, I get it... the water'll make everything more slippery, therefore Histrio'll have a harder time moving properly to dodge. But at the same time, the two knights are massive and can't accurately balance themself when they attack... Their slashes will be even slower...

Now, again... I work my mana as I step forward to the fight...

...

The next moment, a black sphere gets shot from my hand, hitting a knight... Completely erasing anything it touches.

"How did you..."

"Good job, Lyet!"

I did it... It was a high-level spell...

Slam!

Something no... Someone pushes me to the ground, pinning me below her.

"I knew you demons were dangerous, but I couldn't believe you, of all, could achieve such a feat, even if by luck."

Dante punches me, making my nose bleed. I can't concentrate on my mana now...

I try to do my best to block her assault, but she is more experienced, always knowing how to avoid my guard, wherever I position it.

"Lyet!"

"I was ready to heal that useless knight, but you had to be lucky and cast the only type of spell that could prevent it. Now, bringing you to the castle is not an option, I'm going to kill you here and now."

Slam! Slam! Slam!

"Die!"

-

Shit! I have to help her. But this titan won't let me go! Then...

I have heard her enough...

"Knight, stop attacking him!"

The knight interrupts his movements, puzzled about why Dante spoke this order.

I used this moment of hesitation to run past him; the back is killing me, but there's no other way around.

"Idiot! He just mimicked my voice!" Screams Dante, but it's too late.

She stops her assault against Lyet to look at me.

Fool, there was no way I could have won in strength and free Lyet; I just wanted you to stop.

Slam!

This time, the punch was Lyet's, which made Dante fly several meters against a house.

I help Lyet stand up.

"Lyet, one last time, against him."

"Yes!"

I take her hand, pointing it at the remaining knight.

She closes her eyes, calms herself, and is ready to shoot.

A bunch of chains ascend from the ground, restraining the knight.

It was a low-level spell. He'll soon break free, but it gives us enough time to escape.

While holding Lyet's hand, I run into an alley on the side, where no one is gathered.

We have to find a way to get out of the city now. The weather surely will help us, but I can't rely only on the darkness to not get identified.

But for now...

"Lyet... Good job. I knew you could do it."

"Histrio..."
