Freedom's daughter

Chapter 5: Escape

I wake up as the morning's sunlight hits my eyes.

I have to talk with Lyet. Sigh...

Not because she acted childish yesterday night, but because I think it's better if we leave this city, mainly for her. She probably thought about it as well. I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

For me, it's not a problem to change place; I can continue my research anywhere I want.

-

I knock at her door to see if she is awake.

knock...

knock...

knock...

Ok, now I'm worried. What if they found out she is here and kidnapped her?

I knock harder. Come on! Open up!

...

...

Finally, the door opens... revealing a Lyet with messy hair and sleepy eyes... And mad.

"What do you want? It's early!"

"I think we should move away from this city... It's not good for you to stay. Can I come in so we can talk?"

"Mmmm... Sure... Come."

She sits at her desk and starts fixing her long hair. She is clearly still mad at me.

"Do you know the area around the city? Is there any good place we could go?" I ask.

"Yes, there are a few cities we could move on to, but it's days of travel. I would suggest Mora, the closest one."

"Sure, I trust you on this."

"It better be."

Sigh... "If it's ok with you, I think we should move as soon as we can."

"Fair, I'll be ready in half an hour at most."

"I'll wait for you down at the entrance, then."

"Mh..."

-

Before doing anything, I want to check how the situation outside the inn is; they are likely still looking for her.

This city is enormous, yet it's dense with guards patrolling. I hope it's only in this area.

I'm currently walking in a crowded square, a few hundred meters from the inn, when something catches my eye: two, a few meters tall, armored knights. The sound of their steps is so heavy that it could be heard anywhere.

I can't even see their face, but they clearly aren't humans.

With them, there's a... nun? She isn't exactly dressed as one from my world, but it's close enough.

Wait! I remember that cross around her neck, it's the same cross the first terrorist had, the one who could shoot fireballs.

I have a bad feeling, so I try to follow them while hiding in the crowd.

The direction they are walking is to the inn.

There's one thing that bothers me more than anything: her eyes. When you walk, even though you know where you are going, you tend to watch your surroundings, be it to orient yourself, because of a distraction, or out of curiosity. I never saw a person looking perfectly straight the whole time with such intensity as this nun, as if she were watching something I can't see.

In a magical world, a spell that allows you to perceive or find a 'something' must exist, right? How high are the chances she is currently looking at Lyet?

I must go back as quickly as possible.

-

Fuck!

Knock! knock!

"Lyet, open the door, please!"

She comes out.

"Hey! I said I would be ready in half an hour!"

"There's no time. They are coming."

"What?!"

"Come on, quick!"

I grab the bag she was preparing and close it.

"I'll carry it, let's go now."

"...Ok."

She puts on her hoodie, and we move out. I also inform her about what I saw.

"Histrio, do you think we'll make it?"

"Yes. Indeed."

I can perceive some admiration in her eyes after saying it, but honestly, I lied, I'm more scared than I show, and the more I overthink, the more scared I become. If they found out her position today, there's a chance they would close the city temporarily, leaving us no chance of escape.

We should have moved yesterday! I'm such an idiot!

I can hear the two giants' footsteps approaching... If they really can know where Lyet is, then... I'm left with no other choice...

"Lyet... stop... It's useless..."

"But you said..."

"I know what I said, but if they can see where you are, then it's useless to run away."

"Then what—"

"We have no choice but to fight."

"Histrio! If what you said is true, then at my current level, it doesn't matter what spell I throw at them! I won't cause any damage to their armor! It's specifically made to endure most high-level spells!" She says firmly.

"Wait, I thought girls couldn't use magic to harm in the first place..."

"Well... I..."

"It's her, under the hoodie." A woman says in a calm voice.

Well, I was ready for this... Sigh...

I turn around and see the two massive knights with the nun behind them.

Calm yourself... No need to panic...

I hold Lyet's hand to reassure her.

"What do you want from her? It's the third time already, come on!"

"Histrio... No..."

"She was born from a sin. Her existence will doom everyone." The nun states.

"What do you mean?"

"Histrio... Please... Stop..."

"Didn't she tell you already? Then you are excused, if you weren't aware of her nature, we have no reason to kill you. I missjudged you."

"Her nature? Stop being vague! Also, who the hell are you to judge people?!"

"My name is Dante, an exorcist. Now, please, you may leave, and we won't accuse you of helping a demon."

"A demon...? Lyet?"

I look at her. Her violet eyes are trembling as she looks into mine...

"I'm sorry Histrio... I'm really sorry..."

"Now, quick, we can't wait any longer."

I peek at them. The knights are in position, just waiting for the order to attack.

No matter how much I try to fake it, I'm terribly scared of them.

If an average person here is already enough to equal a gorilla, then they surely surpassed any animal that ever existed in my world.

I can just leave Lyet here, they said they won't touch me if I do...

"Lyet... You promised you could take me home one day, right?"

"Histrio... You are trembling... It's fine, leave... I understand."

Sigh...

"I said I believe in you, didn't I? Also, how could I abandon my only friend?"

"Histrio..." Says Lyet with a tear on her cheek.

"I take it as your decision. Exorcists' knights, make sure to kill him. He is accused of helping a demon, and the sentence for it is death."

With that, the two knights break their positions, stepping forward...
