The lineup at that time primarily featured England's veteran goalkeeper Seaman and the second-choice keeper Lehmann. The left-back was Ashley Cole, developed through the club's youth academy, who had long been the starting left-back for the England national team, consistently ranking among the top three left-backs globally. Right-back Lauren, while not flashy, was very dedicated and hardworking.
In central defense were the "Black Iron Tower" Sol Campbell, veteran Martin Keown, and Ivorian international Kolo Touré. In midfield, there was Patrick Vieira, who had grown into one of the world's top defensive midfielders, alongside Brazilian international Gilberto Silva. On the left wing was the stylish French winger Robert Pires. On the right wing was Swedish sharpshooter Ljungberg. The bench also included versatile Brazilian Edu, who later became Arsenal's technical director responsible for player transactions.
Up front were the "King of Highbury" Thierry Henry, partnered with the aging yet still effective Bergkamp, along with "African Ostrich" Kanu and "French Lynx" Wiltord. That year's lineup was indeed ridiculously strong. Unfortunately, a lack of depth in rotation led to failure in achieving success in the Champions League, which remains Wenger's lifelong regret.
Subsequently, the Premier League entered an era of financial power, while Arsenal, burdened with debt from building a new stadium, had to cut expenses drastically. Players from the unbeaten season grew old or left, and their glory faded away. However, Wenger used his exceptional vision and ability to nurture young players to create a low-cost youth squad that could be termed "Wenger's Second Phase." Although this youth squad did not win the Premier League title, it remained a force not to be overlooked in the league.
Unfortunately, to repay debts, the club lived frugally for a long time, leading young talents to leave for championships or money. Among them were the most famous players referred to by Arsenal fans as the "Four Gentlemen": "Loyalty Law" Fabregas, "Van Heart" Van Persie, "Selfish" Nasri, and "Song of Fame" Alex Song. This offseason's departures of Van Persie and Alex Song essentially marked the failure of Wenger's Second Phase.
The beleaguered old coach Wenger had long since lost his ambition. He questioned whether he still had the capability to lead the club back to its peak. One day before the official start of the Champions League group stage, Lu Junfeng arrived in Montpellier, France, with his teammates on a chartered flight. The name of last year's Ligue 1 champion is that of their city.
Feeling somewhat bored on the plane, Lu ate quite a bit of airplane food. Unfortunately for him, team management was very strict; all he received were low-fat meals as decided by Wenger. Wenger hoped Lu would slim down a bit to improve his speed and agility. To this end, he required Lu to give up all sugary drinks and even chocolate.
Lu felt helpless. His physique was due to circumstances beyond his control! His weight could not simply be reduced at will! However, if he did not follow the head coach's dietary management plan, he would be seen as greedy and lazy! To increase his compatibility with Messi's template, he had no choice but to endure!
After arriving at their destination on the team charter flight, everyone was transported by bus to their booked hotel. Wenger strictly forbade any player from going out freely. The team was currently at a low point in performance; media and fans were relentlessly criticizing them. In such circumstances, anyone daring to break discipline would be sitting on the bench for a long time.
Lu Junfeng was assigned to share a standard room with reserve goalkeeper James Shea. First-team members generally had single rooms as their benefit. For the club, excellent players are their best assets and must be taken care of in every aspect. Lu didn't mind. The standard room at this hotel was already quite luxurious.
While Lu Junfeng slept soundly, a small stir occurred on sports forums back in China. There was a Chinese player on Arsenal's Champions League roster that excited some fans. Being included in the Champions League squad indicated recognition from coach Wenger; this could very well be another young talent nurtured by Arsenal!
Moreover, Arsenal had been performing poorly lately, going four league matches without a win and failing to score a single goal; thus they would surely take this Champions League group match very seriously in an effort to turn around their recent slump. In such circumstances, they wouldn't include players just to fill spots. This indicated that Lu Junfeng was capable of making an impact on the field.
Soon enough, enthusiastic fans began searching for information about Lu Junfeng to learn about his development trajectory. Then someone recognized him. Wasn't he that once-renowned "Messi successor," a talented young boy known for his dazzling dribbling skills? Moreover, he went abroad to England at just 12 years old and was once highly anticipated.
Who knew he ended up languishing in a small club in a lower-tier league and slowly faded from public view? Recently joining Arsenal's youth team only garnered minor attention. Then they discovered that that once skinny little boy had grown into a muscular man standing 190 cm tall and weighing 206 pounds!
