Early the next morning, Lu Junfeng arrived at the training base to warm up. He wanted to leave a good impression of diligence and hard work on the coaches. As long as he was given a chance to play, he was sure he could astonish everyone!
Once most of the players had gathered, reserve team coach Banfield came over to take the players whose names were called to the first team training ground. This group included not only Lu and Li Ke but also Gnabry, Bellerín, Eisfeld (midfielder), Miguel (defender), and others. The remaining players could only watch enviously as they left, hoping to be part of the next group.
The competition in professional leagues is extremely fierce; having one or two players from the same age group in the youth team establish themselves in Arsenal's first team is already quite impressive. Others either have to go to smaller clubs or lower leagues to continue their careers, or they might eventually leave football altogether and start new lives. Fate plays a significant role in this. Many star players almost took different paths when they were younger.
For example, Jamie Vardy, who would later perform the "Leicester City Miracle," was playing in England's eighth tier at 18 years old, earning only £30 a week. To avoid starving, he had to work part-time at a medical equipment factory. Virgil van Dijk, who would later be hailed as "the world's best center-back," washed dishes in restaurants at 18 just to fill his stomach, which often made him miss training and led to his elimination from the training camp. If it weren't for someone recognizing his potential, Van Dijk might have ended up as a professional dishwasher today.
Even those "geniuses" who joined Arsenal's youth academy at a young age often remain anonymous as adults. Being able to play in professional leagues is already considered a successful football career.
Banfield handed this group of reserve players over to Arsenal's current first-team assistant coach, Bould. Bould was a robust bald man who appeared quite serious. He had just become the head assistant coach this season. Previously, Wenger's assistant coach was the well-known Arsenal fan "Rice Uncle" Pat Rice. However, Rice was getting older and lacked energy. Moreover, he was quite upset about losing all the core players he had nurtured over the years and could no longer fulfill his duties as an assistant coach; he was now responsible for scouting instead.
Head coach Wenger did not appear on the training ground today. With four winless league matches and no goals scored, he was under immense pressure. Some of Arsenal's fervent fans couldn't bear this outcome and had caused disturbances outside the training base and Emirates Stadium multiple times. There were even banners outside the base that read "Wenger OUT." Rumor had it that some radical fans planned to fly a banner over the home match to protest and demand that the club make immediate changes!
Last season, Arsenal also had a poor start. They went three matches without a win and suffered an embarrassing 2-8 loss at Manchester United! Fortunately, that humiliating defeat made the club realize its mistakes, leading to frantic purchases before the transfer deadline. Among those bought were Arteta and Mertesacker, who became key figures for the team. Combined with van Persie's breakout performance, Arsenal ultimately secured third place in the league and smoothly qualified for the Champions League for the new season.
Now with their points after four matches worse than last season, shouldn't the club do something? Either fire the head coach! Or spend money on star players! If nothing is done, this season will mark the beginning of Arsenal's decline! Unfortunately, fans were unwilling to accept this reality—that Arsenal's appeal to star players had significantly diminished. How much allure can a team that frequently sells its captain and loses its core players have?
While Wenger dealt with other matters, Bould took charge of training. He had the young players newly promoted to the first team introduce themselves briefly before integrating them into various warm-up exercises with the team. The atmosphere on the training ground was very oppressive; all players wore serious expressions as if they were attending a funeral. If they could still smile while training after four winless matches, then Arsenal would truly be a relegation-threatened team.
Unlike reserve team training, first-team sessions focused much less on individual skills. They practiced quick passing and various small combinations as if they were playing a game. This aligned with Arsenal's traditional style of play. However, Lu made quite a few mistakes. His footwork skills were indeed average at this point.
At the same time, he was also under intense scrutiny from both coaches and teammates. Most first-team players had heard about this guy who scored four goals in one reserve match. Scoring four goals in a reserve league match might not mean much, but being a center forward who stood at 1.9 meters tall and weighed over 200 pounds with decent speed and agility was relatively rare.
Promoting him to the first team clearly indicated that coaches were looking internally for someone capable of breaking through defenses. Afterward, they engaged in small-sided games during practice. This was Lu's moment to showcase his talents! Arsenal players quickly discovered that no one could hold up against Lu one-on-one!
Those taller than him couldn't match his speed; those faster than him couldn't match his strength; and there simply weren't any who could match both! Although Arsenal center-back Mertesacker stood at an impressive 198 cm tall, he weighed only around 180 pounds—he couldn't compete with Lu's power! Their one-on-one drills became quite entertaining as teammates jokingly referred to it as "Rhino Turn vs. Aircraft Carrier Turn!"
