Chapter 936: Imitation
Kanami was a far less 'gentle' warrior than her brother was.
Well into her battle, the screams of demons carried on for miles into the surrounding area. Luckily, the old couple lived on a rather isolated stretch of land.
Were it not for this convenient factor, there was no way a fight of this proportion wouldn't have drawn significant attention.
Kanami was a nightmarish vision.
She moved like a blur while carving through demons with no hesitation. Of the entire group, only three still had their heads.
Mammon had remained remarkably undamaged so far. He was being careful to stay out of Kanami's reach while watching the battle from a safe distance and occasionally, firing off a quick spell or two designed to inconvenience Kanami as much as possible.
She always managed to shrug it off somehow.
But in the midst of the bloody and chaotic battle, Kanami and Mammon coincidentally locked eyes with the tiny berserker.
Kanami flicked the blood off her sword and somersaulted over the heads of the last two demons.
She tightened her grip on her sword and swung the weapon in a wide arc.
The blade never even touched Mammon. However, the arc of wind it created was an entirely different story.
A gust of wind so sharp and so fast rushed through the air and cut Mammon fully across the stomach before he could even raise his defenses.
Bright golden blood spilled out onto the grass in droves, and Mammon dropped to his knees while wailing.
Kanami appeared before him faster than his first tear could hit the ground.
She swung the flat side of her blade overhead and dropped the thick piece of dragon scale onto the demon's head.
A satisfying crunch erupted from the crown of the demon's head. More blood spilled from his nose, ears, and even his eyes.
For a moment, Kanami saw the light leave her uncle's eyes. But that illusion barely even lasted a second.
Kanami noticed the ground underneath her stirring.
She hastily leapt out of the way as the liquid hardened and crystallized.
Spires of golden, metallic sanguine erupted from the ground and aimed for her skin.
Kanami formed her scales along the length of her body in an instant.
The spires of hardened blood broke against her skin like ice against stone. She showed a smile full of pointed teeth as if to gloat.
For a moment, Mammon had completely forgotten that this was supposedly Asmodeus' child. Her feral nature wasn't like his at all.
But it reminded him of their father, Lucifer, instantly.
"Beastly bitch!"
Kanami smiled even more animalistically. "Who did you think you were facing?"
There was a distinctive glow coming from the back of her throat.
A spiral of flame erupted from her mouth and consumed Mammon in his entirety.
Her flames were so powerful that they instantly turned a mid-60s cool night into a 90-degree hell.
Kanami closed her mouth and ducked just in time to avoid an attack from the other two demons she had left alive.
She appeared behind them in an instant and drove her claws through the back of their necks, grabbing hold of their spines.
Kanami roared defiantly and pulled the bone from their flesh, instantly bringing an end to their lives.
As she watched their bodies crumple to the ground and burst into piles of powder.
When the only sound was the lingering flicker of flames, Kanami finally lowered her guard.
She looked around the battlefield at the damage she had wrought and grimaced slightly.
The cleanup was always the part of the battle that she hated the most. She had gotten used to having others do it for her over the past few hundred years.
Kanami looked towards the window where the bulldog, Fat Face, was watching the entire battle go down.
Poor thing must've been cold… she was shaking like a leaf.
'Did he ever tell you… about the day he fled Hell..?'
Kanami whirled around immediately when she heard the familiar voice play in her head.
She found Mammon, or what was left of him, kneeling in the same spot as before.
All that was left of him was a set of diamond bones more valuable than anything else on this continent.
The bones were beginning to stir.
'Your father never could hack it. He was overtly flamboyant and only cared about passions and sex. We tried to set him straight, but he just couldn't break his habits...'
Mammon's bones popped out of place and elongated. A dark aura surrounded his remains as his flesh grew back, tendon by tendon.
But when he regenerated, he did so unlike before.
Kanami only noticed something was wrong when he started growing wings.
Not demonic ones. These were almost angelic with their resplendent dark golden color and glittery feathers.
But perhaps what was the most damning was the tainted gold flames that spread to life on the wings of the creature.
And then there was his actual body...
Mammon lost the fat around his stomach and face. What was left behind was nothing but pure muscle like iron.
The surprising thing were his scales. Kanami could tell that they weren't dragon in origin. She just couldn't place where she had seen them before...
Multiple tails sprouted from Mammon's tailbone. But upon closer inspection, Kanami realized that they were more like tentacles.
As Mammon grew farther in power, Kanami noticed all of the different auras clashing in his body.
It finally dawned on her what she was looking at. An imitation.
"What's wrong, child? You look mighty overwhelmed." Mammon grinned with two new tusks in his mouth.
Kanami narrowed her eyes as she recalled her sword to her grasp. For a moment, she forgot where she was. All she could think about was who she was.
"I'm unsure why you believed that this would shake me. Your master isn't the first one to consider using the power of eldritch horrors to make an army. He will hardly be the last."
Kanami stabbed her sword into the ground.
The heat of the air rose dramatically. Wayward brush fires started up everywhere.
A dark blue cube enclosed Kanami and Mammon within a single space, fully isolating them from the outside world.
Kanami wore basic sweats when the day first started. But as the battle raged, her clothes went up in flame and were replaced with her brilliant armor.
As her cape fluttered heroically behind her back, she slid her helmet down over her face. "You may think of what is to come as the greatest honor of your life. I will show you now why the glory of the Nevi'im can never be replicated."
Mammon drew his own armaments. A gold and jewel-encrusted cudgel, even larger than most cars.
"Why replicate, dear niece, when one can improve..?"
Mammon moved first with a new and frightening speed. It was almost like he blinked in and out of existence.
He swung his cudgel overhead and aimed to pay Kanami back for the earlier insult he suffered at her hands.
However, Kanami was not such a novice that she would have simply allowed his attack to come to pass.
She raised her sword overhead to protect herself from the titanic clash that was to come.
When their powers collided, Kanami was incredibly glad that she had decided to wear a helmet. She wouldn't have been able to hide the surprise on her face otherwise.
Mammon's physical strength was close enough to hers that it was jarring. She never expected to come across someone like this outside of Tehom. Mammon was as strong as Hajun or Absalom.
Kanami immediately formed a dangerous theory, but elected to push it to the back of her mind for the time being.
Mammon's strikes were relentless. They came as quickly as tidal waves and could crush stars. Each blow felt like it contained the force of an exploding sun.
As Kanami blocked and defended, her weapon began to visibly heat up.
By the time the last series of strikes came from Mammon's cudgel, Kanami's blade was glowing white like a star.
At the first gap in attacks, Kanami's weapon seemingly exploded.
A deafening sound, far greater than any supernova.
Kanami was hoping that her maneuver would force a separation, and in the best case, end the battle in one fell swoop.
However, she would prove not to be so lucky. Not only was Maammon not vaporized completely, but her attack had only managed to burn away the surface of his skin.
"Annoyang woman..!" Mammon slammed his head against Kanami's and rattled both of their skulls.
Kanami gritted her teeth as she kept her mind from lapsing in focus and drew her head back for a headbutt of her own.
However, Mammon's tentacle caught her off guard.
One discretely wrapped around her ankle and flung her into the air.
Kanami readjusted herself in midair and threw out her hand.
Before she could fire her spell, Mammon knocked aside her hand with his cudgel and slammed his head into her helmet once more.
Kanami kept her head from being jerked back, but ground her teeth together in frustration.
Mammon forcefully wrapped his body around Kanami's.
Spiked protrusions of gold burst from his body and impaled Kanami all over.
She barely managed to hold back a scream.
Mammon laughed jovially. His celebration however was cut short when Kanami's head transformed into that of a giant dragon.
She opened her maw as wide as she possibly could and bit down on Mammon's shoulder- inspiring a scream of anger from him as well.
Kanami's red eyes burned with hate. SHe dug her teeth into Mammon until she could feel herself scraping against his bones.
'Blood for blood, Uncle. You ay return from death s often as you like. I will be sure to send you back into her arms every time!'
