Chapter 5: Walking The Streets with a Girl in Green

Chapter Text

Date: April 26, 2011

I had arrived a few minutes early, my desire to be punctual once again leading me to have to wait around for several minutes with nothing to do. Which is how I came to be holding a small bag of chocolates in my hand, having purchased them from a nearby store while I waited.

What I hadn't quite thought through when I went to get them was that I was wearing my costume, and I had drawn more than a couple concerned stares. The woman manning the counter seemed about ready to call the police, probably assuming I was going to rob the store before I had waved her worries off, telling her I was just there to buy a present for a friend. It wasn't my smartest move, but boredom drives a man to many things, and buying a present for my soon to be patrol partner wasn't that bad.

Checking my watch and seeing that I still had a minute or two to wait, I continued to watch the area around me, or more specifically the woman who was trying to sneakily take my picture. She definitely wasn't the first to try it this evening, but she certainly was the first to try to hide her attempted photography. Her eyes met the visor of my helmet and she moved towards me as if it was an invitation.

"Hey, can I get your autograph?" I hadn't been expecting that, and, seeing as I really haven't done anything as a cape I found it strange. There's no way this lady has any idea who I am but to be fair just seeing my quickly put together costume had been enough to drive several other pedestrians to take a picture of me so I guess I can't fault her too much.

"Of course, you have a name you want me to address it to?" I took her offered pin and notepad, and started to write Blitz across the center of the page.

"If you would just put 'for Lisa' that would be wonderful." I nodded as I wrote it out, taking the time to add a little heart at the end.

The Girl took the notepad back from me with a smile, taking only a quick glance at what I'd written in the page before she tucked it back in her purse.

"Perfect, I'll get it framed." Something about this whole girl's attitude seemed a bit… out on, but I simply shrugged my shoulders and told her to have a good day as she slowly walked off. Her ass certainly looked good in that short pink skirt, her strut almost certainly intentionally accenting her rear for my viewing pleasure. Maybe having some fans would be nice, especially if all of them were that good looking.

Vista was several minutes late by the time I finally caught sight of her, the green armor and skirt clad heroine making her way towards me at a light jog. What few people that were still out and about this late in the day easily made way for my soon to be companion, who finally reached my side with an embarrassed smile on her face.

"I'm so so sorry I made you wait, there was paperwork and I had to talk to…."

"Vista, it's alright, I'm not mad because I had to wait a few minutes, sometimes things happen."

I cut her rapid string of apology's off before they can get any more hurried or distressed, lightly placing my hand on her shoulder in reassurance while I do so. She freezes up at my touch, and a light blush dusts her cheeks as her head turns to gaze at my hand.

I retract it soon after, thinking I may have slightly overstepped but she makes no mention of it, instead smiling happily her earlier panic now gone. We share a now calm greeting before I hand her the small white bag I had been holding up to now, her helmeted face only doing a little to disguise her surprise as receiving it.

"For me?" Her tone was a bit incredulous, as if the idea of me giving her a gift was hard to believe.

"It's just a little something I picked up as a thank you for taking the time out of your day to teach me." As I talked she dug around inside the sack, soon uncovering under a layer of tissue paper packing a row of chocolate truffles.

"Thank you so much." It seemed that was all she could manage as her face blushed anew as she repacked the bag, stowing the chocolates back away.

"It's no problem, you can also consider it a thank you for all the help you've given the city." That got her to smile even wider, before her blush got even more scarlet as she gave me a quick hug, telling me to wait so she could put the chocolates somewhere safe.

There wasn't really much going on so far, the most action me and Vista had encountered so far on our patrol was her signing an autograph of her own. Not that the evening wasn't pleasant, far from that in fact. As we walked we chatted, telling each other small factoids about ourselves.

Her favorite color was green, her birthday was on the 15th of may, she preferred cats to dogs but still liked them both, it was little things like that that we ended up sharing. That's the whole problem with secret identities, it definitely hampers small talk.

When I told her I was 19 I could tell she was disappointed, probably having hoped I would join the wards.

The sky was almost entirely dark when the first sign of trouble arose, It was a smell I was becoming decently aware of due to the last few days' events, it was the scent of blood. We had just passed through a more run down section of boardwalk, one which bordered the docks but didn't quite enter it.

The smell had been subtle at first, to the point where I didn't recognize it, but as we had gotten closer to its source it had only gotten stronger, until we finally found where it was coming from. It was a tight alleyway, maybe just wide enough for a small car to pass through, but with the amount of trash you would be lucky to get a bike down it.

At the far end was a brick wall, creating a dead-end which made what we found there make a gruesome amount of sense. There were three of them, clothed in rags and not much else, three male bodies laid out on the ground, dried blood splashed up the nearby wall from where one of the corpses has been partially bisected, guts and viscera strewn about the most damaged corpse.

Vista had frozen in place as we came within sight of the bodies, hand over her mouth as she viewed the grizzly scene. I, while also being admittedly a fair bit surprised and disgusted, still moved closer to examine the scene.

Looking close it was obvious that these men died here, the way the bodies were strewn about showing their last moments, the less damaged bodies showing large cuts on their backs, obviously having tried to run after witnessing the way their companion had died. What was maybe more startling than the viciousness of the scene was the lack of blood, sure, there was plenty pooled around where the most damaged body had fallen, but the other two had none, not a single drop had touched the ground, their clothing having barely been bled through even though they both had Nearly foot long gashes spanning their backs.

I looked closer yet, the strangeness of it all easily peaking my interest.

I could hear vista getting on the phone behind me, obviously calling the murder scene in, even as I continued my own private investigation.

Both the less damaged bodies bore a set of small puncture wounds on their necks, maybe an inch apart at most. I wouldn't have even noticed if it wasn't for the discoloration of the skin around the puncture area.

This was obviously a cape killing, that much was obvious from the first look, no normal killing involved a victim being nearly split in half. But outside of that I honestly didn't have a fucking clue what was going on.

A sigh left me as I made my way back to Vista's side, our earlier jovial mood ruined by the scene that was laid out before us, nothing ever could be normal, could it?

Date: April 26, 2011

Finally walking home, having changed out of my cape outfit at the usual abandoned building I used, I found myself annoyed. My thoughts had been elsewhere since I started on my journey home, mostly picking apart the mess me and Vista had happened upon. It hadn't been the pleasant evening I had hoped it would be, that was for sure.

Soon after Vista had called our honestly disturbing find in the Prt had arrived, and soon after securing the area, started asking pointed questions about my involvement with the crime scene and Vista. An agent who identified himself simply as 'Agent Henry' did my debriefing, though I'd probably class it as more of an interrogation. Why was I on a patrol with Vista, Why haven't I gone in for power testing yet, Why did I know Vista, it was honestly a string of questions that I hadn't felt particularly obligated to answer, much to agent Henry's blatant chagrin.

Eventually Vista had come to my rescue, her having finished her own debriefing long before my own. It was probably only because she was there to soften the brunt of the agents' now obvious vendetta against unaligned capes that I didn't get taken back to Prt headquarters for further questioning. I was definitely thankful to be spared the annoyance, which I had made sure to express to Vista before I departed, though she had simply smiled at me and told me not to worry about it overly much, saying it was the least she could do for a fellow cape.

That was where we went our separate ways, her having to go report in to a supervisor, which was just one of the many reasons that I seemed to have more and more of for why I didn't ever want to join the Prt.

Overall I was decidedly unhappy about the whole affair, not only was my patrol with Vista ruined, but from what shes told me before she left we would probably have to take a break from patrolling together for the next couple days if only to make sure the PRT did not pay anymore attention to me than they already probably did.

It was as I got close to my street that I felt it, there was something wrong, though what I didn't know. I slowly turned my head as I took in my surroundings in greater detail, looking for what was causing the ever so slight feeling of unease that was creeping its way up my back.

I saw nothing out of the ordinary, the road's many streetlights making most of it visible for my quick once over. The feeling seemed to nearly go away as I shook some sense into myself and continued my walk back. Making my way to my apartment building and making my way inside I idly scratched my arm, the small goosebumps I felt there giving me pause.

I never got goosebumps.

Pressing the elevator button I forced myself not to turn around, not to look over my shoulder as I waited for it in silence. It felt like an eternity after that the doors finally opened, and as I stepped through I did my best to act casual, to purposely act as if I was actually paying attention to the panel of buttons in front of me. When I slowly reached for my floor's button I slowed the world, using my speed to look out through the still open elevator doors to the world beyond.

While it was harder to see out into the relative darkness of the city's streets from my building's well lit lobby, it wasn't impossible, and I saw what I was searching for.

Directly across the street in the deep recesses of shadow stood a figure, I wouldn't have seen them at all if it wasn't for the wight colored material they wore, the color difference helping to break up their shape from the shadows they hid in and allowing my eyes to pick out the figure.

They weren't tall, they weren't that large in any other way either but that was all I could make out before I blinked and the figure was gone.

I finished pressing the button to my floor with a deep frown, never taking my eye off the street outside as the doors finally closed in front of me, my mind running at a mile a minute as I came to terms with what I had just seen. Something knew where I lived.
