Chapter 15
Taylor felt her heartbeat as hard as possible, this being her first patrol she while she had been hoping for some excitement, she didn't expect fucking Hookwolf! She didn't even realize she had wandered into E88 territory or that this was one of Hookwolf's dog fighting rings! The murderous parahuman came into view and glared at her. What's worse is that she didn't even have a cape name yet!
"Get down rabbit girl, or I will fucking end you" he said, apparently, she strayed too close to a haunt of his… or he's just being an asshole in general.
Taylor wouldn't deny she was worried, but it didn't show (actually if not for that weird VR thing Taylor wasn't sure if she would've been able to hide her nerves), and in fact her mind went to a little tidbit of knowledge that Fran had given her. The fact that it was right after her first testing her transformative abilities. She couldn't really call it Changer technically, but she supposed the term was interchangeable in her case.
In a battle of Changers one element people rarely consider is the transformation time, Lung could easily destroy Hookwolf after a few minutes, but Lung would be nothing but a ragdoll for Hookwolf until then, and even then Hookwolf would be faster unless Lung grew wings, and he knew to not push Lung to that point. It took many fights between the two for Hookwolf to figure it out, but he did, and tried to keep things from escalating to that point.
In an escalation game, Lung always won. And accidents still happen.
What was different in this case was her own transformation, she easily rated it possibly the highest in the Bay and perhaps even New England due to the near instantaneous nature! She could jump from a roof and land in her Hybrid transformation. In that form, she could run fast enough to be considered a speedster. She could run from the city corner, punch someone in the middle of the block, and turn the next corner before the guy could even hit the ground. What made it more effective was that she still maintained her weight, in fact she put on a few pounds of muscle with her initial transformation, never mind her Hybrid transformation!
While Hookwolf in comparison could easily outsize a polar bear in size in roughly two minutes (thanks PHO warriors for being so anal-retentive to actually figure that out) and far less time than for weight due to the metal. But that meant that Taylor could deliver a massive spike of damage against the dangerous parahuman with impunity and follow it up with hit-and-run tactics for almost a full minute.
And a minute was a long time for a speedster, even one that isn't nearly as fast as Velocity.
Taylor wasn't even transformed beyond her initial transformation when she started running, she was in her rather toned and fit 'base' form with only rabbit ears replacing her human ones. Hookwolf raised his shoulders and ran towards her in response, clearly confident in his ability to tackle a rail-thin (in comparison to him) teenager as a 6-foot-tall man covered in muscles.
Just before they collided, Taylor jumped and transformed into her Hybrid state, her forearms and legs entirely changing near instantaneously. To Hookwolf's credit he was experienced enough to change immediately upon seeing another person transforming, but she was faster and changed immediately, but it was too late for him.
Her transformation started at the very beginning of the jump, she spun her body and pulled her legs in, changing one's own weight was rarely spoken of in civilian circles and even parahuman circles outside of Changers themselves, but it was one of the largest advantages Changer/Brutes had over pure Brutes.
Her legs now fully Digitigrade expanded outward into his changing chest faster than even her eyesight could catch, the impact was incredibly loud, like the impact of punches you hear in cartoons but loud enough to reverberate through the entire warehouse.
The recoil of the blow immediately sent her flying dozens of feet back, and she had to stumble back a few times until she could regain her footing, only then did she look to see what happened to Hookwolf.
She grimaced at the sight and made a mental note to not attempt that maneuver on anyone that didn't have some sort of Brute or otherwise defensive power.
Hookwolf had hit a pile of bricks that was beside the warehouse wall, his head was hanging in front of his chest, and his neck had several thick cuts to it, like the skin had been pulled apart, his dirty blond hair hanging down from it, but still not omitting the two purple craters embedded in his chest, and both of his legs were bent forward, both knees clearly broken and bleeding.
Taylor didn't wait to see if he was still alive and remembered her, she simply ran away as fast as a car.
Danny honestly wasn't much for cape culture, despite it being what the Bay was known for, that had been a thing his late wife had always told him not to get involved with, but he still kept an ear to the ground, he had to go to more than one funeral because of Villain damage, so he still remembered when saying villain insurance sounded stupid, it still did for him (but not nearly as stupid as it used to), but people took it as a fact of life.
He sighed as he looked at the work, he was actually supposed to be the leader of the Dockworkers Union, but the last union leader had died back in 06, and no one replaced him since. So instead of actually assigning a proper replacement they had an interregnum manager, him, to pick up the slack. Mostly because he was pretty bad a politics (he's gotten better at it over the years, but it'd never really be something he was comfortable with), don't get him wrong he isn't bad at talking to people, but setting up campaigns with posters, promises, donors, and getting votes was just not the sort of stuff he could do.
Effectively anyway, he may have grown up on the Docks, but he's an honest man. Plus, he was, still is really, a terrible liar.
Besides, it's not like his getting the position meant anything, he already had turned down several opportunities to give himself a raise because the union could, so it doesn't really matter that he is still in the position of head of hiring
"Um, Danny, I think you should look at this" his secretary dropped on the table, he just put in his glasses and started reading.
He then stopped and looked at her.
"Oh yeah, I had that reaction too." She said, completing his thoughts before he could even voice them.
"Capes…" He thought tiredly before he gave the file another look over.
Fixing the old hospital had been a job that had been shot down several times before, but it was standard procedure to never intrude upon a villain's old lair, there wasn't any law that said you couldn't own a villain hideout except for Tinker labs, but the PRT didn't really care if a house was filled with common stuff like formaldehyde or black mold, only paranormal stuff, and didn't clean stuff after raids and the Tinker cleanup, and they had a nasty habit of busting open every door, window, fridge, and air filters and then not fix it later.
Really the problem with the villain lairs is who lives in them, if the villain views it as disposable the place is a dump that received no maintenance ever, if it's well cared for it means the old resident might come back, with almost nothing in between.
Both were very, very bad for anyone living there and so a villain lair dropped in price even more than a meth lab, he knows this because he received far more people buying meth labs than villain lairs.
The hospital (that was actually a clinic if he remembered something about the last time this was proposed), was bought by the new healer cape Dr. Patches, the idiot had told the internet that he was interested in buying the place, you never say out loud you're interested, it makes people raise the price. But surprisingly, in this case it didn't happen.
The recent debacle of the hospital being used as a human trafficking stigmatized the place even more, with the sheer damage the building must have taken it was actually going by a quarter of the actual value, it was the only explanation as to why there wasn't a massive bidding war trying to sell to Patches. Hell, a lot of developers would buy just so that they could claim they sold to a hero.
It really wasn't a good sign for whatever condition the hospital was in, though the price was even lower than he would expect.
Sighing, Danny put on a show of debating if this was even worth doing, but he already knew what he'd do. As did his secretary or any other worker in the union. Rubbing his face, at least he knew Taylor wouldn't mind. Her friend liked spending time with Taylor, Aisha if he recalled correctly.
He was pretty sure she talked about her boyfriend to Taylor before, but honestly Danny was exhausted when he overheard it, so he wasn't really paying attention. More focused on eating dinner.
"I'm going to have to work late, can you call Taylor and tell her I'm working late? Actually, get her favorite pizza, I'm paying." He said getting up and putting the rest of the work on the other desk, and started to look at the file cabinets for the old soil study for the hospital, "Oh and can you get the coffee started? This is going to be a long night." He added absentmindedly.
"That one place that sells beef broccoli pies from downtown, right?" She asked him with a smile as she went over to an old coffee pot and started getting it going.
"Yeah, she learned to like those, the owner also has a Chinese restaurant right beside it and used leftovers for himself, I think that's how chicken and waffles were created too." He said, knocking back his cold cup of coffee.
Brad woke up on a hard metal table, not the first time and certainly not the last time. The first thing he felt was pain and Othala at his side, which really was a first, it was all that he was as the light burned his crust-covered eyes, he ripped the tube going to his gullet and started coughing.
Groaning he tried to push himself into a sitting position but failed, causing him to growl, "I'm going to fucking murder that rabbit bitch!" He could respect her for not running away from him, even knocking him for a loop, but that wouldn't stop him from killing her for this!
Glancing over, he saw Victor simply typing on a computer, probably updating Kaiser or some shit. He honestly never liked the guy, effective as he is, Brad only saw him as a leech. He stole the skills from others to use them for himself, he didn't sweat and bleed for any of the skills he stole.
Victor simply turned from the computer in a swivel chair, and started to rattle of the little concise speeches he often did, "It's been five hours since found you in the warehouse you had a broken neck, two extremely severe lung punctures and the rest was filled with blood, your heart had similar catastrophic damage, with two ruptures of arteries and compromised valves, likely due to the pressure from whatever hit you, this combines with the bleeding in the legs meant your body lost blood at the same rate it regenerated, and since it prioritized your blood it let you in a vulnerable state, we brought Othala into the scene and transferred you when your spine was stable." The fucker then turned around and continued working in the computer as if there was no more discussion.
He hated this fucker, he always put the fucking fake smiles around everyone but Brad, whom he would just rattle on info like the fucking autist that all thinkers were and keep the conversation to the fucking bones. Not that he cared, the man was less annoying to deal with like this and Brad knew he did that intentionally, which also annoyed him.
"Fucking girl, changer of some sort, dropkick me, you know how long I've wanted to use a dropkick? Fucking forever! Now it's ruined." It was petty of him, but Brad honestly didn't give a shit at the moment.
"Stop squirming you're still not healed," said Othala "Honestly you shouldn't be taking this long with me helping out."
"Little bitch turned instantly, crushed my real lungs before I could transform, don't heal as fast outside the metal."
"You shouldn't have healed at all, that would have been complete dead for anyone else in the Empire except Krieg" the man said, not even bothering to turn to face him.
Brad just growled before he tried to relax, though already he was dreaming about getting even with that rabbit cunt! He's going to cut her goddamn feet off and keep them as lucky charms!
