Chapter 8: Unconscious
My head spun and my vision darkened. My knees grew weak, and I began to lose consciousness. Before I knew it, I was already falling, but he didn't let me hit the ground. He immediately caught me, then carried me to the table and placed me in a chair.
"Wake up," he said, snapping his fingers in my face as he tried to rouse me.
"Are you okay, Amera?" Ruby asked worriedly, coming over to me, but I couldn't utter a word.
"Snap out of it," the familiar voice groaned, but it was too difficult to obey.
"Who are you? Are you Peter?" Ruby turned to the stranger.
"Peter?" I heard the stranger repeat.
"Yes, Peter," Ruby answered.
"He's my brother. I'm Paul."
Oh, no... It's not even Peter; it's Paul. The brother. I knew he looked familiar. I need to get out of here. I need to regain my senses.
I think he drugged the wine. I need to wake up before he does something to me. I don't think Ruby understands the situation either.
"Where's Peter, then? I've been waiting. Are you his twin brother?" Ruby asked, but instead of responding, he seemed more concerned about me.
"Wake your pretty friend up."
"Where's Peter? He's late," Ruby pressed.
"Girl, Peter is not coming. I'm the only one here. I'm here to see your pretty friend. You can be on your way now. You're not needed."
"I'll leave with her then." Ruby tried to lift me, but Paul aggressively pushed her. Ruby fell against her chair; the chair couldn't hold her weight, and she collapsed with it.
After she got to her feet, she began to understand the situation. She saw that there was trouble.
"Leave, don't just stand there," Paul ordered, his gaze still fixed on me.
"I'm not going anywhere without her. I don't know who you are or what you want, but I won't leave this place without my friend." Ruby came to me again and tried to lift me, but Paul didn't let her.
He grabbed her wrist, pinned her hands behind her back, and then dragged her out of the restaurant.
Seeing how distracted he was, I reached into my bag and quickly found a straight razor. If I want to get sober, I must do this. I have to cut myself with the razor.
The brothers taught me this, but I've never actually done it before.
After bracing myself, I reached for my left wrist and gave myself a sharp cut. Once I did, my blood began to flow, and my vision started to clear.
Yes, it's working.
With renewed strength, I stood up and began staggering to the door, ignoring the trail of blood I left behind.
My phone hasn't stopped vibrating. The brothers haven't stopped texting and calling, and I'm sure they're worried. I'm also concerned. But I can't answer the phone right now; I need to escape.
I reached the door and immediately walked out, but the loud sound it made caught Paul's attention.
Paul instantly broke free from Ruby, who had her grip around him, and came toward me.
"Where do you think you're going?" He grabbed me by the neck and started to choke me.
"Leave her alone!" Ruby jumped onto his back. She's quite feisty, but Paul easily took her down with one arm.
"I don't want to kill you; you were just bait. Leave before I change my mind," Paul growled, he began to drag me back into the restaurant, but I refused to go with him.
Ruby jumped on him again, and this greatly annoyed him.
He freed me for a moment, and in that moment, he dealt with Ruby. He lifted her into the air and slammed her hard against the restaurant wall. Ruby lost consciousness before hitting the ground.
After dealing with Ruby, he turned his attention back to me, but I was no longer within his reach. I was already inside the restaurant and had locked the door to prevent his entrance.
I can't escape without Ruby. I also can't save us both. I'll have to call for help.
With shaky hands, I took out my phone and saw it ringing. Parker was on the line.
I swiped the icon and quickly put the phone to my ear.
"Are you safe?" Parker's calm voice came through.
"No, I am not; we need help," I breathed. "It's Paul; he has hurt Ruby. I'm fine right now, but he'll hurt me too."
"Explain the situation."
"I'm inside the restaurant, and he's trying to break in. He's breaking the glass door; he'll be in any minute now," I explained.
"Good job. Remain calm and stay hidden for three more minutes. Just three minutes," he advised.
"Okay, I'm waiting," I responded before returning the phone to my bag.
Just as Parker said, two of his men appeared at the restaurant within a few minutes. They charged at Paul and soon took him down.
Once they'd subdued him, I unlocked the door and rushed to Ruby. Ruby was still unconscious, but she didn't look badly hurt.
Thank the moon goddess! I was scared.
"Ms. Amera," one of the men said as he came to me. He took out a handkerchief and tied it over my cut.
"We'll take you to the hospital. Come." They took Ruby and me to the car.
On our way to the hospital, Ruby kept twisting and turning, and I kept assuring her that everything would be fine.
"You'll be okay, you'll be fine," I kept telling her.
We reached the hospital, and the doctors rushed to us. They put us on trolleys and hurried us to the emergency ward.
"Doctor, will my friend be fine? She's in pain. You should treat her," I muttered to my attending doctor, but the doctor gave me a look I didn't understand.
Soon an alarm went off in the ward. "Code blue! Code blue!! Code blue!!!"
Ruby. Ruby is in danger. I tried to sit up in my bed, but they wouldn't let me.
R... Ruby... My friend.
I thought her injuries weren't too life-threatening. I thought she... I thought...
"Doctor, she has lost too much blood. Her blood pressure is dropping and her pulse is weak; the situation is not looking promising," I heard a female nurse yell.
"Administer fluids and prepare for transfusion," the doctor's voice ordered.
"Her blood pressure is still dropping!"
"Increase IV fluids and continue to monitor her vital signs," the doctor said again.
"Also, prepare an OR. We might need to operate." The doctors and nurses kept moving in different directions, and before I knew it, my vision started to darken again.
"Ms. Amera? You need to stay with us! Stay with us! You need to wake up!" the doctor called, but I was too sleepy.
I couldn't keep my eyes open and soon fell asleep.
