Chapter 36: 36. The Guardian’s Oath
The air grew heavier, thick with the weight of an unseen force. The Guardian's towering form flickered, the silver flames in its eyes dimming before flaring back to life.
Ling Tian remained still, his gaze locked onto the being before him. Though its voice had spoken of warning, there was no hostility—only a deep, ancient sorrow.
Xu Qing'er took a step closer, her golden eyes shimmering with a cryptic light. "This Guardian… it doesn't want to fight."
The Guardian's shifting form wavered. "Fated One… your presence awakens echoes of an oath long buried. You are not yet ready, but the path has already begun."
Ling Tian narrowed his eyes. "Who made this oath?"
The Guardian's voice was like rolling thunder, yet tinged with something akin to lament. "The one who bore your fate before you."
A chill ran down Ling Tian's spine. The one before him? Had someone walked this path in ages past?
Before he could speak, the altar behind him pulsed with an eerie glow. The intricate carvings began to shift, rearranging themselves into an unfamiliar pattern. The Guardian's silver flames flickered wildly, as if reacting to something beyond its control.
Xu Qing'er tensed. "Something is breaking through."
The ground trembled. Then, from the depths of the ruined temple, a rift tore open—a swirling vortex of abyssal darkness and golden light. From within, an unseen force surged outward, raw and untamed.
The Guardian let out a low, guttural sound, stepping back. "It awakens... The echoes of what was lost."
Ling Tian's aura flared instinctively, his azure-gold energy forming a barrier around him and Xu Qing'er. The force within the rift was overwhelming, but what unsettled him most was the sensation it carried—a familiar yet distant presence, as if calling to him.
Then, a voice—distorted and ancient—whispered from the void.
"You were not meant to return… yet you defy the flow of fate once more."
Ling Tian's heart pounded. "Who are you?"
The voice chuckled—a sound devoid of warmth. "A question you have asked in countless lifetimes."
Xu Qing'er's breath hitched. She turned to Ling Tian, her expression unreadable. "This… might be the answer you've been searching for."
The rift trembled violently, and from its depths, something began to take form. A figure—clad in fractured light and swirling shadows—emerged, its features blurred, yet undeniably resembling Ling Tian himself.
The Guardian lowered its gaze. "The cycle continues… but will you break it?"
Ling Tian clenched his fists. The truth was within reach.
And this time, he would not let it slip away.
