Chapter 28: The Final Gambit
Chapter 0028: The Final Gambit
Claire stepped into the grand hall of Sebastian's estate, her pulse hammering beneath her skin. The opulent chandeliers cast eerie shadows across the marble floor, and the air was thick with the scent of expensive cologne and danger.
Sebastian stood at the far end, leaning casually against a polished mahogany desk, a knowing smirk curving his lips. "Claire," he drawled, his voice smooth as silk. "I knew you'd come."
She took a steadying breath, forcing herself to meet his gaze without flinching. "You didn't give me much of a choice, did you?"
Sebastian chuckled, pushing off the desk and strolling toward her. "You always have a choice, my dear. You just keep making the wrong ones."
Claire clenched her fists. "Where is Mark?"
Sebastian tsked, circling her like a predator sizing up its prey. "Ah, so that's what this is about? And here I thought you came for me."
Her patience was razor-thin. "Where. Is. He?"
Sebastian sighed, gesturing toward a side door. "Locked away safely, of course. But you and I both know you're not here just for him. You're here because of Alexander."
Claire's body tensed at the mention of his name. "This has nothing to do with him."
Sebastian smirked, tilting his head. "Liar."
Before she could react, the doors burst open.
Alexander.
Dressed in black, his eyes burning with fury, he strode in with his gun raised. "Let her go, Sebastian."
Sebastian merely chuckled, unbothered by the threat. "Always so dramatic, Alexander." He raised a hand, and from the shadows, his men emerged—guns drawn, surrounding them.
Claire's stomach clenched. They were trapped.
Alexander's voice was low, dangerous. "Let's end this."
Sebastian grinned. "With pleasure."
And then, all hell broke loose.
The Final Showdown
A single heartbeat passed in silence. Then—chaos.
Gunfire erupted as Alexander dived forward, his instincts sharper than ever. He tackled Claire to the ground as bullets whizzed past them, shattering glass and ricocheting off the marble columns.
Sebastian's men fanned out, their weapons blazing. But Alexander was faster. He rolled, took cover behind an overturned table, and fired back. Lucas burst through the doors, his own gun raised, mowing down two of Sebastian's guards before ducking behind a pillar.
"Claire, stay down!" Alexander barked.
But she was already moving. Her hands trembled, but her focus was unshaken as she grabbed a fallen gun from one of the guards. She had come too far to be a bystander now.
Sebastian remained standing at the far end of the hall, untouched, his smirk unwavering. "You think you can win this?" he taunted over the gunfire. "This is my world, Alexander. You're just playing in it."
Alexander growled, reloading his gun. "Then let's burn it down."
He fired—once, twice—aiming for Sebastian's leg. But Sebastian was quicker than expected, sidestepping the bullets as if he had anticipated every move.
"You should know by now," Sebastian sneered. "I always stay one step ahead."
Then, with the flick of his wrist, he pulled out a small device.
A detonator.
Claire's blood ran cold.
"No!" she screamed, just as Sebastian pressed the button.
The floor beneath them trembled as an explosion rocked the estate. Dust and smoke filled the air, the ceiling cracking, debris raining down like a deadly storm. The entire building groaned, its foundation shaking.
"We need to get out of here!" Lucas shouted.
Claire coughed, her vision blurred by smoke. Through the haze, she saw Sebastian slipping through a hidden doorway.
"He's getting away!" she cried.
Alexander grabbed her wrist. "We're not done yet."
With Lucas covering them, they chased after Sebastian, darting through the crumbling corridors. Every step was a battle against time—the entire estate was moments away from collapse.
They burst through a metal door, leading them to a dimly lit underground passage. Sebastian was just ahead, his steps quick, but desperation had crept into his movements.
Claire raised her gun. "Stop!"
Sebastian turned, his eyes gleaming with something dark.
"You don't have the guts, Claire."
Her grip tightened. She didn't hesitate.
A single shot rang out.
Sebastian staggered, clutching his shoulder. Blood bloomed across his suit.
Alexander seized the moment, rushing forward and pinning Sebastian against the wall. "It's over," he growled.
Sebastian's lips curled in a bloody smirk. "You think this ends with me?" he rasped. "You'll never escape the game, Alexander."
Alexander's jaw clenched. "Watch me."
With one final punch, Sebastian slumped to the ground, unconscious.
The building groaned above them. Time was up.
"Let's go!" Lucas yelled.
They sprinted down the passage, dragging Sebastian with them. Just as they emerged into the cold night air, the estate behind them erupted in flames, the explosion lighting up the sky like a dying star.
Claire collapsed onto the grass, her chest heaving.
It was over.
Sebastian was finally defeated.
She turned to Alexander, their eyes locking in the flickering firelight.
"We did it," she breathed.
Alexander exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah."
But even as he pulled her close, a thought lingered in his mind.
Was this truly the end?
Or just the beginning of something far more dangerous?
Aftermath of Fire and Blood
The flames from Sebastian's estate still licked the sky as emergency sirens wailed in the distance. The night air was thick with smoke, the acrid scent of burning wood and metal filling Claire's lungs as she struggled to catch her breath.
Lucas knelt a few feet away, binding Sebastian's unconscious body with thick restraints. "We got him," he muttered, wiping a streak of blood from his forehead. "But something doesn't feel right."
Alexander stood next to Claire, his gaze locked on the smoldering ruins. His jaw was tight, his expression unreadable. "It was too easy," he admitted. "Sebastian always had contingencies."
Claire frowned, her heartbeat still erratic. "You think he planned for this?"
Lucas let out a sharp breath. "I think this was exactly what he wanted."
At that moment, Sebastian stirred, a groan escaping his lips. Blood dripped from his split lip, and his suit was charred at the edges, but that insufferable smirk was still there.
"You look surprised," he rasped, tilting his head toward Alexander. "Did you really think I wouldn't prepare for this?"
Alexander grabbed him by the collar, forcing him upright. "What did you do?"
Sebastian's laughter was hoarse, but it sent a chill down Claire's spine. "You should be asking what's coming next."
A cold weight settled in Claire's stomach.
Lucas stepped closer. "Spit it out, or I swear—"
Sebastian chuckled, but this time, there was something different in his eyes—resignation? Triumph?
Then his lips moved, whispering something only Alexander could hear.
Alexander's face darkened. His grip tightened for just a second before he released Sebastian with a forceful shove. "You're lying."
Sebastian exhaled, the smirk fading. "You know I'm not."
Claire's fingers dug into her palms. "Alexander? What did he say?"
Alexander hesitated, his expression clouded with something she couldn't quite decipher. Then, in a low voice, he said, "Sebastian wasn't the one pulling the strings."
The words sent a shiver down Claire's spine.
"What do you mean?" Lucas asked, his voice sharper now.
Sebastian let out another weak chuckle. "You thought I was the endgame?" He shook his head. "I was just the distraction."
A tense silence fell between them.
Claire's breath caught. "Then who—"
A sudden explosion in the distance cut her off. It was far, but powerful, the shockwave rippling through the air. The flames that had once belonged to Sebastian's estate were nothing compared to the fireball now lighting up the horizon.
Lucas cursed under his breath. "What the hell was that?"
Sebastian coughed, smirking despite the blood on his lips. "The real game has just begun."
Alexander's fists clenched. "Damn it."
Claire felt the weight of the moment settle on her shoulders.
Sebastian had been their target for so long. But now, as she watched the new flames rise in the distance, she realized—
This wasn't the end.
It was just the beginning.
The Puppet Master Revealed
The echoes of the explosion still rang in Claire's ears as she stood frozen, watching the inferno in the distance. Her heart pounded in her chest like a war drum. If Sebastian wasn't the one in control of everything… then who was?
Alexander's grip tightened around the gun in his hand. His jaw was set, his eyes dark and unreadable. He turned back to Sebastian, grabbing him by the collar once more. "Who are you working for?" His voice was sharp, deadly.
Sebastian smirked despite the bruises blooming on his face. "You already know the answer," he rasped.
Lucas stepped forward, his patience wearing thin. "Cut the cryptic act, Sebastian. Who's behind all of this?"
Sebastian chuckled, shaking his head. "I told you. I was never the true mastermind. I was just a distraction."
Claire's pulse quickened. "Then who?" she demanded.
Sebastian's smirk deepened. "You'll find out soon enough."
A sharp pain exploded across his face as Alexander punched him, sending him sprawling onto the dirt. "You don't get to play games anymore," Alexander growled. "You tell us now, or you don't walk away from this."
Sebastian spat out a mouthful of blood, looking up at him with amusement. "You don't scare me, Alex. You never have."
Lucas exhaled, shaking his head. "He's not going to talk."
Claire clenched her fists. "Then we figure it out ourselves."
Before Alexander could respond, Claire's phone buzzed in her pocket. The sound was deafening in the tense silence. She pulled it out, glancing at the unknown number flashing across the screen.
She hesitated. Then, with a deep breath, she answered.
"Hello, Claire."
The voice was smooth, controlled, and hauntingly familiar.
Her breath caught in her throat. "Who is this?"
A soft chuckle came from the other end. "I've been watching you for a long time."
Claire's grip tightened around the phone. "If you've got something to say, say it."
The voice remained eerily calm. "Sebastian was just a tool. A pawn in my game. But you… you're something more."
A shiver ran down her spine. "What do you want?"
A pause. Then—
"I want to see you."
The line went dead.
Claire stared at her phone, her blood running cold.
Alexander stepped closer. "Who was it?"
Claire met his gaze. "I don't know. But they know me."
Lucas let out a frustrated breath. "This just keeps getting worse."
Sebastian chuckled from where he lay on the ground. "I told you," he muttered. "You have no idea what you're up against."
Claire exhaled sharply. Whoever was behind this—whoever had been pulling the strings from the shadows—was finally making their move.
And she wasn't sure if they were ready.
