Chapter 167: Chapter 167: Retreating to Advance

Lin Yun had originally thought that breaking through the enemy lines was just a matter of time. The Crimson Ghost Sect's defenses were, in the end, fragile. As long as he found an opportunity, he could definitely break out. He never expected to be blocked by Zhao Teng at the critical moment.

The main reason the situation had devolved this way, however, was that An Shenyu's group had failed to organize an effective counter-attack. Despite An Shenyu's previous boasts about how he would surely defeat the Crimson Ghost Sect, when it came time to actually fight, with his meager abilities, defeating such a powerful foe was nothing but a daydream.

That was why, in the midst of battle, the moment he saw the tide turn against them, that man had simply fled.

But he would pay the price for his recklessness.

After hearing the conversation between Lin Yun and An Shenyu, and considering everything that had happened before, Zhao Teng had long since lost all patience with An Shenyu. A person who could so easily betray his own sect would just as quickly betray them. Keeping such a person around would only hinder the Crimson Ghost Sect's future plans.

Seeing that An Shenyu had no way to regroup with Lin Yun's people, Zhao Teng roared with laughter.

"I always thought of myself as a bad egg," he mocked, "but I never expected a kid like you to be even worse than me! As I thought, you cultivators from the so-called righteous sects are all just a bunch of hypocrites. You talk all day about benevolence and morality, but when your own interests are on the line, you have even less of a bottom line than anyone else."

As he laughed, he clenched his left fist. He threw a punch across the air.

Like a cannonball, a terrifying wave of Yuan Qi shot through the sky. An Shenyu had to exert a great deal of effort just to dodge the blow. When he looked back at Zhao Teng, his expression was incredibly grave. This man was truly even stronger than he had imagined.

"Senior, why must you be like this? Wouldn't it be better for us to cooperate?"

Zhao Teng scoffed. "Leaving aside the fact that you have no value for me to use, even if you did, why would I trust someone who could betray me at any moment?"

He had no intention of wasting any more words on the man before him.

While Zhao Teng was dealing with An Shenyu, Lin Yun had already regrouped with the main force. At that moment, the disciples who had previously opposed him now lowered their heads in shame. The louder they had been before, the more humiliated they felt now. They had naively believed An Shenyu could lead them to victory against the Crimson Ghost Sect. They had actually thought the Crimson Ghost Sect had no real experts in command.

Everything that had just happened was enough to prove how foolish and naive their thinking had been.

"Senior Brother Lin, we are truly sorry for before. Some of the things we said were too harsh."

"That's right! We were all led astray by that bastard An Shenyu. That's why we were talking such nonsense."

Several of them whispered their apologies. Some even looked at the distant An Shenyu with utter contempt.

"You don't need to worry. The fact that I stayed behind means I also couldn't leave this place. Since that's the case, my only choice now is to fight alongside you all against the Crimson Ghost Sect."

Lin Yun knew perfectly well about their selfish little schemes. Although he was annoyed with them, he had to admit that for now, he still needed to make use of their numbers.

Following Lin Yun's instructions, the group quickly sprang into action. The Crimson Ghost Sect was powerful; Zhao Teng alone was worth a thousand troops. Dealing with such an expert would be incredibly difficult for Lin Yun. However, he was not a single pillar trying to support a falling sky.

"We are surrounded by the Crimson Ghost Sect. It's too late to escape now," he announced. "But I have already sent Senior Brother Zhou to get reinforcements. Therefore, all we need to do is delay for as long as possible. I ask everyone to conserve some of your strength."

Under Lin Yun's arrangement, the remaining cultivators began to spontaneously form defensive arrays. Their individual strength was indeed not great, but if they formed a defensive line, they could effectively leverage their advantages.

As they began to use the power of these formations to deal with the enemy, the pressure on them eased considerably.

"Why didn't we think of using formations at a critical moment before?"

"That's right! The Crimson Ghost Sect also used formations to surround us!"

"As expected of Senior Brother Lin! He found a solution so quickly!"

With the formations established, it would be nearly impossible for the Crimson Ghost Sect to break through their lines in a short amount of time. This caused the other disciples to swell with a bit of confidence.

Meanwhile, An Shenyu, knowing he couldn't escape from Zhao Teng, had resolved to take the man down with him. He refused to believe that if he could truly threaten Zhao Teng's life, the man would still be so determined to kill him. At this thought, An Shenyu fought with even greater ferocity.

But sometimes, what one imagines is easy, reality proves to be harsh. How could the current An Shenyu possibly be a match for Zhao Teng?

The battle didn't last long. Just as An Shenyu thought his swordsmanship was enough to be evenly matched with Zhao Teng, his sword was snapped in two by Zhao Teng's bare hand.

What followed was a roar from Zhao Teng. A single punch landed on An Shenyu's chest.

A mouthful of blood sprayed out. An Shenyu, like a meteor falling from the sky, slammed heavily onto the ground. The upper half of his body was scorched black. He was now on his last breath.

"With this little skill, you still dream of challenging our Crimson Ghost Sect?" Zhao Teng sneered. "Even if your elders came here, they would have to apologize to us obediently. Yet you lot have some nerve."

Seeing An Shenyu collapsed on the ground, Zhao Teng spoke with cold mockery before turning his gaze toward Lin Yun's group. He frowned.

"You're the kid who defeated the White Corpse King?"

To be honest, he was surprised when he saw Lin Yun. He was just a boy at the Sky-Soaring Realm. No matter how hard he worked, could he really defeat Jiang Qingshuang, one of the Four Great Ghost Kings? After becoming famous, Jiang Qingshuang had defeated countless opponents. Yet now, she had lost to such an unknown boy. No one knew Lin Yun's background; he was a dark horse who had risen too quickly. The Crimson Ghost Sect had no records of him whatsoever.

At that moment, Lin Yun also stepped to the forefront. He looked at Zhao Teng.

Today's battle was now unavoidable. But who would be the final victor? Did that still need time to be decided?

"Your Excellency should understand," Lin Yun began, "on this matter, we will not back down. If you think the current Crimson Ghost Sect can kill us, why don't we just see about that?"

Lin Yun looked at Zhao Teng, then called up the man's panel. To win this now, this was the only way. After all, the panel always had a way of solving problems in unexpected ways.
