Chapter 165: Chapter 165: A Road to Ruin
At first, some had dared to challenge Lin Yun, but as the battle deepened, more and more disciples of the Crimson Ghost Sect came to a stark realization.
Lin Yun's strength was immense, far beyond what they could handle. Don't be fooled by his Sky-Soaring Realm cultivation; his wealth of combat experience and skill was not something an ordinary cultivator could possibly contend with.
Meanwhile, Xia Yijing and the others were also fighting with all their might to break through. There were indeed casualties in the process, but they could now truly see a glimmer of hope.
The situation on An Shenyu's front was慘烈 (cǎnliè - tragic/brutal). Even though they had many people, they were facing a force of Crimson Ghost Sect disciples that outnumbered them more than ten to one. What's more, the disciples in this force were powerful, far beyond what An Shenyu's followers could handle.
The big promises An Shenyu had made earlier were now impossible to deliver. The Crimson Ghost Sect disciples, whom he had described as being as easy to deal with as Chinese cabbage, were in reality anything but. Each and every one of them was a brave and skilled warrior, battle-hardened and bathed in blood. How could they be compared to the likes of An Shenyu's group, who had little to no real combat experience? The outcome of such a battle was predictable. Even if An Shenyu went all out, it was doubtful he could handle the situation.
"Senior Brother An, if this goes on, I'm afraid we're all going to die here!"
"There are too many of them! Maybe we should retreat!"
A few of An Shenyu's close followers whispered amongst themselves. If they continued to hold the line, they could indeed last a little longer, but no one could see a path to victory. If this continued, a disastrous defeat was inevitable.
An Shenyu himself was now hesitating. Leaving was simple, of course; he had plenty of ways to escape. But he needed to find a grandiose excuse for himself.
Facing the endless tide of Crimson Ghost Sect disciples surging towards them, the expressions on everyone's faces grew heavier and heavier.
"An Shenyu, you bastard!" someone finally shouted. "You were the one who said you'd lead us to crush the Crimson Ghost Sect! But look at us now! We're surrounded and completely helpless! If you're really so strong, you shouldn't be hiding in the back! You should be on the front lines!"
Many had now seen through An Shenyu's facade. The man talked a good game, but when it came time to actually fight, you absolutely could not count on him. Countless people had already died at the front, yet An Shenyu had yet to make a single move.
"What do you people understand? I am needed to command this entire battle!" he roared back. "If I go to the front, you'll all just scurry around like headless flies! Stop thinking so much and hold the line!"
An Shenyu knew the pressure was immense. Under his furious rebuke, the others勉励 (miǎnlì - encouraged themselves to) to hold on, but everyone knew they couldn't last much longer.
On the other side of the battlefield, although Lin Yun also faced many opponents, he cut them down with ease, carving a breakthrough in the enemy's front line.
"Look! Over at Lin Yun's side! They're about to break through!"
The people on the main battlefront saw that scene, and all of them were dumbfounded. They had all thought Lin Yun couldn't possibly succeed. But in the end, it was they who couldn't withstand the Crimson Ghost Sect's assault, while Lin Yun, with his own power, was leading his entire group out of the encirclement. They were now just one final step away from freedom.
"How is that possible?"
"He's only at the Sky-Soaring Realm! How can he do something like that?" a disciple from the Flowing Cloud Sect exclaimed in terror.
To have reached the Sky-Soaring Realm in such a short time was already terrifying enough. What was even more frightening was Lin Yun's adaptability on the battlefield. The man fought as if he were a fish in water, without a single trace of panic.
In contrast, their side, while appearing neat and orderly, was in reality just being pushed forward to their deaths.
"Stop fighting! What's the point? We can't win!"
An Shenyu glared venomously at Lin Yun's back, gritting his teeth. "It's all this bastard's fault! If he hadn't taken those people away, I could have definitely defeated the Crimson Ghost Sect! How could I possibly let them escape now?"
If An Shenyu had been wavering before, his mind was now made up. Staying here meant certain death. Seeing the complete lack of fighting spirit in the disciples around him, he decided to take the opportunity to slip away.
He glanced at his few cronies and gave them a subtle look. They had coordinated many times before and needed no further words. In an instant, An Shenyu and his small group erupted with immense power.
Like a bolt of lightning.
"Is that… a Wind-Swift Lightning-Fast Talisman?" a disciple cried out, turning his head in surprise. His eyes instantly widened with rage.
"That bastard An Shenyu! He abandoned us here to die!"
"An Shenyu, fuck your ancestors!"
The crowd roared in fury, utterly disgusted by An Shenyu's actions. But they were helpless. An Shenyu was stronger, and even if they wanted to chase him now, it would be futile.
Just as Lin Yun's group had opened a breakthrough, a figure flashed past them.
"Lin Yun, thanks so much for this! Helping us open this path!"
As An Shenyu charged past, Lin Yun raised a hand, stopping his own group from following.
"Senior Brother Lin, what are you doing?"
"That shameless bastard An Shenyu is stealing our path!" the disciples of the Beast Taming Sect cursed.
Xia Yijing's face was even uglier. Not long ago, she had even believed in An Shenyu's ability. If it weren't for him, none of this would have happened.
"The path ahead is blocked," Lin Yun said flatly. Just as he was preparing to break through, he had checked his panel. He knew that the path ahead was not a road to escape.
It was a road to ruin.
But it was obvious An Shenyu didn't know that. When he saw Lin Yun's group stop, seemingly entangled by other disciples, he laughed aloud. "Lin Yun, oh, Lin Yun. You think you're so incredible, but in the end, didn't you just do all the work for me? Thank you so much for your perseverance here. It's what gave me the chance to leave!" An Shenyu cackled.
His followers even had time to raise their middle fingers at Lin Yun's group.
Lin Yun watched coldly from the sidelines, his expression unmoved.
And in the next instant, they all saw a giant flying blade slice down from the sky, like a curtain of stars falling from the heavens.
With a deafening roar, the two followers at the very front were instantly devoured by a wave of blood-red energy.
Not even a single hair was left.
