Chapter 15: Week 2: Day 4 (Late Night to End of Day): Hibari: Jinnai Kaede vs. Hibari and Saya
"I'm not going back," Saya spoke softly. "No… I'm not going back anymore."
Jinnai, crouching in a squatting position, gazed at her quietly before shifting his eyes to Hibari. "That's fine if you don't want to go back, Miss… but if that's the case, I won't be able to return with anything, will I?"
With those words, he launched himself toward Hibari at a speed that seemed almost inhuman. A faint purple flame ignited in his hand, clutching a single dried leaf. Hibari moved in as well, sparking a flame of his own. Swinging his tonfa bathed in violet fire, he struck at Jinnai, who sidestepped and twisted his body to dodge, spinning in circular motions. At first glance, it appeared as though Jinnai was breakdancing around Hibari.
"Those foot movements… is that Capoeira?" Tetsuya remarked, watching intently as Saya silently observed the battle. Hibari continued striking, and Jinnai kept evading.
"Stop dodging… it's annoying," Hibari growled.
"..." Jinnai remained silent for a moment, a crazed, beastly grin spreading across his face. The single leaf in his hand had now multiplied into five. He began throwing them like sharp blades.
Hibari deflected them with his tonfa and closed in. Jinnai shifted his stance, stepping his left foot back while moving his right foot forward. His arms crossed in a formation that resembled an inverted cross, palms open.
Jinnai's right arm circled inward, deflecting the incoming tonfa strike. The block caused Hibari to momentarily lose his footing. Jinnai followed up with a sharp left punch. Hibari tilted his head to avoid it but was grazed by one of the bladed leaves hidden between Jinnai's fingers, leaving a shallow wound. In retaliation, Hibari crouched and drove his tonfa into Jinnai's stomach while the man was caught off guard.
"Hibari-san!"
"Hibari-san! Jinnai!" Tetsuya and Saya called out in unison. Blood began trickling profusely from the wound on Hibari's cheek, its flow amplified by the special cloud-element attribute.
"... Kung fu techniques?" Hibari muttered, observing Jinnai's fighting style. He wiped the blood off his cheek with the back of his hand. "And Muay Thai… or maybe Western boxing?"
Saya tugged urgently on Tetsuya's sleeve. "Tetsuya-san, do you have a megaphone? Please find me one!"
"H-Huh?" Tetsuya stammered in confusion before Saya repeated herself, prompting him to sprint toward the tent to retrieve what she needed.
Hurry, Tetsuya-san, or the garden will be destroyed before long.
"What's going on!?" Dino, Gokudera, Tsuna, Yamamoto, and the rest of the Guardians, along with assistants like Rinji and Naoka, rushed onto the scene. They saw the fierce fight unfolding from a distance. "Saya-chan, are you alright!?"
"Who is that guy?" Gokudera shouted, noticing the intensity escalating as Jinnai, after being struck in the stomach, momentarily faltered but immediately charged at Hibari again. Even though Hibari dodged, Jinnai managed to grab his shirt and slam him into the ground.
Boom!
"This is brutal," Yamamoto commented, his brow furrowed. "That guy's killing intent is no joke."
"That's Jinnai Kaede, Saya's personal attendant when she was a child, until she moved here," Reborn stated calmly from Dino's shoulder before leaping onto Saya's. "Isn't that right, Saya-chan?"
"This is insane! This is so fun! Hahaha!" Jinnai yelled maniacally, his face twisted in a crazed, bloodthirsty grin. A faint purple flame flickered in one of his eyes.
Hibari lifted a leg, hooked Jinnai's neck, flipped him down, and struck relentlessly with his tonfa, matching Jinnai's bloodlust.
Seeing an opening, Jinnai seized Hibari's tonfa with both hands, twisted it around, and prepared to counterattack. But before he could, Hibari kicked him, sending him crashing into a tree. Leaves fell like rain, and the tree's bark cracked, leaving a deep dent.
"This is getting way out of hand!" Tsuna screamed, terrified that the two might actually kill each other. "Enough already, both of you!"
"Do what you must, Saya-chan," Reborn said, tapping Leon on his hat. Leon transformed briefly into a rainbow form before elongating into a small megaphone, which he handed to Saya.
Saya accepted it, smiling gratefully at Reborn before turning to face the unfolding chaos.
"Hibari-san, after Jinnai stops, please don't attack him anymore," Saya called through the megaphone, her voice echoing loudly. Hibari scowled, visibly annoyed, gripping his tonfa tightly. Meanwhile, Jinnai slowly pushed himself up. Yellow dawn-element flames surrounded his injuries, gradually healing them before fading, replaced by violet flames. His previously rolled-back eyes regained focus, although his gaze appeared dazed.
Saya, noticing this, stepped forward amidst the group's alarm.
"Saya-chan!" Gokudera gently grabbed her wrist. Saya turned to look at him.
"I'll be fine. I can stop Jinnai," she reassured him with a smile, though the young man hesitated to let go.
"Trust her and let Saya handle this, Gokudera," Reborn advised. Gokudera reluctantly released her wrist. Yamamoto clenched his fists, his eyes filled with determination, while Dino did the same. Gokudera watched Saya's retreating figure with concern.
"Saya-chan isn't someone who likes being protected all the time. When she has the chance, she wants to protect others in her own way," Reborn added.
"Sayaka-chan," Tsuna murmured softly, watching her walk away. Reborn leapt onto Tsuna's shoulder as Sayaka passed by Hibari, who was standing nearby. At the same time, Tetsuya returned with a megaphone, and Jinnai staggered toward them, his movements unsteady due to the severe impact he had taken earlier.
Sayaka stopped walking, raising the megaphone before addressing him sternly. "Jinnai, stop right there, or I'll have to get serious."
Despite her warning, Jinnai kept advancing toward her, the yellow flame healing his wounds flickering out, only to be replaced by a blazing purple flame. His pace quickened from a walk to a full sprint toward Sayaka.
"Sayaka-san! Sayaka-chan!" shouted Tetsuya and Dino as Hibari dashed forward. Meanwhile, Sayaka calmly held the Leon-shaped megaphone to her mouth, ready to act.
"Ice cream!" she declared.
Jinnai's body froze midair. His previously glazed eyes regained clarity, and he looked utterly horrified as if confronted by a nightmare. He immediately clutched both ears with his hands. "No! No, milady! Please, have mercy on me!"
Sayaka tilted her head slightly. "Hmm… Just to be sure. Cake!" she added firmly.
Jinnai let out a bloodcurdling scream, tears streaming down his face, and pressed his hands harder against his ears. "No! Please, no, milady! Sayaka-sama, my kind, merciful lady, spare me! Aaaah!"
The faces of the Vongola Family, including members of Varia and Cavallone, were frozen in utter bewilderment. Even Rinji, Naoka, and Tetsuya were stunned, the branch that Tetsuya had been holding in his mouth dropping to the ground.
"What's wrong with that guy?" Naoka muttered.
"No clue," Rinji replied.
"Stopped by a little girl just shouting dessert names? How pathetic!" Squalo grumbled, looking thoroughly annoyed but unsure how to even react to the absurd situation.
"What… What's even happening right now?" Tsuna was still trying to wrap his head around the bizarre scene.
"I don't get it either, but it's incredible that Sayaka managed to stop him," Yamamoto remarked casually, scratching his head. Meanwhile, Gokudera stared at Sayaka, standing motionless, his mind racing with countless questions.
"Why did that even work?" Dino asked Reborn.
"It's a bit of a personal history between them. I think it's better if Sayaka-chan explains it herself," Reborn answered nonchalantly.
Once Upon a Time
There was a boy who worked as a trainee servant in a castle. He had a sweet tooth and was so obsessed with desserts that he neglected his duties of looking after the princess and training to become a knight who could protect the castle. His negligence was so severe that the princess fell ill. One night, he was caught stealing sweets from the kitchen in the middle of the night.
The incident reached the head servant's ears. Even though the king and queen paid little attention to the princess, it was the boy's responsibility to take care of her. His failure in this duty could not go unnoticed.
As punishment, the head servant allowed him to eat as many sweets as he desired. At first, the boy was thrilled, but over time, he couldn't take it anymore. His meals were replaced entirely with sugary treats and overly sweet drinks, each one so cloyingly sweet that it could intoxicate any child and make them sick of desserts for the rest of their life.
The punishment continued for months until the head servant gave him an ultimatum:
"If you want this punishment to stop, take care of the princess. Follow her orders without question. Do not be lazy, procrastinate, or lie. Be loyal to her."
The princess was completely unaware of the punishment inflicted upon her young servant until one day when she asked for shaved ice. At that moment, the princess realized she had inadvertently opened the boy's "Pandora's Box."
"This is roughly what happened," Saya explained as Reborn and Fon used a puppet-like doll to illustrate the story. The explanation followed after everything had calmed down and Tetsuya had taken Hibari to have his wounds treated. "Honestly, I don't want to resort to something like that again. Poor Jinnai." Saya sighed deeply.
"That's ridiculous! Jinnai lost because of his sweet tooth?!" Squalo exclaimed, pointing dramatically at the boy sitting cross-legged nearby. Jinnai crossed his arms, veins bulging with irritation.
"Well, what do you expect? I was only four years old back then," Jinnai said defensively. He glanced at Saya, who was sitting politely on the grass. "By the way, Miss Saya, I thought you were being threatened by some violent mafia group. That's why I rushed to help."
"Violent?!" Gokudera snapped, leaping up. "Are you insulting the great Vongola Family?!" Yamamoto quickly held him back, grinning awkwardly.
"Calm down. Jinnai was just worried about Saya," Yamamoto said, trying to diffuse the situation.
Jinnai was surprised by Yamamoto's friendly defense. He hadn't expected kindness after fighting someone named Hibari earlier. "Uh… thanks for speaking up for me."
Yamamoto smiled, but Tsuna interrupted, asking, "So, Mr. Jinnai, are you planning to take Saya back home?"
The question stunned everyone, though a few had already suspected that Saya's background was far from ordinary. Some even had an inkling of the truth.
"Well… if I'm being honest, yes," Jinnai admitted. "At first, I thought Miss Saya had been kidnapped by some mafia group when she left home. That rumor surfaced about two days ago, so I investigated and stumbled upon all the strange happenings in Namimori. Miss Saya said she liked the view here, so I figured something must've happened."
"Yesterday, I saw Jinnai wandering around town," Reborn chimed in. "He was dealing with some thugs trying to steal his motorbike. He beat them up pretty badly. I saw potential in him, so I invited him to join us. I didn't expect him to know Saya."
"Why does everything you say sound so suspicious?" Tsuna muttered, shooting Reborn a distrustful look.
"Well, coincidences happen because the world is round," Reborn replied nonchalantly. "So, Saya, do you want to go back home?"
Saya shook her head firmly. "I will never go back there... not for the rest of my life."
"That won't please your father," Jinnai sighed. "If I can't bring you back, I'll definitely be punished. I was hoping to return with you, get your father to sign my vacation request, and use the money to travel the world and train under Master Squalo for two years. But now, it looks like I might get my resignation papers instead. So…" Jinnai smiled mischievously, like a child, "I'll just join the Vongola Family!"
"W-What?" Tsuna's eyes widened.
"Sure," Reborn agreed before Tsuna could react, making the sudden decision even more baffling. "But don't even think about taking Saya back. If money's the issue, we'll find work for you." Reborn's gaze locked with Jinnai's, silently conveying a deeper understanding.
"Thank you. As for me, I'll follow Miss Saya's orders wholeheartedly, even if it's no longer my duty." With that, Jinnai moved closer to Saya, gently taking her hand and brushing his lips lightly against the back of it. He then met her eyes with a warm smile. "The head butler always said I was a strange one. I hope the Vongola Family will show mercy to someone as peculiar as me."
Gokudera stared at Jinnai for a moment, then turned away, while Yamamoto glanced at him before doing the same. Somehow, fate—or pure coincidence—made the two end up facing each other.
"What are you looking at?!" Gokudera snapped, while Yamamoto just laughed nervously, not bothering to answer. He kept looking at Gokudera until the latter huffed and turned away.
"Looks like we've got a common enemy, baseball idiot," Gokudera muttered, referring to the earlier scene.
"Is that so?" Yamamoto asked. "But Jinnai didn't harm us or anything."
"Idiot! That's beside the point!" Gokudera yelled, catching everyone's attention again. When the others realized it was nothing, he lowered his voice. "I don't trust that guy… those eyes of his…"
"I get it," Yamamoto agreed. "…Those eyes definitely belong to someone who's killed before. And not just once."
"That look in his eyes... it's not the first time he's killed someone, but judging from it, he doesn't have much experience in that area. Still, his fighting skills show he's no amateur," Squalo said. "Honestly, if that kid Saya hadn't stopped them earlier, who knows how far those two would have gone rampaging? That thing Jinnai said about being a monster—it's the real deal." A grin spread across the silver-haired man's face, as if he'd just found an exciting new toy. "Now this... this is going to be fun."
Lussuria adjusted his glasses slightly, his gaze carefully observing Jinnai. "...But I feel like, when he's in front of Saya-chan, that kid barely emits any killing intent," he said, adjusting his glasses again. Reflected in Lussuria's lenses were the images of Saya and Jinnai. After staring at them for a moment, Lussuria suddenly gasped in shock, his face turning bright red. "...Oh my! This is scandalous!"
"What is it, Lussuria?" Squalo asked, but Lussuria had already broken into a look of giddy delight, as if he'd uncovered the greatest secret of all humanity.
Lussuria paused for a moment, then turned to Squalo and said, "It's a secret, darling. Heehee." Squalo clicked his tongue in annoyance and walked off toward the vending machine, with Lussuria trailing behind him. Meanwhile, Gokudera and Yamamoto stood there, confused by the exchange, until Shamal leaned in and whispered into Gokudera's ear.
"Whatever you're planning, hurry it up. Otherwise, the freak might snatch the princess back."
"Are you asking for it?!" Gokudera's face flushed crimson. He seriously wanted to stuff a stick of dynamite into Shamal's mouth right then and there.
At the same time, Yamamoto watched Jinnai and Saya in silence. Jinnai, noticing Yamamoto's gaze, turned and gave him a friendly smile.
