Chapter 28: 【28】Meeting my mentor1

Her husband was angry, but Sun Rongfang wasn’t worried. She said to her daughter, “Your dad’s temper, he will come around in a few days.”

The men of the Old Xie Family were all the same, chauvinistic and particularly concerned about face, yet lacked real competence. In the face of reality, they could not stir up any trouble.

On the contrary, among Sun Rongfang’s family, there were more children who were good at their studies. For example, the two children of her cousin Zhou Ruomei did exceptionally well in school. Xie Wanying’s maternal aunt’s daughter, Linlin, who was five years younger than Xie Wanying, also performed well in her studies. However, it was common for relatives and friends to have their own agendas. So for her to attend university, it was no surprise that her maternal aunt supported her first, and Zhou Ruomei’s opposition was also expected – everyone had their own needs.

In the blink of an eye, the university admission notices had arrived. This time, Xie Wanying bumped into Zhao Wenzong at her alma mater.

When they encountered each other in the corridor, eye to eye, there was a sense of mutual understanding. After all, they had both been students whom Teacher Liu had scolded and deemed to have no promising futures.

This time, it was not Teacher Liu who distributed the university admission notices, but a teacher from the administrative office named Teacher Wang, who was standing in for Teacher Liu’s class. Teacher Wang explained to their classmates, “Teacher Liu caught a cold these last few days, probably because the weather is too hot. She has been running a fever at home. Why don’t you go and see how she is doing?”

Among the students Teacher Liu liked, Monitor Yu didn’t even come to school, let alone visit Teacher Liu.

Zhang Wei’s family came to collect her notice; she didn’t come to the school either. As for Hu Hao, he turned around and left as soon as he spotted Zhao Wenzong from a distance.

A group of students whispered among themselves, “What’s wrong with Teacher Liu? How did she suddenly fall ill?”

The students felt as if they could see right through it – they had heard that Teacher Liu had become erratic ever since the release of her students’ university entrance exam results.

“Xie Wanying, why don’t you go see your Teacher Liu?” Teacher Wang seemed to have had it planned all along and addressed Xie Wanying directly.

The other students’ gazes turned towards her.

Xie Wanying returned their looks calmly.

The students she looked at felt uneasy. They all remembered when Xie Wanying was applying for university; not a single classmate had stood up to speak for Xie Wanying when she was being mocked and scoffed at by Teacher Liu and Monitor Yu. In fact, none of them were good people.

“What’s wrong, Teacher Liu is your headteacher, and you are the science top student she has nurtured,” Teacher Wang emphasized.

Xie Wanying’s expression remained calm, looking at Teacher Wang with such composure as if she were in fact Teacher Wang’s mentor.

Teacher Wang’s heart suddenly jolted.

True, Teacher Liu was the headteacher, but she had never done anything for Xie Wanying. Teacher Liu’s heart did not embrace all the students as her own; only the likes of Zhang Wei, Monitor Yu, and Hu Hao were the apple of Teacher Liu’s eye. Xie Wanying was not.

Why should she go see Teacher Liu?

“Teacher Wang, what did you say? You want her to go see Teacher Liu?”

Teacher Wang shuddered violently and turned around.

At the doorway, there stood a female teacher in her sixties, wearing glasses, with a head full of silvery-grey hair. Facing Teacher Wang with a professional questioning tone, her profound gaze made it impossible for Teacher Wang to evade.

A look of surprise appeared in Xie Wanying’s eyes as she called out, “Teacher Zhuang.”

“Teacher Zhuang has returned!” The teachers rushed to spread the news and came over to greet Teacher Zhuang.

Teacher Zhuang was a renowned leader of the college entrance examination math research group at Jin Qiao High School. Over the years, she had nurtured numerous talented students. But, she had to retire from school last year when she reached retirement age, supposedly to help take care of her grandson at her son’s home.
