Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Meeting Mrs. Li
The car fell silent once again.
Su Jinqi looked out the window, appearing calm on the surface, but in reality, her heart felt like a hundred little rabbits were jumping around, her nervousness overwhelming. Meeting the parents, although she had never experienced it, she knew the importance of it, fearing that she might say something wrong and offend not only the Chairman's wife but also the Buddha beside her.
She lowered her head to check her phone, sneakily looking up tips on meeting parents on Baidu. There was all sorts of advice, varied and vast. She scanned through briefly and positioned herself: speak less, do more.
Putting away her phone, Su Jinqi reached up to tidy the stray hairs by her ears. With Li Jinghan beside her, she felt too embarrassed to touch up her makeup with powder, so she had to leave it as is.
The car traveled through the snow, heading back home, and parked in the yard. Li Jinghan got out of the car first. Su Jinqi took a few deep breaths, patted her cheeks with both hands, and gathered her courage to open the car door.
In the living room, Xu Peirong was sitting in the middle of the couch, sipping tea, when she heard the noise, looked up, and saw her son and daughter-in-law walking in.
"My son is back!" Xu Peirong quickly put down her teacup, her face full of smiles like any ordinary mother.
When had Su Jinqi ever seen the Chairman's wife smile? It was indeed a rare sight!
Xu Peirong's gaze fell on Su Jinqi standing beside her, sizing her up. Hmm, the height is good, pretty and cute in appearance, slightly lacking in temperament, but still quite a match standing next to her son.
Her son had previously told her that he had registered for a marriage, and she thought it was Yang Qianyu. However, when she saw the unfamiliar young girl on the marriage certificate, she was stunned. Her son didn't say much about his wife, and she didn't ask much either, believing anyone her son would marry couldn't come from too poor a background. Right now, getting the shares was the most important thing!
"Chairman... ah, mom." Su Jinqi blurted out in panic.
She hadn't called anyone mom since she was four; this title was so unfamiliar that it made her skin crawl.
Mrs. Hui came out from the kitchen and respectfully said, "Madam, young master, Young Mistress, dinner is ready."
"Good, let's eat and talk." Xu Peirong slowly stood up and walked to the dining room shoulder to shoulder with Li Jinghan.
Mrs. Hui had prepared a lavish dinner, all dishes favored by the madam and young master.
Su Jinqi sat next to Li Jinghan, not daring to look up at Xu Peirong.
"What's your name?" Xu Peirong's first impression of her was still okay, but this timid and restrained demeanor of hers was not very pleasing.
Her uncle had once told her that when talking to someone, one should look into the other person's eyes as a sign of respect. Su Jinqi kept this in mind, and even though she was nervous, she tried her best to look at Xu Peirong and replied with forced calm, "My name is Su Jinqi."
"Su..." Xu Peirong mulled over it while serving her son a piece of fish, puzzled, she asked, "In our Ning City, is there any notable family with the surname Su? Or is it from another city?"
Su Jinqi had just picked up a sticky rice ball when she heard this and trembled so much that the ball fell back into the small plate. Hearing the Chairman's wife, Su Jinqi was considered a wealthy family's young mistress. She dared not imagine what would happen when it was revealed that she came from a poor background.
"Neither, just an ordinary family." Li Jinghan spoke openly, seeming to rebuke his mother gently, and considerately picked a shrimp ball for Su Jinqi.
It's over! Su Jinqi's mind set off alarms, as what she feared was quickly becoming a reality.
"What did you say?" Xu Peirong's voice deepened with disbelief, "A common family? You chose a girl from a common family to be my daughter-in-law?" After asking, her eyes shot towards Su Jinqi angrily.
Su Jinqi looked back at her dazedly, her eyes filled with fear.
"Mom, we are eating, don't you hate arguing at the dining table?" Li Jinghan faced his mother's anger nonchalantly.
"Slam!" Xu Peirong slapped her chopsticks heavily on the table, "Jinghan, how can I even eat this meal?"
She looked back at Su Jinqi, the passion in her eyes completely gone, replaced by disdain. She asked reluctantly, "What do the parents do? Civil servants? University professors? Or doctors?"
Su Jinqi pursed her lips, glanced at Li Jinghan who was eating seriously, and reported truthfully, "My parents have been gone since I was young, and I grew up with my brother, raised by my uncle who works in an auto parts factory; my aunt is retired and does some part-time work."
Xu Peirong almost rolled her eyes! How could someone from such a background be suitable for her son? Their marriage registration is simply unthinkable!
"So let me ask you, you poor and decrepit family, how did you seduce my son?" Xu Peirong was so angry that she no longer spoke politely.
Su Jinqi's ears burned with the harsh words, embarrassed and indignant. It was actually your son who pursued me and registered our marriage, right? But how could she say such words out loud? She was here to repay a debt of gratitude for what her brother had done wrong.
Seeing her silent, Xu Peirong added fiercely, "This marriage doesn't count, I don't approve! You should pack your things later, I'll have the driver take you back. Tomorrow, go to the Civil Affairs Bureau to get a divorce. I will give Miss Su some money as compensation for mental distress."
Really? Su Jinqi, hearing that she was to get a divorce, looked at Xu Peirong excitedly.
But Xu Peirong misunderstood that look and said displeasedly, "It doesn't matter if you don't want to leave, our Li Family won't accept someone like you who can't be presented in public as a daughter-in-law! You need some self-awareness!"
Huh? Su Jinqi didn't understand how the Chairman's wife could tell she didn't want to leave. She felt both amused and annoyed inside.
Li Jinghan put down his utensils and said to Su Jinqi, "Finish eating and go back to your room."
Su Jinqi, feeling relieved, put down her chopsticks and left the dining room.
After she left, Xu Peirong then complained to Li Jinghan, "Son, why did you find such a person to be your wife? Don't you care about the face of the Li Family?"
"What's wrong with this person?" Li Jinghan picked up his utensils and continued eating, speaking casually, "She has eyes and a nose, perfectly normal."
"Yang Qianyu, in terms of character, appearance, and family background, isn't she much better than this poor family? What exactly do you see in her?" Xu Peirong sighed deeply. "Do you think your mother has grown old and can be easily deceived? If I had known she was like this when you showed me the marriage certificate, I would've insisted that you get a divorce that very day!"
Li Jinghan remained indifferent to his mother's words and continued to eat his meal.
Seeing her son's indifferent attitude, Xu Peirong started nagging again, "Your father and I will not agree to this wife of yours! Get the divorce done immediately tomorrow. I know you and Qianyu had a misunderstanding, she made you unhappy—girls tend to be thin-skinned, a bit willful, and can be a bit stubborn, but you should not be too harsh on her. Hurry up and get married to Qianyu."
"She just sweet-talked you quite a bit over here, but in your eyes, isn't the shares much more important than who the daughter-in-law is?" Li Jinghan said coolly, "You don't need to worry."
