Fallen Star's Legacy

Chapter 14: Irregularities(1)

The stone chamber was silent.

Its walls were covered in ancient runes, pulsing softly like the heartbeat of something alive. At its center stood the enormous doors to the Awakening Room—smooth black stone, unmarred by time. The only light in the room came from braziers burning with pale-blue flame, casting flickering shadows across the floor.

Only four people were present.

Lucien stood at the center, robed in white ceremonial cloth. The fabric was light, but he could feel its weight—emotional more than physical.

Behind him stood his father—stern and silent, arms crossed behind his back, jaw clenched.

Maeve stood with her usual quiet sharpness, her eyes locked on Lucien with a rare trace of worry.

And the evaluator—robed in silver, face hidden behind a mirrored mask—waited by the Awakening Room with a glowing tablet in his hand.

It was a private ceremony, by special request. No crowds, no observers. Just the three who had trained and watched him grow.

And yet, despite the absence of others—Lucien didn't feel alone.

---

Before the Ceremony

"Lucien!"

He turned toward the entrance.

Seraphina, his stepmother, glided into the chamber with her usual grace. Her warm smile softened the weight in his chest. Celeste followed at her side, visibly excited, her footsteps echoing too loudly in the quiet space.

> "We know it's supposed to be private," Seraphina said as she approached, "but we had to see you before you went in."

Lucien blinked, surprised. "They let you in?"

Celeste grinned. "They didn't have to let her in. She just walked past them like she owned the place."

Seraphina chuckled, brushing imaginary dust from his shoulder. "You're not going in there alone, Lucien. Not in spirit, at least."

He looked between them, unsure what to say. A part of him had expected to face this moment in silence. Their presence shifted something in him—a quiet steadiness, like a hand gently pressed to the center of his chest.

> "You've trained harder than anyone I've seen," Seraphina said, her voice warm but firm. "Not to impress us. Not to prove anything. Just… to become who you were meant to be."

She placed her hand gently on his cheek.

> "No matter what happens inside that chamber—remember that we're proud of you. All of us."

Celeste stepped forward next. She hesitated for a second, then hugged him tightly.

> "Kick the chamber's butt," she mumbled into his shoulder. "And if you come out with wings or something, I totally get to brag about it."

Lucien snorted softly, hugging her back. "Deal."

Seraphina pulled her shawl around her shoulders and gave one final, knowing look before taking Celeste's hand and stepping back toward the chamber exit.

> "We'll be waiting."

The Awakening Room

The chamber fell quiet again.

The silver-masked evaluator stepped forward.

> "Are you ready?" he asked.

Lucien gave a short nod. "Yes."

The man raised the tablet in his hands, tapping a few glowing glyphs. The runes on the chamber door flickered once, twice, and then began to shift—ancient sigils rearranging themselves like puzzle pieces, unlocking a doorway older than any of them.

But before the doors opened, the evaluator paused.

> "You should understand what lies ahead

> "Typically, the Awakening is done with multiple candidates," the evaluator said, voice calm and clinical. "The room assesses them one at a time. It interacts with the soul, examining memory, emotion, and intent. The Codex responds accordingly—manifesting an affinity, ability, or resonance."

Lucien listened carefully, trying to hide the nervous tremble in his fingertips.

> "Most candidates experience brief visions—reflections of their inner selves. Joys, regrets, fears. It is rarely dangerous. A connection is formed, and the chamber grants what is earned."

> "But every now and then…" he looked up, though his face remained hidden behind the mirrored mask. "The Codex encounters something it cannot easily define."

> "In such cases, it digs deeper. And the room reacts… unpredictably."

Maeve spoke then, her voice firmer than usual.

> "Don't resist it, Lucien. Whatever it shows you—accept it. Face it. That's all it asks."

Lucien looked at her, then at his father. The man hadn't said a word. But his gaze met Lucien's—and though it was hard to tell, something in his eyes almost looked… afraid.

The evaluator gestured.

> "Step forward."

---

Lucien took a deep breath, then crossed the threshold.

As soon as his foot touched the glowing circle inside, the runes around the room flared.

The door behind him sealed shut with a thud—cutting him off from the world outside.

The air was cold.

The space was vast and empty, the silence so deep it rang in his ears.

Only the glowing rune beneath his feet gave any light. He felt something stir beneath his skin—like the space itself was looking into him.

He exhaled.

> "Show me."

And the Awakening began.

---

Outside the Chamber

Time moved slowly.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty.

Maeve stood still, arms crossed, eyes locked on the sealed doorway.

> "He should be out by now."

The evaluator was watching the tablet closely. Symbols shifted rapidly, fluctuating in color and form. He tapped a glyph and narrowed his eyes.

> "His Codex resonance is… irregular."

Lucien's father stepped closer. "What do you mean?"

> "The Codex isn't syncing properly. The readings spike, then drop… and spike again. It's as if it keeps trying to rewrite itself."

Thirty minutes.

Then forty.

Maeve spoke again, her voice tight. "Is this normal?"

> "No," the evaluator admitted. "It isn't."

An hour passed.

The air inside the chamber began to shift. The braziers flickered. The floor trembled ever so slightly.

Then came the hum—low, ancient, and rising like the distant echo of a titan's heartbeat.

The runes on the door, once soft and dim, now burned with bright golden light. The symbols surged and danced, faster and faster, until the walls themselves were humming with energy.

The evaluator's voice dropped to a whisper.

> "This… this has never happened before."

Lucien's father took a single step forward. Maeve moved beside him, her expression unreadable.

Still, the doors did not open.
