Chapter 09: Lunar Ball (Part 01)
Chapter 09:
Lunar Ball
Part
I
Raven's navy blue eyes lingered on the Blood Moon as it rose higher in the sky. The Lunar Ball would start soon. The Vampires have yet to arrive. Part of her was curious to see those they were expected to kill during the war. This would be the only time she'd get to see them without trying to cut their head off. Perhaps, it wouldn't be a bad idea to size her opponents. She could look around and see who would be easy picking and who it was best for her to avoid.
"Ahem," Lycan cleared his throat. "Before the Lunar Ball starts. I want to go over a few things." He stood in front of his pack. "I take it you all brought your phones like I instructed." Raven didn't have a cell phone. Lord Grimm destroyed it after she gave up her fame. Claire still had hers, she was certain her sister was smart to bring it just in case. "If you do not have a phone, please raise your hand and I'll give you one. Courtesy of my father." Jay and Jayson were quick to raise their hand.
"Wait," Raven laughed. "Let me get this straight," She laughed again. "So the guy who broke my original phone is getting me a new one." Lycan nodded. "It's nice to see he's finally coming to his senses."
"Don't be a smart ass, Raven." Lycan handed her a new cell phone. She went to grab it before she could. He pulled the phone away from her. "Not so fast there dearest," She rolled her eyes at him.
"Let me guess more restrictions," Raven scoffed. "This is ridiculous, it's a phone. What do you think I'm going to do with it?"
"For starters, I can't have you cheating on me." Lycan replied. "I'm afraid as much as I'd like to trust you. I don't, there lies the problem." He pointed out. "So,I'm going to give you his phone under one condition." He handed her the phone. "I get to check it regularly if you refuse then I'll smash it and it won't be replaced."
"Fine," Raven stashed the phone into her cleavage. The only place she could hold a phone. Dresses weren't known for having pockets. "While you're at it," She smirked. "Why don't you tape my mouth shut too. I mean we can't have me talking to other guys either. It's pretty much the same thing."
"Still being a smart ass, I see," Lycan chuckled. "Adorable you're like a child. I look forward to shaping you into a worthy bride." He kissed her cheek. She wiped off her cheek afterward. "Cute," He grinned. "Jay, Jayson, here are your phones." He handed the werewolf twins their new cell phones. "I have news regarding these phones. I've spoken to the mayor of the town. Or at least my father did, there will be reception towers installed in our area. So, we can now communicate by phone at our campsite."
"This is so cool," Jay blurted out. Lycan scolded him in response. "Sorry," He stashed his phone into his pocket.
"As I was saying," Lycan resumed. "We will now be able to communicate to each other by phone. This means our once silent Beta," He turned to Alejandro, "Now has a means to communicate with you all by text message. That's if he chooses to." He held a cell phone out to Alejandro. "It's not much but do at least try to use it. We can't have you silent forever." Alejandro groaned and accepted Lycan's gift.
"Sweet," Jayson smirked. "We already got Alejandro's number bro." He showed Jay his contact list. "This is cool, we can text him and shit. I'll text him right now." Alejandro's phone went off but he didn't bother to look at the screen. "Well aren't you going to check it?" Alejandro shook his head. "Lame,"
"He's not answering because you're not his favorite." Jay spoke in a cocky tone. "See I'm his favorite. Check this out." He took out his phone and texted Alejandro. "He's going to reply, I know he is." Alejandro's phone went off but again he didn't bother to check it. "What, I thought I was the favorite."
"I guess he doesn't have favorites." Claire took Jay's phone. "Now that you've got a phone, I'll just add my number to your list. There," She handed Jay back his phone. "That way, I can contact you if we get separated in the ballroom."
"Smart," Jay sent her a text so she'd have his number. "Wait, Leader Lycan is that one of the reasons why we have these phones?"
"Yes, you're quick to catch on as usual." Lycan patted Jay on the head. "When the Lunar Ball is over, you will receive a text from me telling you where to meet. I will begin the head count and then we will leave. Any questions?" His eyes wandered the pack. He waited for a minute but none of them said anything. "Good," He growled, his nostrils sniffing the air. "It appears the leeches have arrived."
"Leeches?" Raven raised her brow. She sniffed the air, the scent of blood struck her. The scent was so strong, it overwhelmed her. She watched as an army of Vampires gathered at the right side of the Ball room door. In the crowd of Vampires. The men were wearing suits and ties. The women were wearing fancy dresses. Out of all of them, there was only one vampire that had caught her eye.
Raven's eyes trailed up from the man's black leather dress shoes and up to his strong agile legs. She peaked around getting a glimpse of his well rounded ass hugged by those black dress pants. His abs, it was hard for her to see underneath that white silk dress shirt. He's probably wearing another shirt underneath to conceal his frame. She continued up to his broad shoulders hugged by a solid black suit jacket. The strands of his soft lustrous shoulder length dark mocha hair brushed slightly with the wind's current. Out of all of this man's handsome features. There was only one that was able to fully captivate her attention. His pale hazel eyes.
The deep sadness that dwells within this man's eyes. He was trying to hide it but she could feel it. For some reason, she could even understand it. She didn't know why or how but when she looked at him. It was like staring into her own reflection. The look on his face, it's the exact same as hers. She didn't understand it but she wanted to. This vampire, she was curious to know more about him. Perhaps some explanation as to why she was able to feel the sadness that dwells in his beautiful eyes.
"Raven," Claire snapped her fingers in Raven's face. "Helloooo," She waved her hand in Raven's face. "I just asked you a question. Are you even listening to me?" Claire punched Raven's upper arm.
"I'm sorry, what?" Raven took her eyes off the vampire and rubbed her bruised arm. "I wasn't paying attention."
"The day you actually listen to me. That will be the day I die of shock." Claire let out a deep sigh. "Anyway, I was just saying that it's a bit messed up that we are expected to share the Lunar Ball with them." She pointed over at the vampires. "It's ridiculous, we shouldn't have to share anything with those blood sucking leeches." She complained. "This is so unfair,"
"Tell me about it, I can't deal with their scent. My nose is more sensitive than the rest of you guys." Jay covered his nose. "How am I supposed to enjoy myself when I have to smell blood all night long. It's already bad enough that we have to fight them on a regular basis. I wish they'd just die already." He choked on their scent. "It's so bad, I can taste it."
"Yeah, their presence just ruins the whole thing," Jayson complained. "They smell horrible and their skin is pale like a corpse. Why can't they just be a corpse?" He shrugged. "It's pretty much the same thing. Corpses stink just as bad."
Raven's eyes returned to the vampire that was in the crowd. For some reason she just couldn't get him out of her head. It bothered her to see that look on his face to know he was hurting. Yet, not one person could see it, except her.
"Well Raven," Jayson put his hand on her shoulder. "What do you think of the smell?" She turned to face him.
"Actually, um," Raven laughed to herself. "The smell really isn't that bad," She shrugged. "I'm sure after some time we could get used to it." She reasoned her eyes once again returning to the vampire in the crowd.
"That is not a smell," Lycan snarled. "I would want to get used to," He bared his sharp canines at Lord Alexander. The King of the Vampires. "I can't wait to sink my teeth into his flesh and naw at the bone." Jay and Jayson went to leave. "Easy," He placed his hand on Jayson's chest. "I know he's here, you'll get your chance to kill him soon enough." The werewolf twins growled and took a step back.
The Vampires were all gathered at the door in wait for the Lunar Ball to start. Angel stood in the front of the crowd with the rest of his team. The werewolves were also gathered at doors. Every last one of them was staring at them. Their sharp canines bared at them. It was as if they were a stain on the rug that they couldn't get rid of. Their eyes were filled with so much hatred. That hate it's what connects them. It's the reason this war is even happening. Sadly, Angel was just a mere pawn and could do nothing to fix it. Not that he knew how to fix it or where to begin. It just bothered him to see this much hatred directed toward his friends, toward him.
"Repugnant beasts," Blaire's face was filled with disgust. "How long do we need to tolerate the smell of dogs?" She held her nose. "Disgusting," She snapped her fingers at Angel getting his attention. "Dearest, I think it's time we addressed the team."
"Right," Angel turned away from the wolves trying his best to ignore the hateful glances. He put his hands in his pockets and followed Blaire over to his team. "Alright everyone, I hope you all brought your phones like I instructed." The team nodded. "Okay, good, now Blaire is going to go over a few things before we go inside. Blaire, go ahead." He stepped aside.
"Excuse me but did I ask for your permission?" Blaire snapped. "I will address my team," She pointed at herself. "When I feel like it I don't need you to chime in. Now move aside," She pushed Angel back. "Their rightful leader is talking. Remember you're just a figurehead. Know your place,"
"Okay, fine," Angel held his hands up in surrender. "I'll let you do whatever and just stay out of your way."
"Smart boy," Blaire patted Angel on the head like he were some dog. "Alright, everyone," She turned her attention toward the team. "Listen up, I don't like repeating myself so I suggest you listen well."
"The way this works is simple," Blaire began. "When this stupid Lunar Ball thing is over. You will receive a text from me." She showed them her phone. "The text will be a location in the ballroom where you are to meet. I will do a quick head count and we will leave. If you are not at that location in ten minutes after the text. There will be consequences." She explained. "Now, do we understand or do I need to repeat it?" Blaire glared at the team. Brandon raised his hand. "What Brandon," She rubbed her forehead. "Of course you'd be too dumb to follow simple directions."
"No, I got the directions." Brandon pointed out. "I'm curious though," He rubbed his chin. "What are the consequences if we don't make it there in ten minutes?"
"Keep talking and you'll find out." Blaire created a sword from diamond. "Anymore dumb ass questions?"
"I have one," Ziek raised his hand. "Explain this to me, why is it that Angel has to train us and take care of literally everything while you sit on the throne? This is the first time I've ever seen you take charge and quite frankly I think you suck at it."
"Excuse me," Blaire walked up to Ziek. "Would you mind running that by me one more time?" She held her sword to his throat.
"I'm just saying it wouldn't kill you to show us some damn respect." Ziek glared into her eyes. "Angel has more respect for us in his pinky than you do in your entire body. He's not even royalty and he knows more about respect than you do. That's saying something." Blaire but her lip then turned and smacked Ziek in the jaw. "I guess you're not your father's daughter after all." He wiped the blood from his lip.
"That's Enough, Ziek," Fate placed his hand on Ziek's shoulder. "As much as I'd love to see daddy's little girl be put in place. She'll never understand or even try to change. She's just a bitch and that's all there is to it."
"What did you call me?" Blaire challenged getting face to face with Fate. "Call me a bitch again. See if I don't chop your fucking head off."
"You're lucky I didn't bring my sword with me. Otherwise, I'd be more than happy to say it again. I'm just itching to fight you, give me a reason, come on." Fate urged her forward. "Do it, give me one reason," He held up one finger. "I just need one reason to kick your ass and I'll take it. Come on, Blaire," Fate challenged. "Just give me a reason so Scythe won't be able to protect you. I just need one please," He begged. "Once I get it, I swear," He placed his hand over his heart. "I'll whip your ass like your daddy should have done a long ass time ago."
"That's it," Blaire tried to swing her sword but her father caught the blade. "I've had enough of this father," She yelled. "Let me kill this prick and be done with it. I will not tolerate his insults anymore."
"Enough," Lord Alexander snapped his fingers. The sword shattered in her hand becoming small shards on the ground. "The wolves are staring. I will not have my kind be made a fool of. Now," He gripped Blaire's shoulder. "Behave yourself daughter and act like you have some sense." She bit her lip. "Angel," He called out.
"Yes, my lord," Angel stepped forward.
"The team seems quite fond of you so please take care of any questions they might have." Lord Alexander ordered. He replied with a nod. "Blaire," He turned to face her. "Come with me, you've done enough." He took Blaire with him as he was walking away.
Angel noticed Lord Alexander and Scythe exchanging bothered glances at each other. He wasn't sure what Scythe and Lord Alexander had been discussing amongst themselves. But it seems, they were at a disagreement. He was certain. It had something to do with Blaire and her behavior. Either way, it was none of his business so he'd stay out of it and focus on his duties as Commander.
"Okay, guys," Angel turned his attention to his team. "Do any of you have any questions?" Selene raised her hand. "Go ahead Selene,"
"Are we going to be checked for fleas on our way out?" Selene asked. Fate, Brandon, and Jayden all busted out laughing. "I mean we should be. We are going to be near dogs." Angel shook his head. He never expected this sort of behavior from Selene. Brandon most definitely but not Selene.
"Selene," Angel let out a deep sigh. "Can we please not trash talk the enemy?" He scolded. "We are not here to insult them. This is their event. We are just lucky enough to share it with them. Now, any more questions?" Brandon raised his hand. Great, Selene had to get Brandon fired up. Now he had to shut it down. "What did I just say?" Angel glared at Brandon. He lowered his hand. "Thank you, so I take it, that's all of the questions." He waited but there were no hands raised. "Okay good, have fun everyone." He went back over to Blaire and her father.
"Excuse me," A woman with platinum blonde hair began walking through the crowd. Her straight hair went to her lower back. She wore a short cut white dress with heeled boots. She had a slender build and long legs. Her eyes were bright blue, shining like crystals. "Pardon me," She walked past Angel, Blaire, and Lord Alexander taking her spot in front of everyone. On her right wrist Angel noticed a tattoo of a cursive "P".
"Hello everyone, I'm Liley," She placed her hands on her chest. "Those of you who don't know, I'm the mayor of this beautiful town. I'm also the person who helped prepare for this rare occasion. I worked really hard trying to make this event perfect for you. It was quite a challenge but I think I nailed it. So," The guys guarding the doors prepared to open them. "Let's wait no longer, I welcome you all to the Lunar Ball."
The doors to the ballroom began to slowly open. Werewolves were going inside through the door on the right. While Vampires were entering from the left. "We have to hurry," Raine rushed into the crowd of vampires. She had to get inside before the doors were shut. "Fang," She called out.
"Right behind you," Fang forced her way through the crowd of werewolves. She entered the ballroom with the werewolves. Being a human it was smarter for her to hide amongst those that wouldn't try to drink her blood.
"Wait for me," Vanilla chased after Raine. She stopped just before entering the ballroom. Her eyes took notice of the "P" tattoo on Liley's wrist. It was the exact same tattoo as the woman who stole Jake from her.
"Can I help you with something?" Liley stood there holding the door open.
"No, we're good." Raine answered for her.
"But," Vanilla wanted to argue but before she could get another word out. Raine grabbed hold of her forearm and pulled her inside.
Lord Grimm walked through the entry with his son Lycan by his side. He was escorting Raven alongside him. The second her navy blues met with the elegance that existed beyond those doors. It was clear to her, the long wait to get inside only paled in comparison. The woman wasn't joking, she really did work hard on this place.
The ballroom had to be at least three stories high. The ceiling above the massive dance floor was made of glass. Presenting an incredible view of the night sky and the blood moon as it set in the night sky. The decorations were nothing short of pure elegance. Dividing the ball room into two separate sides was a fence built out of a line of steel pipes and a long silver chain connecting them together. It could be crossed simply by ducking underneath the chain or stepping over it. Though, Raven doubted anybody would be dumb enough to try it.
Both sides had several dining tables set up. All of them were covered by white table cloths and with a vase of red roses as a centerpiece. In the very back was a large table with fruit punch, glass cups, and all sorts of sweet treats. Shamefully, the vampire's side lacked in the sweet treats department. They only had a punch bowl which Raven assumed was filled with blood instead of punch. Both sides had a bar with a bartender ready to serve them drinks. Raven wasn't old enough to drink but she was sure some of the other werewolves were. Alejandro being one of them.
In the very front of the ballroom was a large stage. There was a microphone set up in the front. The stage lights were all turned off leaving the stage pitch black. Just before the stage was a judge's panel set for two. The second, Raven eyes got a glimpse of the white grand piano that was there in the background. She knew what she wanted to sing for the competition. Tonight, that piano would become far more than a fancy decoration.
"Hello," The photographer waved at them. "Is the lovely couple ready to have their picture taken?" -Pictures?!- Raven turned to face Lycan. He never said anything about them having to take a picture together.
"No, we're good," Raven tried to free her hand from Lycan's. He refused to let go. She kept trying to free herself but his grip was too tight. The bastard wouldn't let go.
"Yes," Lycan answered. "We would like to have our picture taken," He pulled her to his side as if she were some prize he had won. This action pissed her off to no end. She didn't want to take a picture with this asshole. She refused to stand there and serve as his trophy. "Smile Raven," He forced a smile.
"I need some time before I'm ready to take a picture, Lycan," Raven glared deep into his eyes.
"Time for what?" Lycan snarled.
"Time to edit you out of the picture." Raven replied in a snide tone. Lycan growled and held her tighter. Defeated, she forced a smile for the picture. The bright flash struck them and the photo was taken.
"Let's have a look," Lycan reached for the camera. The photographer handed him the camera. "My father might be onto something. We do make for a cute couple. Though," He handed her the camera. "I could deal without the attitude."
Raven's eyes lingered on the photo. There's no denying it in the picture. Lycan and her made for a great match. The public would see them as the ideal couple. Even though, every bit of it was a lie. He didn't love her and she damn sure didn't love him. They were just pretending for the sake of his image as Prince. It made her sick looking at it, that fake smile on her face just mocking her. It hurt to see it, she was forcing a lie and the worst part is. She didn't have a choice. She had to play the part or she'd die.
"Well," Lycan took the camera from her. "You've yet to tell me your thoughts." He handed the camera back to the photographer. "Do we not make for a great couple?" Raven tucked her feelings away and took a deep breath.
"I'm clearly more photogenic than you are," Raven laughed, "I guess all the photo shoots I did with the band. Paid off, Except I didn't have to fake those." She went to walk away but Lycan stopped her. "What now?"
"That's right, you were famous at one time weren't you." Lycan took a seat at the bar. "Perhaps, my father isn't such a bad matchmaker after all." He ordered a drink from the bartender. Once, the bartender slid him his drink. He casually drank from it. "We both know what it's like to maintain a certain image."
"No, it's different." Raven crossed her arms. " You try to maintain this asshole facade to please your father. It's all about being the son your father wants you to be. I never tried to be anything but myself and I didn't much care what anyone thought." She chuckled. "You know what," She laughed. "I think that's why I get on your nerves." She pointed out. "I'm strong enough to do something you can't and I bet that pisses you off." She smirked. "I'm right aren't I?"
"Perhaps a little," Lycan allowed. "The werewolves are counting on me to be this strong admirable leader. I have to be in order to make them confident about the upcoming war. My father expects me to take his place should he die. I can't afford to be myself." He took a drink. "I've got too many people depending on me to be someone else. That person is," His eyes lingered on his father. "I think you get the picture."
"You're not your father," Raven took a seat next to him. "I think you'd accomplish a hell of a lot more if you stop trying to be someone you're not." She glanced over at him. "Tell me something, why is it so important for you to have your father's recognition?" She asked but he remained silent. "I mean come on," She laughed. "You're doing this all for him. He told you to marry me so you're doing it. I'm sure that's not the only thing he's told you to do." She let out a deep sigh. "I'm pretty sure, you've been doing everything he's told you since the day you were born. Obedient Son till the end, is that it?" She laughed. "I mean, when's the last time you made a decision for yourself?"
"I don't need this," Lycan chugged his drink. "At least not from you. My father knows what's best for me and all of the werewolves. He's their king and I'm his son. It's my duty to follow in his image. That is why he adopted me in the first place. Without my father, I'm nothing so I will honor his wishes even if it goes against my own." He set his empty glass down. "I was wrong," He got out of his seat. "We are different."
"Just remember your father is the reason," Raven walked up to him "We're both stuck playing pretend." She patted him on the shoulder. "It's okay, I'm sure he knows what's best for you." She added her voice shrouded in sarcasm. "Now if you'll excuse me, there's a photo I'd very much like to see." She walked over to Claire and Jay who just came through the doors. "Picture," She yelled.
"What no," Claire chuckled. "I don't do pictures." Raven walked over to her sister and put her arm on her shoulder.
"Come on," Raven walked her sister over to the photographer. "This is the first time I've actually seen you have a boyfriend." She pointed out. "You have to take a picture with him." Claire shook her head. "Oh come on, please." She begged. "It's just one picture."
"Forget it, " Claire pushed her away. "I'm not taking a picture with Jay. Besides," She shrugged. "He's not my boyfriend. I owed him a date and he cashed in on it. That's all this is." She pointed out. "So, no pictures."
"Not even if I were to ask you," Jay pulled her to his chest. "Cashed in or not, this is still my first date and I'm lucky enough to have you as my date. So, why not for my sake let me have one picture with you to remember the moment." He ran his fingers through her hair. "Please?" His dark amber eyes shined like gemstones. His head tilted slightly to the left and his lip curled. It had to be the cutest face. Raven has ever seen any guy make. It was almost like he was a cute puppy begging for a treat. How could anyone say no to that?
"No fair, you're using the puppy face on me and it's working." Claire kept trying to look away. He was just so cute. Raven knew Claire wasn't going to be able to resist the face. "Okay, one picture, you get one picture." She poked his chest. Jay grinned and kissed her cheek. "It has to be a silly one otherwise I'm out."
"Is there any other way to take a picture?" Jay grabbed Claire's hand and took her to the photographer. "On three," Claire nodded. "One, two," He chuckled. "Three," The bright light struck them. Jay stuck his tongue out doing some sort of rocker pose. Claire followed suit with bull horns and head banging. "See we both had the same idea," Jay smiled at his photo. "Rock concert. Though, um, we'd have some great babies."
"Babies," Claire coughed. "Did he just say babies?" Raven replied with a nod. "Okay no, that is too far Jay. No babies, we are not talking about babies right now." She walked to her sister's side. "That is one roller coaster, I'm not ready to ride yet."
"I don't know," Jay put his hands in his pockets. "I hear the roller coaster part can be fun." He kissed her cheek. Jayson and Alejandro came through the doors once they did. Lycan gathered the entire Nightshade pack for a pack photo.
Alejandro being the tallest. He stood in the back of the photo. Jayson stood in front of him to the right. Jay stood to the left. Lycan stood in between them. Raven took her spot next to Lycan standing at his right. Claire stood to his left. The flash struck and all of them smiled except Alejandro which was to be expected.
"Damn, Raven," Jayson checked the photo. "There's no denying it, you've got to be the hottest girl in our pack. If you and Lycan ever break up, I call dibs."
"And," Lycan took the camera from him. "Just like that." He squeezed tightly onto the back of Jayson's neck. He whimpered in pain as he was brought over to Alejandro. "Take care of it," Alejandro flicked Jayson in the nose.
"Ou, that hurt," Jayson held his nose. "Did you really have to flick me on the nose?" Alejandro nodded. "That's it, I'm out of here. It's time for this guy," He pointed at himself. "To find out just how many girls he can convince to join him for a night of-," He grinned. "I think you get the picture." He walked over to a group of ladies.
"I swear my brother has a one-track mind," Jay groaned. "Care to join me on the dance floor?" He held his hand out to Claire. She took his hand letting him lead her to the dance floor. Lycan took Raven's hand.
"Come," Lycan took Raven's hand. "It's time for me to introduce you to my father and some other werewolves. " She let out a sigh letting him take her with him. Of course, she knew his intentions were to show her off. That's what this ball was all about for him. It was just a chance for him to show her off. She was nothing more than a prize. She'd smile play the part but inside she was screaming.
"Greetings, father," Lycan lips formed a slight smile. "I believe it's time I properly introduced you to my bride-to-be." He motioned towards her. Once those words left his mouth, the wolves stopped and stared at her. They immediately rushed over all of them eager to hear more about her, their new princess.
"Hello, everyone, I'd like you all to meet Raven." Lycan stepped aside letting the crowd have a good look at her. "She's quite the gem don't you think? Easy on the eyes and," He put his hand over his lips. "She can't keep her hands off me." He whispered. "I'm surprised I haven't gotten her pregnant yet."
"Excuse me," Raven glared at him.
"Not now dear, can't you see we're talking." Lycan laughed as the one of the guys told a joke. The entire group of wolves were applauding him for his success while he continued to destroy her reputation to boost his own.
Raven could feel her anger building as she was forced to stand there in silence. Listening as Lycan told lie after lie each one condemning her. He was a natural and they believed every bit of it. By the time this night was over, she would appear to be some hopeless fangirl that had fallen head over heels for him. She would try to speak for herself but Lycan would continue to cut her off. It was infuriating, she wanted to scream till her lungs burst. She couldn't take this anymore, she had to be somewhere else.
"Dear, I'm actually quite thirsty," Raven faked a smile. "Would you mind if I left to get a drink?"
"Not at all, while you're at it get me one." Lycan kissed her cheek. She wiped it off and walked away to get a glass of punch. The second she turned around she felt his daring hand slap her hard on the ass. That bastard, she's going to-. Raven growled. She tightened her right hand into a fist trying her best to subdue her anger. Endure it, he's not worth it. She attacks him, he kills her, so just endure it. "See," Lycan hitched a laugh. "She's already got the makings of a great wife." The group of guys laughed. "Sweetheart, my drink, go and get it." He added in a snobby tone. "Perhaps, she still needs work."
"Bastard," Raven spoke under her breath. She tried her best to ignore the laughter as Lycan continued with his storytelling. Packing on lie after lie, she couldn't help but be furious at him. Every part of her wanted to kill him.
"Keep it together," Raven took a deep breath. "I just need to deal with him until the ball is over." She poured two cups of fruit punch. She rejoined the crowd just as she was about to give Lycan his glass. She made a point to accidently spill his drink on his expensive suit. "Oh, I'm so sorry," She apologized. "It's these heels, they snagged my dress and-," She grabbed a napkin dabbing at the spill patting at his chest frantically to purposely annoy him. "Oh dear, it looks so bad, I hope I didn't ruin your suit."
"It's fine," Lycan yelled. "Just get away from me." He pushed her back. "I'll deal with the spill myself." He snatched the napkin from her. "Why don't you go and make yourself useful and fetch me another napkin." He ordered. "I'd hate to ask you for another drink seeing as you clearly lack the intelligence to do it properly." He dabbed at his shirt. "Stupid, bitch," Raven took deep breath choosing to ignore his insult. She walked over to a nearby table to retrieve a napkin for Lycan. She started to head back to him but instead.
Raven sat at the table enjoying the view. From here, she could watch as her sister slow- danced with Jay. The two of them were having so much fun together. She was happy that at least one of them would be able to enjoy this night.
"It's strange," Claire spun as Jay twirled her around. "I never would have thought that you knew how to dance. So, did you look it up on your way to the Ball or," Her navy-blue eyes stared deep into his. "Are you naturally this gifted?" Jay's lips formed a slight smirk.
"Alejandro taught me," Jay answered. "You wouldn't know this by looking at him but," He brought his lips to her ear. "He's a really good dancer." Claire glanced over at Alejandro as he sat at the bar having a few drinks.
"There's no way," Claire replied. "The man doesn't even talk and he's always so serious. I don't see him as a guy that can dance or a guy that would dance with anyone." Jay pulled her close to his chest. His feet were so light, almost as if he was gliding across the dance floor.
"Alejandro wasn't always like that," Jay's lips formed a sweet smile. "He used to enjoy dancing. I guess," He placed his hands on her hips. "There's only so much pain a person can endure before they break." He spun her, she brought her lips close to his.
"So, tell me," Claire stared deep into his dark amber eyes. "What happened to make Alejandro the way he is? I mean, surely you know after all he's like a father to you." Jay turned his head. "It's not like, he's going to tell me so, why don't you?"
"I would but," Jay ran his fingers through her hair. "That's not my story to tell." He poked her nose. "I'm thirsty, I'm going to get something to drink," He pointed toward the punch bowl. "Do you want anything?" Claire shook her head. "Okay, I'll be right back." He put his hands in his pockets walking toward the punch bowl.
The moment Jay left, Claire felt a warm hand on her shoulder. She jumped, turning to the face of the person that startled her. "J-Jayson, it's only you," She let out a sigh of relief. "You probably shouldn't be sneaking up on people like that." Claire pointed out. "You really scared me." She placed her hand on her chest. "You came out of nowhere." She took another deep breath to calm her nerves.
"Dance with me," Jayson held his hand out to her. "Don't worry, I have no interest in stealing you from my brother. I just want to talk," Claire took his hand allowing him to dance with her. "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with my brother. You were digging for answers." He pulled her to his chest. "Let me make this perfectly clear," He glared into her eyes. "Our past is none of your business." Claire pulled herself free of his grip. "If I catch you trying to dig up answers again." He warned. "We're going to have problems."
"I'm back," Jay walked over to them. "Jayson, what's going on?" His eyes shifted from his brother to Claire. "Why are you dancing with my date?" He questioned. "Claire, is everything okay?" She went to speak but Jayson cut her off.
"It's nothing," Jayson answered. "I was just telling Claire about this girl I met earlier." He put his hands in his pockets. "She might still be around here, I'm going to go look for her." He walked past his brother, his eyes forming a glare at him. Jay lowered his head, Claire watched as his lips mimed the words "I'm sorry.". He roughly bumped Jay's shoulder with his as he walked away.
"Sorry about that," Jay rubbed his shoulder. "My brother can be a bit," He rubbed the back of his neck. "Overprotective sometimes." He held his hand out to her. "Shall we continue our dance?" Claire took his hand. It's strange, she's a member of the notorious pack Nightshade but, for the first time. She felt like an outsider…
The dance floor was full of people. There were couples all gathered around dancing. Angel could see Ziek and Selene from a distance also on the dance floor. The two of them were laughing, having a great time. As for him, he was having trouble containing Blaire's need to ruin the Lunar Ball by fucking on the dance floor. She kept kissing him on the neck and reaching for his belt every time she did. He'd swat her hands away.
"Blaire, stop," Angel whispered. He could feel her lips kissing at his tender neck. Her hands were grabbing at his sides. She dropped to her knees and started to loosen his belt. "I said enough," He grabbed her arms and forced her to stand up. "This isn't the time or place for that, I'm not letting you suck me off on the dance floor."
"You'd be so lucky," Blaire laughed. "So what are we supposed to do then Angel?" She argued. "This whole ball is just a way for Werewolves to insult us with yet another celebration for their kind. They already celebrate the Harvest Festival now they get the Lunar Ball too. This is ridiculous, where's our event?" She complained. "I say, we ruin their event and fuck right here in front of everyone." She brought her lips close to his. "They want to insult us, I say, we insult them right back."
"I don't think they intend to insult us," Angel argued. "Even if they are. Two wrongs, don't make a right. We don't need to sink to their level." Blaire pressed her lips against his. He pulled away. "Blaire, stop this right now." She went to reach for his belt. Angel was prepared to grab her arm and twist it. Before he could Lord Alexander caught her shoulder and spun her around in order to face him.
"Daughter," Lord Alexander glared at her. "I advise you to listen to your future husband." Blaire's eyes formed an angry glare at her father. "You are my daughter, and this is a formal event. I will not have you tarnishing our reputation." She bit her lip. "I would hate to have to correct your behavior."
"As you wish father," Blaire replied in a snide tone. "So, what brings you here?" She questioned. "It's not like you to actually check on your daughter. Shouldn't you be conversing with Scythe or something?"
"I came here to speak with Angel," Lord Alexander motioned toward him. "Care to join me at the bar?" He asked. "We have much to discuss," Angel replied with a simple nod, Blaire went to follow them. "Daughter, your presence is not required."
"Why not," Blaire crossed her arms. "He is my fiancée, father. Anywhere he goes, I go, so if you need to speak with him. Then, you'll need to speak with me as well." She challenged, Lord Alexander's eyes formed an angry glare.
"This conversation does not concern you." Lord Alexander spoke bluntly. "Now you will do as you are told and leave us be." He walked up to her. "Or do I need to remind you of what happens when you disobey me." Blaire stepped back. "As I thought," He glanced over at Angel. "A word, Angel, if you will." He followed Lord Alexander to the bar taking a seat beside him.
"What did you want to talk to me about?" Angel watched as the bartender slid them both a complimentary drink. "This isn't one of those, warning speeches about me dating your daughter is it? I think it's a bit too late for that." He took a sip of his drink. Lord Alexander laughed slightly.
"No, there is no need for that." Lord Alexander took a drink from his glass. "Angel, you are the first of Blaire's many suitors to make it this far." He set his drink down. "Most would be dead by now. I never thought I would see my daughter marry giving how easy it is for her to get bored." He took another drink. "I must say, compared to the others who I've had the privilege-," He spoke, his voice shrouded in sarcasm. "Of meeting. You are the first one, she's chosen that I like."
"I appreciate that," Angel took a sip from his drink. "Though, I doubt you brought me here for a simple father, son, bonding moment." He set his drink down. "As great as that sounds, we do need to discuss what happens after Blaire and I get married." Lord Alexander's lips formed a proud smirk.
"Yes, which is why I brought you here." Lord Alexander slid his drink over to the bartender for a refill. "Once you and my daughter get married. You will no longer be the commander of my elite army. Instead, you'll be promoted to General. Which leads to the next order of business," He turned to face Angel.
"Finding a commander to take my place," Angel finished. This was it, his chance to keep his promise to Selene. It has always been her dream to be commander. He told her the day he arrived as commander that he would make her the next commander. She more than deserved it, now, he could fulfill his promise to her. "Are you looking for recommendations?" He set his empty glass to the side.
"I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter." Lord Alexander allowed. "Who do you think is worthy of taking your place?" Of course, Angel wanted to jump out and say Selene but she wasn't the only person qualified to fulfill the role. It would be wrong to recommend her and only her. He had to take everyone into account here.
"My first thought for recommendation is Selene," Angel answered. "She has more than shown that she is ready to take my place. She cares about the team and will do what is best for them. The only flaw I see in her," He glanced over at Selene as she danced with Ziek. "She's afraid to show any sign of vulnerability. She doesn't like to depend on others and being a commander. It's important that you are able to rely on your team." He turned his attention to Lord Alexander. "I think all she needs is a chance to prove herself."
"Well, Selene would be a good fit for the position." Lord Alexander acknowledged. "She's been wanting it for some time now. But it's as you said, she has her flaws and it's those flaws that trouble me." He stated. "You say, she just needs a chance to prove herself, what did you have in mind when you said that?"
"To be honest," Angel whispered. "In my team, there are several candidates. Each deserving a shot at being commander. The only ones I can without a doubt cross out are Jayden and Ziek. The reason being," He paused. "Jayden's only been a vampire for a couple of days. As for Ziek, he may be able to be commander but. The fact is, he doesn't want to be commander. He wouldn't do that to Selene." He explained. "Now that brings me to Fate, I haven't seen him in actual combat yet. I can't say for sure if he's commander material or not." He pointed out. "So, I was thinking." He slid his drink over for a refill. "We could hold some kind of tournament in order to decide who gets to be commander." He took a drink from his glass. "I know it's a bit different from what you're used to but, it's the only fair way to do it."
"I will take it into consideration," Lord Alexander set his empty glass down. "The competition should be starting soon. Thank you for your time, Angel." He rose to his feet heading toward the large stage set at the front of the ball room.
"I better get back to," Before Angel could finish his sentence. He was snatched by the arm by Blaire. "Let me guess, you're curious to know what your father wanted." The frustration in her eyes told him all he needed to know. She jerked him by the arm, taking him to the dance floor.
"What did he want?" Blaire asked. "He's never just pulled my date aside like that." She punched his arm. "So, enough stalling, tell me what he wanted from you. Tell me or I'll-," She created a sword from diamond.
"There's no need for that," Angel lowered her blade from his neck. "Your father just informed me that I'm going to be promoted to General. Which means that the commander position is open." The sword in Blaire's hand disappeared. "He asked from my recommendation, I recommended Selene."
"You what," Blaire glared into his eyes. "You dare go behind my back and choose my commander." She pointed at herself. "I am the one who chooses the commander, it has always been my choice." She argued. "Selene," Blaire laughed. "You recommended her, no, that will never happen."
"Why not," Angel questioned. "Selene is more than qualified to do the job. This is everything she's ever wanted. As her friend, you should be happy for her." He pointed out. "You claim to be her friend so why aren't you acting like it?"
"Don't criticize me," Blaire scolded. "You're the one who made the wrong decision by suggesting Selene. It is obvious that Ziek should be commander." That bitch, Angel's gleamed with anger. To even recommend him would be wrong. Selene is finally in a relationship willing to be vulnerable. The first course of action Blaire wants to take is to break that up. Why would she do that to Selene?
"Ziek," Angel laughed. "That's who you want as commander." He let out a deep sigh. "Of course, that's what you want. Selene is finally in a good place and you want to fuck that up. Why? Because you can't stand to see her happy." He spoke bluntly. "The moment you say Ziek's name in the same context as Commander. It will ruin any chance they had at being in a relationship together."
"So, what if it does," Blaire countered. "When they do break up. Selene will come crawling to me because I'm her friend." She added. "While you're gone being General," She brought her lips to his ear. "I can fuck Ziek all I want." Her lips formed a daring smile. "Selene won't care after I make him commander."
"You disgust me," Angel glared into her eyes. "It's not that I care if you cheat on me. For me to care," He grinned. "I'd have to have feelings for you but," He shrugged. "I don't and you know something," He brought his lips to her ear. "I never will." Angel whispered. Blaire's eyes filled with rage. She struck him with a powerful slap to the face leaving a stinging red mark on his cheek.
"You seem to forget," Blaire glared at him. "You belong to me." Angel rubbed the red mark on his face. "I thought what I did to you in that cage clarified that." He glared deep into her eyes. "One way or another," She smirked. "I will break you." She walked toward the bar to get a drink.
