Fairy Tail: The Faint Smile in Earthland

Chapter 21: Chapter 21 - The Murmurs Beneath Magnolia

The dawn mist curled lazily over Magnolia's rooftops as the city stirred to life. Merchants opened their stalls. Bakeries filled the air with warm scents. Guild banners fluttered softly in the early breeze. Magnolia remained vibrant—its streets alive, its people oblivious.

But beneath the cheerful routine, Teresa felt the deeper undercurrent shifting.

The most recent ruins had confirmed it.

What once seemed like isolated Pre-Era anomalies were now growing in frequency—and complexity. Every mission exposed further layers of ancient corruption. The Council called them "forgotten experiments." Teresa saw something else.

A pattern.

Someone—or several factions—had not only continued forbidden research but had learned to conceal it. The surface world carried on, while new abominations quietly stirred in the shadows.

Teresa moved silently along the cobbled streets, a familiar part of Magnolia's daily rhythm now. Most citizens recognized her pale blond hair and her black Claymore tunic with its high collar and sleeveless design.

Even without her armor, no one mistook her for defenseless.

The whispers still followed her. Not from fear anymore, but from curiosity. She remained an enigma—a lone hunter under Fairy Tail's banner. Accepted, but never familiar.

Her silver eyes scanned the crowds with subtle calculation. Each heartbeat, each distant conversation registered as background noise, filtered effortlessly by her senses. She walked without drawing attention—but she was always watching.

Ahead, the Fairy Tail guild hall rose into view, its heavy doors wide open.

Inside, the familiar chaos was already unfolding.

"Morning, Teresa!" Max called from behind the bar.

"Good morning," she replied softly.

Wakaba and Reedus sat in the corner. Reedus looked up from his sketchpad, nodding politely, while Wakaba puffed his pipe with that same quiet blend of curiosity and caution.

Romeo rushed over as she crossed the hall. "Teresa! You're back from the mountains!"

"Yes." Her voice remained even. "The contract is fulfilled."

"Did you fight anything dangerous?"

She considered briefly. "Yes."

Romeo's eyes widened. "Like what?"

"Constructed hybrids," she answered calmly. "Poachers targeting forbidden artifacts."

Macao approached, sighing wearily. "You make it sound routine."

"For me, it is."

Macao chuckled. "Come. Let's sit. We have updates."

They moved toward a quieter corner table as the usual guild bustle continued around them—Jet and Droy debated routes by the map wall, Kinana polished glasses behind the bar, and Warren reviewed new contracts.

Macao laid several parchments on the table.

"More disturbances," he said. "Small settlements reporting strange disappearances. Caravans vanishing. Unexplained sightings. This isn't just random monster activity."

Warren leaned in, lowering his voice. "We've been tracking rumors of an underground network forming—a system of smugglers trading in forbidden artifacts. Rogue mages moving between territories, carefully staying out of Council jurisdiction."

"It's spreading," Macao added. "And fast."

Teresa studied the reports. The patterns were clear now.

"A coordinated network operating beneath guild oversight," she said.

Macao nodded. "Exactly. Every time we pressure one cell, another surfaces elsewhere."

"They're disciplined," Warren said. "They rely on information control. Secrecy. And that means they're listening in towns like Magnolia too."

Teresa's silver gaze narrowed. "Information brokers. Whispered networks."

"Someone's pulling strings from the shadows," Macao confirmed. "And that artifact you escorted in the mountains? Just one shipment among many."

Teresa folded her hands on the table. "Has the Council responded?"

"They're aware something's happening," Warren said, voice tight, "but they're focused on public threats. As long as these trades avoid open conflict, the Council delays action."

Teresa's mind sharpened. The Council's habit of hesitating until danger fully surfaced was familiar. Political self-preservation.

Macao's expression hardened. "Which leaves it to us."

"And to me," Teresa added.

Reedus approached, carefully carrying his sketchpad. "If you have a moment, Teresa. I've updated the armor studies. May I?"

She nodded.

Reedus unfolded a meticulous rendering—her full Claymore armor captured in flawless detail. The segmented plating, the flowing cloak, the heavy blade—all drawn with perfect symmetry.

"Accurate," Teresa said softly.

Reedus beamed at the rare praise. "Your equipment's minimal compared to other Requip users, but it's elegant. I wanted to capture that balance."

"Function surpasses spectacle," Teresa replied. "Always."

Wakaba smirked. "You still manage to stand out, though."

The faintest trace of a smile touched her lips.

Macao leaned forward, lowering his voice again. "There's more. Rumors say the network is using guild-adjacent informants. Brokers embedded near neutral towns. Possibly even near Magnolia."

"Potential leaks," Warren said. "Not necessarily within Fairy Tail itself, but close."

Teresa stood slowly. "Then I will observe."

"Be careful," Macao warned. "These people aren't reckless. They've survived by being invisible."

"Nothing is invisible," Teresa replied. "Only hidden."

With silent precision, She turned and departed the hall.

The hunt, once again, had begun.
