Chapter 160: Chapter 160 - A Blade’s First Step
📍 Location: Fairy Tail Guild Hall
📅 Early June, X791
The morning sun rolled across Magnolia in soft waves, painting rooftops with golden light. Inside the Fairy Tail guild hall, everything felt warmer. The chaos of reunion had settled into something steadier — a peaceful hum of voices, laughter, and footsteps that made the building feel alive again.
Romeo Conbolt stood at the center of it all, calm and still. A sleek, black-edged flame sword rested against his back, its weight familiar. He wore a new lightweight jacket, charcoal gray with red trim — a gift from Macao — over fitted black pants. His sleeves were pushed up, showing the burn scars and calluses that marked his growth.
From a bench nearby, Natsu watched him with a lazy grin. "Whoa, look at you. All serious now, huh?"
Gray took a sip from his glass and smirked. "He stopped lighting candles and started cutting stone."
Romeo gave no response at first. He shut his eyes, letting his breath settle. He could still hear Teresa's voice from old sparring sessions — cold, precise, and unrelenting. Strike only when it matters. Cut with purpose, or don't draw at all.
"I'm not the same kid," Romeo said quietly. When he opened his eyes, a faint violet glow traced the edge of his gaze. "I learned how to burn without losing control. How to fight like a blade, not a wildfire."
Natsu laughed, pounding the table. "You sound like a sword poet now! But come on — fire's gotta roar!"
Romeo smiled, just slightly. "Roaring fire gets noticed. Quiet fire finishes the job."
Gray nearly choked on his drink. "He's got you, flame-brain."
Across the room, Lucy glanced up from her notebook. Her eyes lingered on Romeo.
"Your fire feels different now," she said softly. "It's not just heat. It's focused. It listens."
Romeo nodded. "That's what Teresa taught me. Fire's not just power. It's choice."
Happy flew past with a fish in his paws. "Aye! He's getting all deep and wise!"
📍 Near the Mission Board
Jet and Droy hovered near the job board, whispering like kids planning something they probably shouldn't.
Levy crossed her arms behind them. "You two gonna stare at the paper all day or take a job?"
Droy nearly tripped over himself. "It's called preparation! We're being strategic!"
Jet nodded quickly. "Yeah! Gotta stay sharp now — Romeo's turning into a monster!"
Romeo walked over, calm and casual. "If you want, I can run some drills with you later."
Both Jet and Droy blinked like they'd just been offered training with Erza.
Levy laughed behind her hand. "You're sounding more like a teacher than a student."
Romeo shrugged. "Teaching helps me remember what I've learned."
She smiled gently. "You remind me of Gajeel now — a tough front, but real loyalty underneath."
Romeo blushed and looked away. "Don't say that. Gajeel would flatten me."
📍 At the Bar
Macao leaned on the counter, watching with quiet pride.
"Kid's got an edge now," Wakaba muttered, blowing smoke. "Makes me feel ancient."
Macao nodded slowly. "He's more than just what Teresa taught him. He's made something of his own."
"You gave him space," Wakaba added. "That counts."
Macao smiled faintly. "Yeah. But walking alone — that's the hardest part."
📍 Guild Center
Lisanna finished braiding Asuka's hair while Elfman struck a proud pose.
"Romeo's sword swings — pure manliness!"
Lisanna rolled her eyes. "How about graceful?"
Elfman looked offended. "Bah! Grace is just fancy manliness!"
Asuka clapped. "Go sword guy!"
📍 Mission Board — Later
Lucy approached Romeo, holding a parchment. "We got a new one. Nearby ruins. Strange magical activity. It could be good for testing your new flame style."
Romeo nodded after a pause. "I'm in. Time to see what this fire can do."
Natsu shot up. "Oh! Ruins usually mean monsters or cool things to smash. I'm coming too!"
Happy zipped after him. "And fish!"
Gray groaned, pushing off the bar. "Fantastic. Another headache waiting to happen."
Romeo looked toward the high windows, where the breeze lifted the curtain. For a second, he felt like someone was watching.
Teresa… I'll prove it. I'm ready now.
📍 Guild Entrance
The team gathered by the doors, voices loud with excitement. Romeo adjusted his sword one last time, then looked back.
Macao stood watching. Tables buzzed with life. The place that raised him was whole again.
Romeo stepped outside.
The sun caught the edge of his sword and made it glow.
This wasn't the start of someone chasing after others anymore. This was a new path — his own.
He didn't just carry fire.
He carried intention.
He made a choice.
And when the shadows returned — he'd be ready to cut through them.
