Chapter 139: Chapter 139 - Those Who Return to Silence
Date: September X789 β Evening
Location: Fiore β Magnolia Outskirts, Returning Road
π Forest Path β Twilight
The forest path curved gently beneath their boots, each step soft against moss and fallen leaves. The sun dipped behind the hills, painting the sky in shades of orange and violet. Fireflies began to rise from the ground, glowing like tiny lanterns lighting the road home.
Romeo walked a few steps ahead, his cloak catching the evening breeze. The sword on his back no longer felt like a burden. His movements were calm and steady, like the flame inside him had finally fit.
Teresa followed just behind, her eyes shifting between the trees and Romeo's silhouette. There was something new in her gaze β not just watchful, but quietly proud.
Romeo slowed and looked back at her, a small grin tugging at his lips.
"You're quieter than usual," he said with a hint of teasing.
Teresa tilted her head slightly. "Silence doesn't mean emptiness," she replied. "Sometimes, it's just where the echo settles before it becomes something."
Romeo chuckled and shook his head. "You always talk like you're reading from a poem or solving a riddle."
She gave a faint smile, soft and fleeting. "Maybe it's both."
π Roadside Rest
They came to an old shrine by the roadside β just a stone pillar surrounded by wildflowers and a few faded prayer strips flapping in the breeze. Teresa stopped and placed her hand gently on the stone.
Romeo watched her. "Do you... Pray?" he asked.
She didn't answer right away. Her fingers traced a faded carving β a single word: safe return.
"I don't use words to pray," she said at last. "I just listen. The echoes here are soft⦠left behind by those who waited for someone to come home."
Romeo looked down, something catching in his chest. "Like my mom and dad⦠waiting for me after every job."
Teresa nodded. "Yes. And like your echo⦠waiting for you to return with it."
He looked up, surprised. But before he could speak, she walked past him, her cloak brushing lightly against his arm.
π Twilight Road β Nearing Magnolia
The trees opened up, revealing the glow of Magnolia in the distance. Lanterns flickered like stars waiting to be gathered. Romeo picked up his pace, drawn toward the light and the sound of home.
Teresa stayed beside him, her steps quiet, her sword at her side like it belonged there β no longer a weight, but a part of her.
"Do you think they'll understand?" Romeo asked. "Everything we saw β the labyrinth, the hybrids?"
Teresa thought for a moment.
"They'll understand enough," she said. "But it's not their job to carry your echo. That's yours alone."
Romeo nodded slowly. "Then I'll show them. With how I walk. With my flame."
π Magnolia Gates
As they reached the gates, one of the guards waved, his face lighting up.
"Romeo! Miss Teresa! You're back!"
Romeo laughed softly and waved back. "It's good to be home," he said.
Teresa nodded in greeting but didn't slow down. Her eyes were already scanning the city ahead.
They stepped onto Magnolia's main road, where lanterns were being lit for the harvest festival. Kids ran between the booths, laughing and swinging wooden swords.
Romeo paused, watching a little girl spin in circles, sword in hand, before falling in a fit of giggles. For a moment, he saw himself before the echoes, before the battles.
A light touch on his shoulder brought him back. Teresa stood beside him, her gaze soft.
"Carry forward," she said gently.
Romeo smiled and nodded.
π Guild Hall Entrance
They climbed the steps to the Fairy Tail guild hall. Music spilled from the windows, along with the scent of food. The door swung open, and there was Kinana, holding a tray.
"Romeo!" she gasped, eyes bright. "You're safe!"
Romeo stepped up and helped her steady the tray, smiling. "We're home," he said, his voice warm and low.
She set the tray aside and hugged him. At first, he stood stiffly β then slowly, he returned the hug, resting his arms around her.
π Inside the Guild
The guild quickly filled with voices and laughter. Max clapped Romeo on the back so hard he nearly stumbled. Laki rushed over to examine Teresa's armor, fussing over every scratch.
Macao came last, walking over with a tired but familiar grin. He looked Romeo over carefully.
"You've changed," he said.
Romeo looked him in the eye and stood a little straighter. "I have. But I'm still me."
Macao's smile deepened. He nodded and pulled Romeo into a quick, strong hug.
Later, as the guild buzzed around them, Teresa leaned against a beam in a quiet corner. Romeo found his way to her, slipping past the crowd.
For a while, they didn't speak. They just stood side by side, letting the joy of the room wrap around them like a soft blanket.
Finally, Romeo turned. "Thank you," he said quietly. "For everything."
Teresa looked at him, really looked β not through him, but into him.
"You made your path," she said gently. "I just helped you hear it."
Romeo smiled. It wasn't big, but it was honest. "Will you keep walking with me?"
She paused, then nodded. Her small smile warmed the space between them.
π Final Scene β Guild Hall Window
Outside, the lanterns glowed brighter against the darkening sky. Music rose and fell like waves in the distance.
Teresa turned her eyes toward the window, watching the lights flicker. Her reflection mixed with the lantern's glow.
"Echo or cut," she whispered. "Always both."
And in that moment β standing beside Romeo, surrounded by warmth β Teresa felt something shift.
For the first time since arriving in Earthland, she wasn't just a blade in the shadows...
She was a voice, part of the world she once tried to shut out.
