Extra's Fate

Chapter 34: Dangerous

Roar…

The mighty roar of a wyvern shook the entire valley, sending tremors through the ground and making students who heard it cower in fear.

Usually, Wyverns are mid tier monsters and it was understandable that the youth wanted nothing to do with such beings.

They had no way of knowing that it was a shapeshifter who had only taken the form of one to fight two boneheads who were standing in its way.

Grrr…

A guttural growl rumbled from the creature as it shook its scaly head, trying to get used to its new form.

Even whilst transforming, its beady eyes had never left a petite woman, holding a shining spear.

She was dangerous…

She was the reason why it had taken on this wyvern form in the first place.

Her weapon, made completely out of light, had a strange property to scorch and burn the mist that made up the monster.

If she was eliminated, this battle was basically over.

Tap…

Taking a step towards her, the shapeshifter didn't even bother looking at the dark-haired youth who was kneeling on the ground not too far away.

Just a few minutes ago, he was barely able to breathe after the monster's tail hit him directly in the chest and within such a short timeframe nothing had changed.

He was still vomiting blood, clutching his ribs.

He was harmless…

He was out of the fight…

That's at least what the shapeshifter thought at first.

The monster completely failed to notice a bloody smile that flashed across the youth's face as it turned its back towards him.

It only understood that something was wrong when it noticed that the petite woman wasn't staring at him anymore, but rather at the wounded boy's location.

Slightly shifting its head, the creature tried to catch a glimpse of the youth, but he was no longer there.

Only a puddle of blood remained on the ground.

"Where are you looking?"

Suddenly, a solemn voice rang out from the shapeshifter's right.

Slightly startled, it immediately turned its head to the source of the sound, only to see a small tree stump, standing just a few feet away.

"What a dumb being, do you think I am a sapling?"

This time the voice came from the left.

Turning its head in the sound's direction, the wyvern, once again, saw nothing.

Grrr…

Somehow, the monster felt as if it was toyed with.

Lifting its massive jaws it was about to release another deafening roar, when suddenly pain akin to a needle assaulted one of its legs, more specifically, the knee.

Before it could even react, the other leg was also struck.

At first, nothing happened, but then, all sensation in the legs vanished and the massive creature buckled to the ground, only kept upright by its enormous wings.

Glancing at its non-responsive limbs, the shapeshifter noticed strange slashes across the joints, which seemed to be the source of the immobilizing pain.

Furious, it whipped its head around trying to locate the dark-haired boy who presumably caused this only to find him nowhere in sight.

The monster didn't even have time to rest as the girl woke up from her stupor and rushed towards it.

Without legs, the wyvern was quite helpless against most of her attacks.

Not being able to move proved quite costly as most of the attacks thrown at it landed, heavily wounding its body.

At some point the shapeshifter even abandoned trying to attack the petite girl, cowering behind its scaly wings, trying to survive until its leg injuries healed.

However, even that failed when that dark-haired youth appeared once again and thrusted his sword into one of the shapeshifter's eyes and made it momentarily let go of its defensive stance, allowing some of the girl's devastating strikes to land, severely wounding the wyvern even further.

In a last-ditch effort, the creature tried to breathe fire at the girl, but before it could release its deadly breath, a sword pierced its lower jaw, forcing the monster to turn its head towards the sky and completely miss the target.

Shriekkkkkk…

The wounded wyvern thrashed and writhed in agony, its once-fearsome roar reduced to a pitiful, rasping wheeze as the relentless barrage of attacks continued.

The girl delivered the attacks that hurt the most, however, if the creature tried to attack her, the dark-haired youth swiftly swooped in, masterfully striking with precision, neutralizing its attempts at counterattack.

As its legs began to heal, the shapeshifter felt a flicker of hope.

Summoning every ounce of strength, it flapped its enormous wings, propelling itself into the air. The ground rapidly receded beneath it and for a brief moment, it believed it had escaped.

But before it could fly too far away, a voice, calm and resolute, echoed from its back.

"Where are you going?"

Panic surged through the creature as it twisted its long neck, desperately trying to see the source.

The last thing it saw before plummeting to the ground was the dark-haired boy, his eyes cold and determined, plunging his sword between its scales near the wing joint.

In an instant, all sensation in its wing vanished.

The massive wyvern, now crippled once more, lost control and tumbled from the sky.

The wind howled past its ears and the ground rushed up to meet it with terrifying speed.

Thud…

With a thunderous crash, the shapeshifter hit the valley floor.

Dust and debris exploded outward, forming a thick cloud that shrouded the scene. Its once-mighty body lay sprawled and broken, scales shattered and wings bent at unnatural angles.

The creature groaned, a pitiful, low sound that reverberated through the air. It tried to move, to muster some last ounce of defiance, but its strength had ebbed away, leaving it powerless and defeated.

Tilting its head slightly, it tried to look around to see if the boy had survived, but a thick cloud of dust was obstructing its eye's vision.

A second passed, then a few, hope began to ignite in the creature's mind, but before it could entertain the notion of escaping, a silhouette appeared in the dust.

"Still alive, huh?"
