Chapter 23: Critical Stage
As Rentaro navigated through the city he tried understanding what happened a few seconds ago. For a moment he felt like he had entered a trance as his mind went blank.
'I see..' He spoke softly within his thoughts, with each dangerous circumstances he found himself in. The system automatically activated his dormant skills in order to save him.
"How did you kill that beast so quickly?" Daichi let out his confusion as he ran behind Rentaro with Lucy at his side.
Aside from Lucy, they both lacked experience, even with their Soul Types as an advantage. He was mesmerized, to say the least; he took down two E-rank beasts in just ten minutes, whereas Rentaro killed something superior to that in only a minute.
"I thought you just had only one technique, so you lied to me?" Lucy's words sent a chill down his spine. Indeed he only had one ability, but it was no longer the same technique he showed during the combat training.
"Okay let's just take it easy, I'm pretty sure I mentioned I have just one technique and that's what I used to defeat it." He only left them even more confused.
'If not for the training I did earlier I really would have been in trouble.' Rentaro mumbled within his thoughts.
[30:56]
The notifications from the translucent blue screen displayed to them the stipulated time they needed to stay alive till the first stage was cleared.
"Where are you going Rentaro?" Questioned asked as they approached the entrance of the city.
"Well to them." He replied as they passed through the entrance of the city and met face to face with several humanoid beasts about 4-15 feet in height.
"Are you crazy!?" She exclaimed as dhe saw what he had led them to, their apparent doom. Several teams had already been defeated and transported back home while the others prevailed against the beasts they came in contact with.
"Not at all." He replied again, dashing forward at the beasts.
"You're crazy, but what else can we do."
With a slight chuckle, Daichi ran behind him, leaving Lucy who stood still as she watched her teammates run ahead of her.
She had no idea if this was part of some crazy plan Rentaro came up with or these commoners were truly stupid.
Rentaro extended his right palm toward the trio of humanoid beasts that loomed in his path. A crackle of electricity coursed through his arm, gathering in his palm as a radiant blue sphere of energy took shape. With a fierce determination, he unleashed his ability, [Electric Burst], and aimed the spiraling ball of electricity crashing into the ground beneath the central creature.
The burst of energy detonated, engulfing the three beasts in its blast radius. Fortunately, the two boys escaped the blast unscathed.

[You have gained 3 Soul-Essence!]
[Team Rentaro has slain a D-rank beast!]
[You have gained 2 Soul-Essence!]
[Team Rentaro has slain a E-rank beast!]
[You have gained 1 Soul-Essence!]
As the notifications from the system were displayed before Rentaro's eyes he knew he was getting closer. Daichi was left astonished after he witnessed first hand the true ability of Rentaro's Soul-Type.
"L-lightning?" He stammered, this was not the same [Electric Burst] he used earlier, but there was no time for him to be astonished by his abilities as two humanoid beast rushed him swiftly.
Daichi launched himself into the air, executing a rapid spin as he utilized a combat technique that required precise precision and momentum.
"Soul Cyclone!" His legs became a blur of motion, striking both humanoid beasts with precision and force. The whirlwind of kicks sent the creatures staggering back, their snarls drowned out by the sheer power of his kick.

"What was that?!" Rentaro exclaimed, he could follow the movements of Daichi's legs but for someone with no Soul-Type, such rapid movements shouldn't be possible.
"Soul Cyclone, it is a high speed combat technique that allows me to strike multiple enemies at once, the momentum increases the strength of my attack." He replied.
Lucy watched from behind, as stupid as the two boys were she couldn't let a bunch of commoners with a very low Soul-Type outshine a noble that fell under the C-rank Soul-Type. She considered it a disgrace.
"Huh, and you do that with your legs? What's gonna happen if you hit something you can't break?." Rentaro asked with his arms crossed.
"Better than shooting lightning from my palm knowing it's gonna kill me." Daichi replied as an argument started on which ability was more dangerous to the user.
"No, it's not, I'm surprised you didn't get your legs broken the first time you learnt that technique." In the heat of the argument, Rentaro realized that in this medieval world, electricity hadn't been discovered yet so it was pointless explaining what his abilities was.
"What was that?" Their foreheads clashed swiftly and they started staring down at each other's eyes.
"Don't leach me in with those who doesn't know how to fight." Daichi retaliated, a slight smug stretching across his face.
"And don't diss my abilities when they are more safer than yours." Rentaro replied with a smug as well.
"They are not." Daichi growled.
"They are." Rentaro growled as well, their foreheads rubbed against each other and their teeth grinned.
A powerful wave of disorienting energy shot above them barely touching their hair, they swiftly covered their eyes as they felt their senses falling apart.
As their senses stabilized, they slowly turned to their backs towards the source of the wave of energy and saw Lucy.
"Why am I the one who got stuck with two morons." She complained as she approaching them
THUD!
Hearing the thunderous crash of a massive body behind them, they quickly turned to face the source of the noise.
[Team Rentaro has Slain an B-rank beast]
Their eyes met with the dead body of a huge man beast which was right next to them. As they argued it didn't come across their minds that several beasts were present, especially a massive beast which seemed to be the to highest ranked between all the beasts.
[5:04]
The system displayed the time left for the survival stage, each moment became critical as the beasts became more aggressive the more the time elapsed. A total of 500 teams out of the 670 that entered had already been vanquished.
