Extra Babel

Chapter 3: Welcome to Babel

Tower of Babel is a post apocalyptic world that happens after a cataclysm that decimated most of the world.

The lore of the game is not very detailed, what caused the cataclysm was never mentioned. Only that all land was plagued with contamination and corruption, taking away all life with it.

Diseases spread through the land, contaminating every living being and killing it, the air became toxic, and deaths started piling up. When humanity was at the brink of falling, the Tower of Babel appeared.

An immense tower that sheltered the remaining humans. However, Babel was salvation as much as it was destruction.

Those who entered the tower became the Challengers, and were forced into mortal trials, those who couldn't finish the trials, died or suffered fates worse than death. However, those who did, gained power, tremendous and extraordinary powers.

Those who finished all the trials of Babel became Conquerors, and together they left the tower and conquered back our world, freeing it from the aberrations lurking as well as healing it from the plague that devastated it.

Now, every child dreamed of becoming like that, entering Babel and becoming a Conqueror. Unfortunately, just a few were selected to do it, and much less were able to conquer the entire tower.

Although anyone could enter Babel in the past, that changed soon after, too many people entered, and it became difficult to control everyone, and chaos followed. So, the Conquerors of that time gathered and took control of Babel's entrance.

Fortunately for me, I have already been selected, seeing the Screen is proof of that, as well as the fact that I've entered Santo.

Kaleb is already a Challenger, he managed to enter the Tower of Babel by passing the Santo's exams through the theoric exams.

Despite that, he was deemed to have no real talent to be a Challenger, but he's very smart and hardworking, so they kept him in the school.

It's very fortunate that I'm already a Challenger from Santo before entering this body. If not, I wouldn't know what to do, it would be very difficult for me as Kaleb to enter the academy otherwise.

It's all because Kaleb comes from the Underground. A place where crime and poverty reigns.

Kaleb's story is very unusual. As a Challenger and a student at Santo Academy—something truly extraordinary for someone from the Underground—he's already an outlier.

Normally, no one from below would ever be allowed to enter the Tower of Babel, let alone become a Challenger. And the idea of being accepted into Santo Academy? Almost unheard of.

The Underground is basically the lair of criminals and those forgotten about society.

Scoffing at the thought, I muttered to myself, "All the conflicts in this game... all of them happened because of that tower."

I'm currently on one of the six Spheres, which resides Santo Academy—and the Tower of Babel itself. The first and oldest of them all, the Sphere of Babel. It's the grandest city humanity has ever built.

Towering spires of polished brass and steel glinted in the sunlight, their intricate gears and mechanisms turning with rhythmic precision. The streets were alive with the murmur of voices, the clatter of tools, and the occasional burst of laughter from well-dressed merchants and scholars alike.

Steam-powered carriages zipped along cobblestone roads, weaving past bustling marketplaces. The smell of fresh parchment, oil, and faint ozone filled the air, mingling with the aroma of sweet pastries from nearby cafes.

Even the buildings seemed alive, adorned with intricate carvings and glowing with soft, magical lights.

Anger came to my heart seeing that vision, despite I'm not exactly Kaleb, I could still feel his hatred and disgust for the Spheres.

I looked around for a while, trying to enjoy a bit of the city that until now I have only seen on the screen. But quickly gave up, because the boiling anger inside Kaleb wouldn't let me enjoy that moment.

I sighed and walked purposefully toward one of the city's largest structures—a towering dome that dominated the skyline at its center. Unlike the surrounding buildings, it was crafted from a yellowish white material that seemed otherworldly, entirely out of place in this setting. Its surface was adorned with intricate symbols and cryptic letters.

That's the Tower of Babel.

It doesn't look like a tower at all…

Without wasting time, I walked toward it.

The tower's entrance was being guarded and monitored by many people, and the enormous gates itself was closed, with two monitors standing before it, making sure that no one entered without permission.

I approached the gates slowly, my steps deliberate. As I neared, one of the guards stepped forward to block my path. He was clad in a suit similar to mine, though entirely black, with a flowing blue robe and a stark white mask concealing his face. His voice cut through the air as he stopped me and asked:

"Identification,"

"Challenger Kaleb, Santo's Student" I said.

The man glanced me up and down before making a gesture of pulling something out of the air, and then from a puff of smoke that came out of nowhere, appeared a device.

He went through the device, which I knew was a very important list of all the challengers allowed to enter the tower. The list is so very protected that only a few people can summon it.

After a few seconds, the man said, "Very well, Challenger Kaleb. Be welcomed, this is Babel"

As he spoke, the gates behind him began to open, their massive form moving with a deliberate slowness that sent a faint tremor through the ground. The vibrations subsided as the gates fully parted, revealing a deep, impenetrable darkness within. The only visible feature was a thick, eerie fog that clung to the air, swirling ominously as if it were alive.

And, without any fear, I stepped inside.

As soon as I did, the world around me vanished as I was consumed by the darkness inside. It was when, from the void, a whisper came.

[Welcome to Babel, Challenger Kaleb]
