Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Fusion...

By applying his insights and intellect, Hikaru forcefully refined the Light Power he'd acquired, successfully resolving the conflict between magic and holy energy—preventing any backlash that might have caused him to lose control and literally explode.

His use of immortal qi contributed significantly to this, because in the grand scheme of "all things in nature having qi," it acted as a life-source buffer, soothing these two inherently opposing energies.

Now Hikaru was able to gather magic in his left hand and holy power in his right.

A "Holy-Demonic Fusion?"

He suddenly recalled how, in the original story, Yuuto Kiba—being a devil—initially only wielded demonic sword powers as his Sacred Gear, but later, through deeper understanding, was able to wield both holy and demonic swords simultaneously. It took him years of accumulation and a sudden breakthrough to achieve it.

Hikaru attempted to fuse these two otherwise conflicting energies within himself. Regardless of the universe's rules, fusion typically yields far greater power. Think of Yu-Gi-Oh! where two mundane normal monsters can fuse into a powerful "Red-Eyes." Or how, in Dragon Ball, Goku and Vegeta—no matter which fusion method they use—turn into the immensely strong Gogeta or Vegito.

He drew out his demonic energy, which, in the Underworld, differs by family lineage in both color and ability. For instance, the Gremory family's specialty is destructive power, generally represented by a deep crimson hue. Most devil magic takes on a dark or vividly striking color. Meanwhile, holy power is essentially "light," or "the light of God," and thus glows with pure gold.

So in Hikaru's hands, faint red magic swirled like threads on one side, while on the other, a golden cluster of light sparkled like tiny fireflies. As he slowly brought them together—

Boom!

They exploded, predictably.

Although these two energies could coexist in his body, once removed from it, they reacted the same way as ever. Hikaru wasn't surprised. If combining them had been that simple, someone else would have done it long ago.

He wasn't in a hurry. Even with a cheat-like ability, training takes time. Even a disciple of the "Wind-Spirit Moon-Shadow Sect" has to say "ding!" first.

Noticing it was late, Hikaru took a bath and went to bed.

The next day.

Another typical morning at school—nobody in class was talking about the incident from last night. Even though this world's setting is bizarre, various mythical factions still keep a firm hold behind the scenes. In this reality, the CCG "Doves" that everyone in the Tokyo Ghoul setting knows about is just another top-secret government unit here, similar to the "National Security" organizations often found in old novels.

If anything truly uncontainable occurred, they'd chalk it up to a "gas pipeline explosion," or cast large-scale memory alteration spells to resolve it.

Hikaru cast a glance at Touka Kirishima's seat. As someone "special," she achieved good grades in school and wore glasses, sitting in the front row, very much the picture of an attentive, diligent student. Indeed, she worked hard—outside of school, she mostly just talked with friends, and she had no trouble consuming cafeteria food. Unlike in the original setting, she didn't vomit whenever she ate human food.

Honestly, Hikaru found the Tokyo Ghoul explanation tough to reconcile. Sure, it's said that ghouls must eat people because humans have unique RC cells, but normal foods come in all kinds of flavors and nutritional content—why would they cause such a strong rejection?

Meanwhile, Touka, chatting and laughing with classmates, noticed Hikaru enter and instantly recalled last night's events. Her face went pale, and she instinctively closed her mouth.

"Huh? Touka, what's wrong? You just stopped talking—are you not feeling well?"

"N-no, I'm fine..."

Feeling Hikaru's gaze, Touka became visibly uneasy. But he soon looked away, giving her a chance to breathe again. Although he had spared them the night before, the psychological damage remained.

"Touka... you keep glancing over at Hikaru. Don't tell me you... have a crush on him?"

A classmate asked in surprise.

"W-what?! No way!"

Touka nearly choked at the idea. She could barely manage seeing him without panic, and the thought that he was seated right behind her made her feel on edge, squirming in her chair.

"No need to explain. Actually, it's perfectly normal to have a crush on him—I do, too. Which means we're rivals in love now!"

"???"
