Chapter 22: CHAPTER 22
Chapter 22 – Shattered Silence
The room felt too quiet.
It was the kind of silence that screamed louder than any words could, a suffocating stillness that wrapped itself around Serena like a heavy blanket. Every beat of her heart felt amplified in her chest, every breath she took too shallow, too fast.
Elias stood just a few feet away, his back to her as he stared out of the window. The city sprawled beneath them—alive, moving, but it felt so far away, as if it were an entirely different world. A world where she didn't feel so torn, so unsure.
She had kissed him. She had kissed him like she had never kissed anyone before—fierce, passionate, hungry for more. And yet, here they were, standing in the silence that followed, each of them lost in thoughts they couldn't voice.
It wasn't supposed to be like this.
They weren't supposed to be this tangled in each other.
She had told herself time and time again that she would walk away before it got too messy. Before they got too deep. But now… now she couldn't.
He was everything she had tried to stay away from—too dangerous, too complicated. But his presence was like a magnet, pulling her closer against her will, against all reason.
She could still feel the heat of his lips on hers, the taste of him lingering like an intoxicating reminder of how easy it was to lose herself in him.
And yet—
"Serena?"
Her breath caught at the sound of his voice, raw and quiet, as though he were trying to reach her through the silence.
Slowly, she lifted her gaze to meet his. His face was unreadable, but his eyes… His eyes were filled with something she couldn't quite place.
Something… tender.
"Why are you still here?" His words were soft, almost hesitant, as if he was asking a question he already knew the answer to.
"I'm not sure."
Her response was honest, a simple admission that held more weight than anything else she could have said.
Elias stepped closer, his presence filling the space between them. He reached out, his fingers grazing her arm, sending a spark of warmth through her skin.
"I don't want you to leave," he said quietly, his voice low, almost a whisper.
The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning.
Serena's heart raced, but she didn't step away. She didn't move.
"I don't want to leave either," she murmured, her voice barely audible.
His gaze locked onto hers, and for a moment, everything else faded away. The world outside, the weight of their past, even the doubts that had been swirling in her mind—they all melted in the intensity of the connection they shared.
"I'm scared," she admitted, her voice trembling as she spoke the truth she had been hiding even from herself.
"Of what?" His fingers moved to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, his touch gentle, reassuring.
"Of what this could be. Of how much it matters. Of how much I…"
She swallowed hard, unable to finish the sentence.
Elias took a step closer, his body now inches from hers, his breath warm against her skin. "Tell me, Serena," he said, his voice a low rasp. "Tell me what you're afraid of."
"I'm afraid of how easily I fall for you."
The words slipped out before she could stop them, a confession that left her feeling exposed, vulnerable.
Elias's expression softened, a rare tenderness in his eyes that sent a shiver down her spine. "Serena…"
His hand cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing gently over her skin as though he were memorizing the feel of her.
"I'm not going anywhere," he whispered, his lips brushing against her forehead. "I'm here, and I'll stay here, as long as you'll let me."
Her pulse quickened, and she found herself drawn to him, her body leaning toward his instinctively.
"I'm afraid of losing myself in you," she confessed, the words slipping from her lips like a secret she had never dared to say aloud.
"Then don't." His hand slid down to rest at her waist, pulling her closer, their bodies pressing together. "Don't lose yourself in me. Just… find yourself with me."
Serena closed her eyes, her heart racing in her chest. His words were everything she needed to hear, yet they terrified her more than anything else.
She had never been one to lose herself in anyone. She had always been the strong, independent woman who relied on no one but herself. But with Elias… everything was different.
Everything felt like a delicate balance—one that could tip either way.
She could keep her walls up, protect herself, keep running. Or she could take a chance.
And as she felt Elias's heartbeat against her own, her decision became clear.
She didn't want to run anymore.
Not from him. Not from this.
With a shaky breath, she pulled back slightly, enough to look up into his eyes.
"I want to stay," she whispered, her voice raw, vulnerable. "I want to be here with you."
Elias's eyes darkened, and he leaned down, his lips brushing against hers in a kiss that was soft at first, tentative, as if he were asking for permission.
Serena responded, her hands sliding up to rest against his chest as she kissed him back, her fingers curling into his shirt.
This time, there were no walls between them. No hesitation.
It was just them—two people, finding their way in the quiet, fragile space they had created between each other.
The kiss deepened, and for the first time in what felt like forever, Serena allowed herself to get lost in him.
In the way his hands tangled in her hair.
In the way his lips moved against hers, slow and steady, as if savoring every second.
In the way his touch made her feel like she was home.
She didn't know what the future held for them.
But in that moment, she didn't care.
She wasn't afraid anymore.
Because, for once, she knew that love wasn't something to be afraid of. It was something to embrace.
And maybe, just maybe, they were both finally ready to embrace it together.
To be continued.....
