Chapter 1: Shinigami Academy
A/N: Before getting started here's a disclaimer. There will be discrepancies with the canon so if you're okay with it you may proceed. Enjoy~
Alex was currently attending a lecture in a hall where an instructor was addressing him and the rest of the students about how they would be able to enhance their spiritual power. The topic of discussion was quite exciting and thanks to the excellent articulation skills of the instructor, all the students were listening to his words with great attentiveness. Some were taking notes of things they found interesting while most were so engrossed in listening to the instructor that they had not even touched their pen.
However, among all the students there was an oddity, it was Alex. The only thought going on in his mind currently was related to the circumstances he had been put through. Not only had he reincarnated once but twice! It was needless to say that he was frustrated. It wasn't his fault that he was transmigrated into Ichigo's body! He didn't ask to be transmigrated in his body in the first place.
If you're helping someone get transmigrated into an anime world then isn't it basic etiquette to make sure they don't have it rough for themselves? Alex just wanted to activate Ichigo's innate soul-reaper powers so that he could protect himself in the protagonist's body, the inviter of all troubles, but much to his dismay! His own power, Zangetsu, became the reason for his demise!
Alex could only sigh at these twists of fate as he started once again going through the memories that he had just received this morning. He still remembers the warning that Ryuk, his roommate, gave him before he left his room. Thanks to his warning the moment Alex's memories had completely integrated with the former owner's memories the consequences of not attending the class soon appeared in his mind.
He hurriedly stood up and ran towards his wardrobe and put on his white academy robe which had red embroidery on its sleeves. The embroidery looked just like a red line around the sleeves of the robes but upon closer inspection, one would realize that they were done quite intricately. A series of small swords were placed one after another and they completed a round around the sleeve. Unfortunately, Alex had no time to admire this artistry as he hurriedly tightened his robes and ran towards the academy building after adjusting his hair in the mirror.
While on his way he tried to feel his breath as a reflex and couldn't help but make a disgusted face when the odour entered his nose. 'Souls also suffer from bad breath!' the thought entered his mind as he ran according to the route his memory was telling him to take. His memory was becoming clearer and clearer as he entered the premises of the academy.
Due to all these reasons, he was currently attending this lecture that was being done by a good-natured instructor. The man was definitely an expert in his field and doing a great job of imbuing knowledge into all the student's minds but unfortunately, Alex was too preoccupied with cursing the happenings of his life that he was missing out on his opportunity to acquire knowledge.
Needless to say, as an experienced faculty the instructor was able to quickly figure out the only student who was not paying attention in his class. He steered the topic which was being discussed towards a yes or no answer and then gave a slight pause to wait for the response from the crowd of students as he looked towards the direction where Alex was sitting.
All the students who were sitting in that particular direction especially responded with a direct yes except for one who seemed to be just been broken out from a dazed state.
"You, Stand up," The instructor met Aizen's eyes and said.
Alex seemed to have realised that he had been caught and couldn't help but feel a bit nervous as all the eyes in the hall were now directed towards him. He involuntarily gulped in his saliva as his brain rushed to think of a sound excuse that he could give to the instructor.
"Yes, I'm talking to you young man, Stand up!" The instructor mistook Alex's silence for confusion as he once again repeated himself.
Hearing this Alex no longer delayed things as he immediately stood up from his seat. With the only one apart from the instructor standing in the hall Alex was now clearly able to see all the eyes that were directed towards him. Faces containing mockery, annoyance, and amusement were getting registered by Alex's eyes increasing his embarrassment by a level.
"What's your name?" The instructor asked.
"Alex," He replied in a meek manner in order to not provoke the instructor.
"Alex tell me, what were we discussing just now?" The instructor questioned.
Needless to say, Alex had no idea about what was being taught in the class so he kept mum praying for things to come to an end as soon as possible.
Seeing that Alex chose the option of keeping quiet the instructor said, "I asked you something young man, and when I ask something from you, I expect a reply. Do you understand Alex?!"
"Yes sir!" Alex replied.
"I don't want your 'yes sir', I want an answer! Do you know it or not?" The instructor continued. Giving Alex an option to escape from his plight.
"I don't sir," Alex replied while not daring to meet his eyes with the instructor.
"The person next to Alex, Stand up!" The instructor said while looking at the person.
"Yes sir," A feminine voice that had a trace of self-confidence audible in it replied.
"Tell me what we were discussing earlier," The instructor said.
"We were discussing the various methods following which one can raise their spiritual power..." A perfect answer escaped the woman's mouth and by the end of it, she adjusted her loosened spectacles with her flawless white hands.
"Very well said, what's your name, young lady?" The instructor asked curiously.
"It's Nanao Ise," She replied.
"Your command over your language is impressive Nanao. I'm impressed by the way you answered and this tells me that you're very thorough with what was being taught in the class..." The instructor's praise brought a slight smile to Nanao's face as she felt all the hard work she did the night before in going through today's lesson paid off.
"...and that is why I give you the task of looking after Alex for this whole week. By the end of the week, I want him to present a 5-page report on each topic that we had and will discuss during this whole week and I want you to make sure that he does the job correctly. Can I trust you with this task Nanao?" The instructor asked.
Hearing the instructor's words Nanao's smile slowly disappeared as a feeling of annoyance towards Alex started developing in her heart but she still said respectfully replied to the instructor, "Yes sir, I'll make sure he finishes the task,"
The instructor nodded upon hearing that and continued, "Don't worry, I'll give you ten points extra in the final evaluation for this task."
Hearing this Nanao's face that had dulled down a bit and once again brightened inviting a soft chuckle from the instructor which made a tinge of red appear on Nanao's face due to her embarrassment.
The instructor then looked towards him Alex and said, "Take this report as a way of apologising for being distracted in the class. I don't believe in verbal apologies. If you're sorry for something show that sincerity in your work you understand?"
"Yes sir," Alex replied as he swept his gaze over Nanao's face. He had earlier found the face of the woman sitting next to him a bit familiar but it was only now that it struck him that she was the co-lieutenant of the 1st division in the anime.
The age of the students in the class was between eighteen to twenty years. which meant that Nanao should also be a young adult just like him. This was a crucial piece of information for Alex as this told him that he was most likely more than a hundred years before the cannon took place. Which made him take a sigh of relief as he had some time before things started going out of hand.
The class soon resumed as everyone's attention went back towards the instructor. This time Alex didn't dare to be distracted as he too immersed himself in listening to each and every word of the instructor. Needless to say, the instructor was pleased with Alex's attitude this time.
Another half an hour passed and the period was finally over. Seeing the instructor leaving the class Alex's upper body sprawled on his desk as he closed his eyes to rest them for a while.
Nanao who was slowly packing her textbooks looked at this crude behaviour of Alex with a hint of disgust. It was completely opposite to the maiden-like behaviour she had been taught to follow from her childhood. She soon calmed herself down as she thought of the instructor's trust in her abilities to guide this man who seemed to be a lost cause.
"Cough Cough," Nanao coughed to attract Alex's attention as she weird to call him by his name when they didn't even know each other but to her great disappointment Alex didn't even flinch. 'Was my cough too low?' Nanao thought to herself as she gave it another attempt.
"Cough Cough," which was also met with no response from Alex who had his head turned towards the other side. This irked Nanao a bit but she decided to give her all in her next attempt.
"Cough! Cough! Cough! Cough!" Nanao continued to cough one after another in order to attract his attention and finally attempted on the fourth try.
"Hmm is there a matter?" Alex who had been going through his memories now that he was free asked in a bit of annoyance after being disturbed by a series of coughs from Nanao.
Sensing the annoyance in Alex's voice Nanao felt like slapping her book on his head, 'Here she was wasting her valuable time trying to help him get started with his report and he was showing her this nasty attitude but she quickly calmed herself down as those ten points were at stake and she had no intention of losing them,'
"Regarding the task that the instructor gave me..." Nanao tried to complete her sentence but was interrupted midway by Alex.
"Oh that, you don't need to worry about it. I'll do it myself," Alex said. Initially, he thought that he would be needing her help in finishing this task aswell but as he began to listen to the instructor's words carefully he realized he was easily able to grasp what he was talking about. A certain memory flashed in his mind as an image of himself reading a large number of books under the flame of a candle appeared in his mind.
The previous owner of this body seemed to be very studious and had read quite a number of books. This made things easier for Alex as he now had enough confidence to write the reports by himself.
Since he was able to complete the task by himself he felt no need to rely on Nanao and thereby feel indebted to her. Therefore he politely told her to go away.
"I can't do that!" but much to his surprise he was met with a refusal.
