Chapter 22: [22] King Arthur and Mordred After Watching the Video
We're doomed!
Britain is surely headed for destruction this time!
As Gawain looked upon his king, the final scenes from the video flashed through his mind.
Snowflakes drifted, the north wind howled, and the world lay desolate.
The king sat alone upon a hill.
Beneath her feet stretched endless corpses, staining the earth crimson.
The falling snow buried all of Britain's future...
No!
A future without a future is not the future I desire!
Gawain took a deep breath.
As the Knight of the Sun, wielder of the sister sword to Excalibur—[Excalibur Galatine]—
He must stand up in this moment of life and death for Britain and save this nation!
Now, the video The Perfect King had finished playing.
Countless people around the world were waiting to see Britain's reaction.
To be precise, the reactions of the two central figures in the video—
King Arthur and Mordred.
According to the video, these two had fought each other with everything they had.
The nameless heroic spirit who tried to mediate paid with his life—a tragedy of the utmost severity.
After Nameless's death, one wielded the father-slaying sword, the other the child-piercing spear, and they perished together.
Destroying Britain, killing Nameless... these were blood feuds of life and death.
Now that the mysterious [Alaya] had exposed everything, no one knew how the two heroic spirits would react.
But Gawain had to admit—Mordred was indeed a little pitiful.
Raised by Morgan as a tool from childhood, meant to kill her father.
Then she met Nameless, mistaking his meticulous familial care for romantic love.
She worshipped King Arthur madly, only to be outright rejected—her father didn't consider her worthy of the throne at all.
At the Battle of Camlann, she and King Arthur joined forces to kill Nameless, only to be stabbed to death by her father in the end.
How tragic!
So Gawain unhesitatingly stepped between them: "Mordred, you promised that if Nameless in the video was real, you'd eat my mashed potatoes for a whole year. Time to pay up!"
???
Mordred's tangled emotions froze instantly as she stared up at the Sun Knight.
When I type a question mark, it's not because I have a problem—it's because you do!
Given the situation, shouldn't you be trying to stop father and child from killing each other?
Why bring up something so trivial?
"Don't worry, I'll make all kinds of potato dishes for you—sweet, spicy, you name it! After all, I'm not some kind of demon~"
Gawain's smile was as radiant as the sunlight outside.
The noble, dignified demeanor of a proper British gentleman was on full display.
...You destroyed my Britain, dragged my king to mutual destruction, and now expect me to help you?
...If not for the stability of Britain now, even if you were my sister from another mother, I'd have to uphold justice and cut ties!
"You potato fiend!"
Mordred blinked, then blurted out the nickname Nameless had given him.
This guy loved making all sorts of dishes out of potatoes.
Every time, he'd rave about how great potatoes were and force the entire Round Table to eat them.
Everyone suspected he'd been a potato in a past life—why else would he be so obsessed?
"Humility, honor, sacrifice, valor, compassion, spirit, honesty, justice—these are the eight virtues of knighthood."
King Arthur spoke calmly beside them, her saintly blue eyes fixed on Mordred. "Mordred, you continue to disappoint me."
"You were never fit to be king—just a sacrificial offering lost in lofty ideals, maintaining your self-righteous devotion alone, caring for no one!"
Mordred shot to her feet, glaring up at her father, who now stood taller than she remembered.
After watching the video, countless forgotten memories flooded back, reigniting the rebellious knight's spirit from those days.
"That's exactly why they believed you couldn't possibly be human—you never understood people's hearts! That's why they followed me in rebellion!"
She clenched her teeth tightly, her voice filled with fury as she shouted, "I destroyed the Britain you cared about most with my own hands—just to make you regret it, to force you to open your eyes and look around, to see me!"
An overwhelming tide of emotion poured out unchecked.
Even if she were to be run through by the other's spear, it wouldn't mask this boundless hatred.
"Mo..."
Gawain stood to the side, watching with a complicated expression.
Back then, Lancelot had slain his most beloved sister, Gareth, sparking a fierce battle between them that left both grievously wounded.
In the Battle of Camlann that followed, he had refused Lancelot's aid to the King.
As a result, his old wounds were struck, leading to his death.
His personal grudge had led to the King's demise, becoming the greatest regret of his life.
Now, seeing Mordred descend upon the 21st century in the form of a heroic spirit, still utterly unrepentant, all he wanted was to teach her a harsh lesson.
It was normal for children to be mischievous and disobedient.
She could just be more careful in her next life!
Facing Mordred's accusations, King Arthur replied calmly, "I have never denied you, nor have I ever regretted anything."
"You still don't regret anything, even now?"
Mordred's finger trembled slightly as she pointed at her.
"Before I pulled the sword from the stone, Nameless had already told me everything. I knew full well that Britain was doomed to fall, yet I drew the sword without hesitation!"
Artoria turned her head to gaze out the window, at the dazzling metropolis beyond.
Before drawing the sword, Nameless had revealed it all.
Hatred, betrayal, destruction... She had known all of it.
Precisely because she knew, she had pulled the sword from the stone, determined to do everything in her power to prolong Britain's future.
A faint sorrow flickered across her usually serene face. "The only thing I regret is failing to repay Nameless for his help."
That man had silently supported her from the very beginning.
When she drew the sword from the stone, he had stepped forward, suppressing all opposition and helping her ascend to the throne.
Against the Vile King Vortigern, he had shielded her, joining forces to slay the invincible white dragon.
Amid countless undercurrents of rebellion, he willingly became an assassin in the shadows, quelling every uprising.
And in the final Battle of Camlann, he had placed himself between her and Mordred.
All so she wouldn't have to bear the sin of spilling her own blood, even if it meant sacrificing himself.
Artoria even had an inkling that some terrible calamity had occurred after her death.
Once again, it was he who had stepped in to resolve it all!
For all of this, she owed him far too much.
Far more than she could ever repay.
Artoria looked at the girl before her with calm resolve. "So, if you dare lay a hand on him, I won't hold back!"
Had she not already slain Mordred once, she would have already drawn her holy spear.
"I—I refuse to accept this!"
Tears welled in Mordred's eyes as she glared at her. "You two are just toying with me, treating me like a puppet to manipulate as you please!"
"Nameless once told Merlin about two kinds of birds—one that flies through its own efforts, and another that lays eggs and pushes its children to fly desperately. We chose the former."
Artoria met her gaze with unwavering seriousness.
They had given her the greatest freedom, unwilling to let her walk the same doomed path.
She sighed softly. "Perhaps I gave you too much freedom, leaving you lonely, and that's what led you to betrayal."
"Nameless is truly remarkable, so I can't possibly yield him to you!"
Mordred stared coldly at her. "You want to repay him, but can you even find him?"
That person upheld justice and was content to remain nameless.
If not for the mysterious [Alaya] exposing them, the entire world would never have known how much they had done.
A nameless heroic spirit of unparalleled mystery!
Under questioning.
Artoria's gaze pierced through the massive heart before her, looking down at Mordred: "It's normal that you can't find him, but I can!"
