Chapter 6: The Adventurer’s Path
The capital of Ignis was a bustling hub of activity, its streets filled with merchants, adventurers, and nobles. Kael walked through the crowded marketplace, his eyes scanning the various stalls and shops. He had been in the city for a week now, and though he was still adjusting to the noise and chaos, he was beginning to find his footing.
Lord Alaric had been true to his word, taking Kael under his wing and training him in the ways of combat and strategy. But the nobleman had also insisted that Kael gain real-world experience by joining the Adventurers Guild and taking on quests.
"You can't learn everything in a training hall," Lord Alaric had said. "The world is your best teacher."
Kael had reluctantly agreed, and now he found himself standing outside the guild hall, a massive building adorned with banners and symbols representing the various ranks of adventurers. He took a deep breath and pushed open the doors, stepping into the lively interior.
The guild hall was a chaotic yet organized space, filled with adventurers of all ranks. Some were gathered around tables, discussing their latest quests, while others stood at the counter, handing in completed assignments. Kael approached the reception desk, where a cheerful woman with short brown hair greeted him.
"Welcome to the Adventurers Guild! How can I help you?" she asked, her tone friendly.
"I'm here to register as an adventurer," Kael said, his voice steady despite his nerves.
The woman nodded, pulling out a form and handing it to him. "Fill this out, and we'll get you started. Do you have any prior experience?"
Kael hesitated. "I've fought monsters before, but I've never officially been an adventurer."
The woman smiled. "That's alright. We'll start you off with some beginner quests to get you acquainted with the system."
As Kael filled out the form, he couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. This was his chance to prove himself, to grow stronger and learn more about the world.
After registering, Kael was introduced to the guild's ranking system. Adventurers and monsters were ranked from E to S, with E being the lowest and S being the highest.
"E-rank adventurers handle minor tasks like gathering herbs or clearing out small pests," the receptionist explained. "As you complete quests and gain experience, you'll move up the ranks. Lira's party, for example, is A-rank, just one step below S-rank."
Kael's eyes widened. He had known Lira was strong, but he hadn't realized just how highly ranked she was.
"What about the heroes?" Kael asked. "Where do they fit in?"
The receptionist's expression grew serious. "The heroes are in a league of their own. They're chosen by the gods and possess powers far beyond what any adventurer can achieve. Darius the Devourer, for instance, is said to be strong enough to destroy an entire country single-handedly."
Kael nodded, his mind racing. He had a long way to go if he wanted to reach that level.
Kael's first quests were simple: gather herbs from the nearby forest, clear out a nest of E-rank monsters called **Rock Sprites**, and deliver a package to a nearby village. He completed them with ease, his time manipulation allowing him to move quickly and efficiently.
But as he progressed, the quests became more challenging. He was introduced to a variety of monsters, each with its own unique abilities and weaknesses.
1. Rock Sprites (E-rank):
- Small, stone-like creatures that inhabit caves and rocky areas.
- Weakness: Vulnerable to blunt force and water-based attacks.
- Kael learned to mimic their durability by slowing time around his body, making his skin as hard as stone.
2. Flame Hounds (D-rank):
- Dog-like monsters with fiery fur and the ability to breathe fire.
- Weakness: Susceptible to water and ice-based attacks.
- Kael used his time manipulation to slow their movements, making them easier to dodge and counter.
3. Vine Crawlers (C-rank):
- Plant-based monsters that use vines to ensnare their prey.
- Weakness: Weak to fire and cutting attacks.
- Kael mimicked their vine-like movements by accelerating his own attacks, making them faster and more precise.
4. Thunderbirds (B-rank):
- Avian monsters that can summon lightning strikes.
- Weakness: Vulnerable to earth-based attacks and physical projectiles.
- Kael used his time manipulation to dodge their lightning strikes and mimic their speed, allowing him to keep up with their movements.
5. Frost Wyrms (A-rank):
- Dragon-like creatures that breathe freezing mist and have scales as hard as steel.
- Weakness: Weak to fire and heat-based attacks.
- Kael learned to mimic their freezing breath by slowing time around his own breath, creating a localized cold effect.
6. Shadow Stalkers (S-rank):
- Elusive, shadowy creatures that can phase through walls and attack from the darkness.
- Weakness: Vulnerable to light-based attacks and holy magic.
- Kael used his time manipulation to predict their movements, allowing him to strike before they could phase away.
As Kael completed more quests, he began to understand just how unusual the Black Wolves he had faced were. Normally, Black Wolves were C-rank monsters, but the ones he had encountered were far stronger, with some even reaching B-rank and the pack leader being slightly stronger than an A-rank monster.
"It's not natural," Lira said one evening as they sat in the guild hall. "Monsters don't just become stronger overnight. Something—or someone—is causing this."
Kael nodded, his mind racing. He had heard rumors of a cult manipulating monsters, but he hadn't given it much thought until now.
Kael's time manipulation allowed him to mimic some of the monsters' abilities, giving him an edge in combat. By slowing time around his body, he could mimic the durability of Rock Sprites. By accelerating his movements, he could mimic the speed of Thunderbirds. And by manipulating the air around him, he could mimic the freezing breath of Frost Wyrms.
But these abilities came at a cost. Each use of his powers drained him, leaving him exhausted and vulnerable. He knew he needed to train harder, to push his limits if he wanted to survive in this dangerous world.
As Kael completed his latest quest—a B-rank mission to clear out a nest of Thunderbirds—he felt a sense of accomplishment. He was growing stronger, more confident in his abilities.
But he also knew that this was just the beginning. The world was vast and filled with dangers far beyond what he had faced so far. And somewhere out there, the cult that was manipulating monsters was growing stronger.
Kael clenched his fists, his resolve hardening. He would become stronger. He would uncover the truth. And he would protect the people he cared about.
No matter what it took.
