Embrace of the void

Chapter 28: The Spider's Lair

In one of the E-rank dungeons, a party of seven adventurers prepared to confront the challenges ahead. The team consisted of Lily, John, Sarah, Alexa, her brother Alex, Sean, and their leader, James—known by his nickname, Scar—a man Michael had encountered in his previous life.

Scar was clad in leather armor, wielding two short swords, and draped in a short black cloak that covered half of his body. Lily and Sean donned Magicians' attire, each carrying a magic wand that flickered with latent energy.

Alexa, dressed as a healer, held a wand designed to enhance her spells, ready to support her teammates. Sarah brandished a slender sword, crafted for both cutting and piercing, complemented by a light shield for defense.

John, the team's steadfast defender, wore robust armor and carried a giant shield in one hand, prepared to absorb any incoming attacks. Alex, with a bow slung over his shoulder and a quiver of arrows at his side, also kept a dagger at his hip for close encounters.

"Listen up, everyone! Things have gone smoothly thus far, but we're about to enter the boss room," Scar warned, his voice edged with authority. "Do not let your guard down. I don't care if any of you die, but I absolutely do not want the boss to scold me. This is the last dungeon I'm helping you conquer; next time, you'll have to find someone else or go in alone. Understood?"

A tense silence fell over the group; no one dared to challenge Scar's mood, knowing well his reputation as a B-rank adventurer. They quickly checked their equipment, ensuring everything was in place before stepping into the ominous boss room.

The chamber was expansive, shrouded in darkness and a chilling cold. Dimly glowing crystals punctuated the cave, casting an eerie light that barely illuminated the surroundings. As the team ventured deeper, the atmosphere thickened with tension.

Suddenly, the silhouette of the boss emerged from the shadows—a colossal spider, its many legs poised for attack. The moment the team crossed the threshold, the battle commenced.

As the giant spider loomed in the dimly lit cavern, its multitude of eyes glinted with malice, casting an ominous glow upon the team. The air crackled with tension as they gripped their weapons, readying themselves for the impending clash. Scar, the imposing leader, stood at the center, his expression a blend of annoyance and concentration, scrutinizing the creature.

Suddenly, the spider unleashed a deafening screech, and a torrent of green acid erupted from its maw. In a swift reaction, Lily conjured a wall of earth to shield her comrades, but the acidic spray corroded it within seconds, leaving nothing but a melting heap of stone.

"Flaming Spears!" shouted Shaun, as he conjured several blazing metal projectiles, launching them toward the beast. The spider shrieked in agony, the flames searing its flesh, yet its hardened shell absorbed most of the damage.

Seizing the moment, John charged forward, drawing the spider's attention. He slammed his shield into the ground, unleashing a shockwave that rippled through the cavern. The creature staggered, its focus shifting to the defender.

Meanwhile, Alex nocked an arrow, his aim true. With a whisper, he released his Poison Arrow, the projectile slicing through the air and embedding itself in one of the spider's eyes. The creature recoiled, screeching in fury.

Sarah, wielding her sword, unleashed a Frost Slash, the icy blade severing several of the spider's legs. The monster howled, enraged, and retaliated by shooting sticky webs that ensnared Sarah. "I need help! I can't break free!" she cried, panic creeping into her voice.

With a roar, the spider slammed its razor-sharp legs into John's shield, sending him crashing against the cave wall. Blood spattered from his mouth, painting the ground crimson.

"Healing Light!" Alexa shouted, directing a beam from her wand to mend John's wounds, the light enveloping him in a warm glow.

Amidst the chaos, Shaun ignited the webs trapping Sarah, flames licking at the sticky strands, freeing her from their grasp. Lily and Alex continued to barrage the spider with arrows and spells, each impact resonating with fury.

Scar remained a silent observer, his indifference palpable.

Once free, Sarah took a deep breath and launched her counterattack. "Frost Tornado!" she declared, summoning a swirling vortex of ice that engulfed the spider's legs, freezing them in place.

The spider thrashed violently, attempting to break free, its desperation evident as it fired a series of acid shots. Alex was relentless, striking the remaining eyes with precision, blinding the beast in a flurry of arrows.

John braced himself, blocking the spider's frenzied assaults, but the strain was evident. Just as he thought they might gain the upper hand, Shaun focused his energy, conjuring a massive sphere of flames. With a fierce shout, he hurled it at the spider, the explosion sending shards of its exoskeleton flying, splattering blood across the walls.

"Is it over? I'm running low on mana; I can't hold on much longer," Shaun gasped, fatigue creeping into his voice.

"Don't lower your guard! We don't know if this bastard is dead yet," John cautioned, his eyes narrowing.

Alexa, rallying her strength, silently healed the group, their wounds mending but the exhaustion weighing heavily upon them.

As the smoke began to clear, the spider, in a final act of defiance, attempted one last desperate attack. But Sarah was quicker. Channeling her energy, she moved with the speed of her Frost Slash, delivering a decisive strike. The ice sliced clean through the creature's neck, severing its head and freezing the gushing blood in an instant.

The cavern fell silent. The team, breathing heavily, relaxed their postures, the reality of their victory settling in. They were battered and bloodied, yet alive—together they had triumphed over the monstrous threat.

"Good job, but you need to focus on your teamwork and diversify your attacks. Training to master your techniques is crucial," Scar said, his voice steady yet commanding. "You shouldn't have given the spider a chance to strike. Now, take a moment to rest before you collect its body. I'll leave now."

The group exhaled in relief, fatigue settling in as they took a brief respite. As they gathered the remnants of the spider, an overwhelming stench filled the air.

"Damn, it smells terrible," John grimaced.

"You'll have to get used to it if you want to keep doing this," Shaun replied, shrugging off the odor.

"By the way, have you decided which academy you'll join?" Alexa inquired, shifting the conversation.

"I haven't made up my mind yet. I plan to travel after the exams," Lily responded, her gaze distant.

"Damn, I haven't studied at all!" Alex cursed, running a hand through his hair.

Alexa shot him a disapproving look. "I told you to study with me, but you refused. If you had, you'd be done by now."

"Speaking of which, Lily, did you deliver the professor's letter to Michael?" John asked, curiosity piqued.

"What letter?" Alex interjected, annoyance creeping into his voice at the mention of Michael.

Lily recalled the professor's request for her to deliver a message. "I did. It was part of my assignment."

"Why would you do that? That idiot can go to hell," Alex scoffed.

"That's what I thought, too," John agreed, nodding.

"You don't need to worry about my decisions, you know," Lily said, irritation evident in her tone.

"Is he still training?" Sarah asked, her curiosity evident.

Lily considered this. "Yes, and I have a feeling he's stronger than us."

"How can he be stronger when we've been awake longer?" Alexa questioned, skepticism lacing her words.

"It's just a feeling. Let's head back now; he's supposed to return today, and I want to see him," Lily insisted.

As they continued to collect the spider's remains, a sense of camaraderie began to take root among them. Finally, they left the cell, ready to face whatever lay ahead.
