Chapter 19: Chapter 20: A Conspiracy Emerges
Li Ge heard the not-so-light sound and her heart trembled. She tried to maintain the gentle smile on her face and explained, "Master Witch, don't worry. It won't bite anyone again. We'll try to stay in the house and not come out for the next month. You can rest assured. And, to that elder, I'm very sorry."
Before the words were finished, Li Ge gave Wulun a deep bow, startling him. He quickly helped her up, repeatedly saying, "Young lady, you shouldn't do that. Please get up."
Despite her heart still racing, Wulun braced himself and sent the man and beast to their temporary residence.
Because of Wulun's own eyes, the entire 'Dust' clan knew that their wolf king would no longer hurt people, so they all returned home, each returning to their interrupted dreams.
Back in the house, Li Ge brought some clean water and carefully washed the blood from the wolf's mouth. The blood-red eyes stared at Li Ge intently, as if scrutinizing this human. After a long time, it didn't figure out where that strange feeling came from, so it simply closed its eyes and stopped looking at the busy woman.
Because of the pain of the transformation, the wolf quickly fell asleep. Li Ge, as usual, took a thin blanket and lay on the wolf's soft belly.
As soon as she touched the wolf's body, she felt the spot stiffen. The blood-red eyes suddenly opened. When it saw the person in front of it, it slowly closed its eyes again.
Li Ge laughed. This was still Mo, with the same light sleep and the same lack of defense against her.
Smiling, she closed her eyes, and a warm breath flowed in the room.
Just as Li Ge was still dreaming, there was a hurried knock on the door. Li Ge blinked her eyes, her steps faltering. She rubbed her eyes and opened the latch.
"Young lady, didn't you say the wolf king wouldn't bite anyone anymore? Why was another person from our clan bitten to death before dawn?" Wulun's voice was calm, but the questioning in it was obvious.
Wulun's words made Li Ge's body stiffen, and her sleepiness disappeared instantly. She subconsciously looked back at the wolf standing not far away. With just one glance, Li Ge was sure it hadn't gone out last night.
"Master Witch, this wasn't Mo's doing." Li Ge said calmly.
"How could it not be? The wound is exactly the same as the one on Huai Wu when he was bitten. And we've always had people on guard. No other wolf could have gotten in." Wulun's already anxious heart became even more agitated when he heard Li Ge's words. He almost shouted.
He was the witch of this clan and was responsible for the safety of his people. Now, the lives of his people were in danger, and he knew the culprit was right in front of him, but he couldn't punish him as he usually would.
"Then please let me see the person." Li Ge asked.
Wulun nodded and turned to leave. Li Ge sighed. She had originally thought that Mo lifting the curse was too smooth. It turned out that the difficulties were waiting for them here.
As Li Ge stepped out of the door, the wolf had already stood beside her, its posture clearly meaning, "I am a suspect, so I have the right to be present."
Knowing Mo's personality, Li Ge patted the wolf's head and led it to follow Wulun.
The person who had been bitten to death lived in the wooden house closest to the outer edge of the second circle. When Li Ge arrived, the 'Dust' clan had already surrounded the house, and the sound of discussion filled her ears.
"Didn't the Master Witch say the wolf king wouldn't bite anyone anymore?"
"That's right. The wolf king is our guardian deity. Why would he take the lead in killing our clansmen?"
"Master Witch, please give us an explanation."
The people's righteous indignation was endless. Li Ge worriedly looked at the wolf and found that its expression hadn't changed at all. This reassured her. As expected, someone like Mo wouldn't let these people affect his judgment.
"Ahem, everyone, please be quiet." Wulun cleared his throat and opened his mouth. But when the people saw Li Ge and the wolf king, they had just been spitting with anger, they froze instantly. They fell silent and then gradually found excuses to leave.
It was laughable. If they let the wolf king remember them, the next person to have their throat bitten might be them.
After a moment, the courtyard was left with only two elders and the lifeless body of the person who had been bitten lying on a long wooden board in the courtyard. Another elder who had already lost his breath lay beside him.
Li Ge stepped forward and saw the gruesome wound on the man's throat, the skin and flesh turned outward. She could even see the severed blood vessels. The wound had stopped bleeding and turned purplish.
"Young lady, the wound where he was bitten is exactly the same as the one on Huai Wu." Huai Wu was the elder who had been bitten to death last night.
Scanning the horrifying wound, Li Ge couldn't see anything unusual. She asked the wolf, "Mo, what do you think?"
The wolf looked at Li Ge without expression and raised its head high, elegantly walking towards the door.
Li Ge paused and stared at the wolf king whose butt was facing her. She gave Wulun a forced smile. "That… Master Witch, Mo means this person wasn't him."
Li Ge braced herself, waiting for Wulun's next onslaught. But after a long time, she only heard him sigh and turn to leave.
That night, the moon was bright and the stars were sparse. The night was as clear as water, and a single lamp swayed left and right, casting the shadows of one man and one wolf on the wall.
"Mo, do you think someone will be killed again tonight?" Li Ge looked at the bright sky.
The wolf glanced at the nervous woman, its eyes flickered, but didn't make any other movements.
At this moment, Li Ge finally admitted that this was Mo, but also not him.
Suddenly, a faint crow cawing in the distance sounded particularly eerie in the not-so-quiet night. The wolf's blood-red eyes flashed with ferocity. It sprang up on all fours and flew out.
Hearing the sound, Li Ge quietly followed.
Awooo… Following the sound of the wolf's howl, Li Ge's heart clenched. When she arrived at the scene, she saw two pure white figures tearing at each other in the moonlight.
Li Ge had just stood firm when many hurried footsteps followed behind her. It seemed that everyone wanted to catch the culprit, so they were also waiting for this moment to arrive.
"Why are there two wolf kings?" Wulun asked Li Ge, who was stunned.
Li Ge shook her head and said without expression, "Mo is the real wolf king. The other one is fake, and the culprit."
Although it was far away and the two wolves had the same color fur in the dark night, Li Ge knew that the one taking the upper hand was Mo.
Mo was different. Although his appearance was the same, his aura was vastly different. Mo exuded a noble and calm aura, ferocious but not brutal. The other one was full of wildness, a pure beast.
