echos of the Grid

Chapter 16: Chapter 16: A Knight’s Betrayal

The safehouse street erupted into a maelstrom of green and shadow as the rift disgorged its corrupted knights—five towering figures in cracked, glowing armor, their longswords blazing with black-tainted Grid energy. Kai hit the ground hard, the morpher's splintered shard biting into his palm, blood dripping as its cracked crystal pulsed a frantic, dying rhythm. Pain seared his side, his stitches straining, but Kaelric's echo roared louder—Protect—and he staggered up, the Titans and Justice League fanning out around him in a desperate stand.

Eclipso loomed at the rift's edge, shard in hand, its black-green light warping the air like heat off a furnace. "Your Grid shatters, vessel," he taunted, voice a jagged rasp that cut through the dawn's red haze. "Yield, or watch them fall." He thrust the shard forward, and the rift pulsed, shadows thickening—more knights flickered within, waiting.

"No yielding," Kai snarled, clutching the morpher, its hum a broken whine: "Grid sync critical—form unstable." Green light flared, wolf armor snapping on—claws shaky, fur patchy—but he charged, driven by fury and dread. The nearest knight met him, sword slashing—a green arc that screamed through the air. Kai dodged, claws raking its flank, black ichor spraying, but the blow was shallow, and the knight's counterstrike smashed his chest, sending him skidding across the concrete, armor sparking.

Wonder Woman leapt in, lasso flaring gold—she snared the knight's arm mid-swing, yanking it off-balance with a warrior's cry. "Stay down, child!" she shouted at Kai, spinning to slam her shield into its helm—cracks widened, but it roared, slashing free, forcing her back. Green Lantern John Stewart soared above, ring blazing—emerald constructs snapped into chains, binding two knights, but they strained, swords hacking, and the chains cracked, dark energy seeping through.

Nightwing flipped into the fray, escrima sticks sparking blue—he struck a knight's knee, dodging its blade, then spun to aid Donna, who limped forward, staff cracking another's chestplate. "Focus the rift!" he yelled, voice taut. "Kai, hold them!" Gar shifted to gorilla form, roaring as he tackled a knight—claws met armor, ichor splattered, but it flung him into a wall, concrete crumbling. Raven blasted shadows from Kai's side, tendrils snaring a knight's legs—she grunted, shield flaring as its sword grazed her, a thin cut bleeding red on her arm.

Kai rolled to his feet, wolf form flickering—cracks glowed, the morpher's voice stuttering: "Tiger shift viable—control failing." He didn't care—green surged, armor reshaping, tiger claws lengthening, a roar tearing from his throat. He launched at the first knight, slashing wild—claws gouged its helm, splitting it, revealing Kaelric's face again, warped and hollow. "You're me!" he roared, tackling it, claws rending chestplate—ichor poured, but it seized his throat, slamming him down, concrete cratering.

"Not you," it growled, voice a twisted mirror. "The Grid's wrath—your failure reborn." Its sword rose, and Kai grabbed it bare-handed—armor gone, tiger form lost—energy burned his palms, blood slicking the blade, but he twisted, wrenching it free and slashing its leg. It stumbled, howling, and he staggered back, gasping, the morpher dimming.

Eclipso laughed, shard pulsing—dark energy blasted out, a wave that knocked Nightwing and Donna flat, cracking Raven's shield. John's ring flared, a green wall blocking it, but he grunted, sweat beading— "It's strong!"—and Diana charged Eclipso, sword clashing with his shadow blade, sparks flying. "You prey on weakness," she snarled, pushing him back, but he parried, forcing her to dodge a rift-spawned tendril.

Kai's vision swam—Kaelric's echo surged, green light blinding, and the street dissolved. He stood in the stone hall, torchlight flickering, banners snapping—green and silver, serpent on sword. Kaelric faced the king, shard glowing in his grip, knights at his back—loyal, until they weren't. "You swore," Kaelric said, voice steady, "to guard the Grid with us."

The king smirked, crown glinting, sword drawn. "Oaths bend, Kaelric. Power doesn't." He nodded—shadows moved, guards turning, blades flashing. Kaelric fought—sword clashed, blood sprayed—but a dagger sank into his back, a knight's hand wielding it—Eadric, his second, eyes cold. "For the crown," Eadric hissed, and the king snatched the shard, laughing as Kaelric fell, hall fading to black.

Kai snapped back, screaming, the safehouse street slamming into focus—Eclipso's knights mirrored Eadric's betrayal, their faces shifting—Kaelric's crew, corrupted. "You sold me!" he roared, lunging at the first knight, bare fists pounding its helm—blood smeared, his knuckles split, but it staggered. Raven grabbed him, pulling him back—"Kai, stop!"—but he shoved free, the morpher buzzing: "Memory breach—sync collapsing!"

The rift widened, green light flooding—two more knights stepped through, seven now, and the Titans faltered. Donna smashed one, staff splintering—her ankle gave, and she fell, cursing. Gar—bear form—tackled another, but it slashed his side, green blood oozing as he shifted back, gasping. Nightwing flipped to Raven, sticks sparking—"Close it!"—and she nodded, hands weaving, a shadow dome encasing the rift, straining to seal it.

John's ring flared, a construct cage trapping three knights—they roared, swords hacking, and he grunted, ring flickering. "Can't hold 'em long!" Diana parried Eclipso's blade, lasso snaring his arm—she yanked, slamming him into the ground, but he blasted free, rift tendrils shielding him.

Kai's morpher pulsed, a shard breaking off—pain lanced his arm, blood dripping, and he fell, vision greying. The first knight loomed, sword raised—"Yield!"—but Kai rolled, grabbing the fallen shard, its green light searing his hand. He stabbed it into the knight's chest—ichor erupted, it howled, dissolving into green mist, but the effort dropped him, breath ragged.

"Kai!" Raven shouted, shadows faltering—Eclipso's blast hit her, knocking her flat, blood trickling from her nose. Nightwing dove, shielding her, sticks sparking as he blocked a knight's swing. Donna crawled to Gar, staff propping her up—"We're losing!"—and John's cage cracked, two knights breaking free, charging Kai.

He staggered up, shard clutched—green light surged, armor snapping on, tiger form roaring back, wild and unstoppable. He slashed, claws rending—one knight fell, ichor pooling—but the other tackled him, sword biting his shoulder—blood gushed, armor cracking, and he screamed, slashing blind. The beast took over—claws tore, teeth snapped, Kaelric's fury blending with his own—until the knight dissolved, mist swirling.

Eclipso roared, shard blazing—the rift pulsed, a green wave knocking John from the sky, his ring dimming as he hit the pavement. Diana charged, sword slashing—Eclipso parried, blasting her back, lasso tangling in rift shadows. Nightwing dragged Raven up—"Close it, now!"—and she nodded, hands trembling, shadow dome tightening—cracks spread, but it held.

Kai's tiger form flickered—armor gone, he fell, shard slipping, blood pooling. The last knights advanced—three strong—swords raised, and he braced, defenseless. Then—gunfire barked, rockets screamed—Red Hood roared in on his bike, Slade beside him in a stolen truck, weapons blazing. Seekers scattered, knights turning—Hood's bullets chipped armor, Slade's sword cleaved one's arm, buying seconds.

"Get him out!" Hood yelled, tossing a smoke grenade—grey clouded the street, knights slashing blind. Nightwing grabbed Kai, hauling him back—"Move!"—Raven's dome faltered, rift pulsing—Eclipso laughed, vanishing into it as it snapped shut, knights dissolving, leaving silence.

Kai slumped in Nightwing's arms, blood soaking them, the morpher dim—two shards gone, cracks deep. "Lost 'em," he rasped, vision fading. Raven crawled to him, hands glowing, pressing his shoulder—"Stay with us!"—but her voice blurred.

Diana staggered up, lasso coiled, face grim. "He's retreating—regrouping." John groaned, ring reigniting— "That was too close"—and Donna leaned on Gar, both battered.

Nightwing's jaw tightened. "Safehouse is burned. We need a new base—now."

Kai's head lolled—Kaelric's hall flickered, Eadric's dagger glinting—and a whisper cut through: You failed me. He jolted, gasping—"No!"—and blacked out, the Grid's green web swallowing him whole.
