Chapter 17: The End Of The Trial
Three weeks had passed. As the group descended from the mountain, the air was filled with light chatter and laughter. They reminisced about their time spent training and growing stronger during those intense weeks. Riku and Isaki, in particular, were reflecting on their frequent sparring matches.
"I still can't believe how strong you've become," Riku admitted with a grin, rubbing his shoulder from an old bruise. "Back when we started, I thought we were at the same level, but now…" He paused, shaking his head in disbelief. "You've beaten me more times than I care to count."
Isaki chuckled, feeling a sense of pride. "I guess all that time climbing trees and running after you paid off," he joked. "But don't sell yourself short, Riku. You pushed me to my limit every single time."
Balko, who had been listening, chimed in. "You two fighting all the time was the real entertainment up there." He flexed his arms, feeling the tension in his now much stronger muscles. "But it wasn't just you two who got stronger. Look at this!" He clenched his fists, his knuckles crackling as he coated his hands in a faint shimmer of Aura. "I've been feeling like I could take down a bear with one punch lately."
Jenia smiled, amused by Balko's usual confidence. "And I finally managed to strengthen my fire magic beyond those simple fireballs," she said, her voice filled with excitement. "Now I can control the flames better, even create fire streams. It feels like I'm just scratching the surface, though."
Isaki nodded, feeling the change in all of them. "Yeah, we're all growing stronger. Reaching the second level of Aura is no joke. Being able to channel it more precisely into our attacks... we're getting there."
Riku, who had been silent for a moment, added thoughtfully, "We needed this. Not just the strength training, but the experience of being out here, relying on each other. It feels like we're ready for what's next."
Their conversation soon shifted to lighter topics, as the memory of Balko's encounter with the bees brought laughter to the group.
"Remember that time you climbed up to get honey from that hive?" Isaki teased. "You thought it was going to be a smooth operation until—"
"Until the bees attacked!" Jenia interrupted, giggling. "They sensed your Aura and swarmed you in an instant. You screamed like a kid!"
Balko's face reddened, but he joined in the laughter. "Hey, those bees had Aura! How was I supposed to know they could paralyze me? It was a tactical retreat, not screaming. And if it weren't for the Talisco, I'd still be stuck up in that tree, paralyzed."
Riku snorted, wiping a tear from his eye. "Yeah, tactical retreat. More like you fell out of the tree in slow motion!"
They all laughed, their bond stronger than ever after facing trials both serious and comical on the mountain.
As their laughter faded, the conversation turned more serious. "We were lucky to find more Talisco than we should," Isaki said, his tone thoughtful. "But we didn't manage to gather much Medis. I wish we could have found more; it would have been useful for what's coming."
Jenia nodded in agreement. "Yeah, especially when we leave Dawn village and face tougher enemies."
Riku rolled his eyes. "Maybe we could also find Medis flowers in other mountains outside the village."
The group continued their descent, talking and laughing, feeling a sense of accomplishment from their time spent on the mountain. They had grown in strength, skill, and camaraderie. The challenges they had faced would prepare them for whatever came next.

The four cadets finally descended from the mountain, their steps heavy but hearts filled with pride. The sun had begun its descent, casting long shadows across the landscape as they approached the training grounds. By the time they arrived, it was already late afternoon, and the familiar camp was eerily quiet.
"Strange... where is everyone?" Jenia asked, glancing around the empty field.
"They must've finished early and headed back," Riku guessed, adjusting the pack on his shoulder. "We did take our time up there."
Isaki smirked, throwing a glance at Balko. "We weren't just passing the time. We were the only ones smart enough to stay and really use what the mountain had to offer."
Balko grinned and flexed his arms again. "Well, we've got the strength to prove it now."
Without wasting time, the four headed straight for Instructor Tora's office. They knocked, and a gruff voice called from inside.
"Come in."
Pushing the door open, they found Instructor Tora sitting at his desk, a stack of papers in front of him. He looked up, and a slow smile spread across his usually stern face as his eyes took in the sight of the group. It was clear from their presence alone that they had grown in strength.
"So," Tora began, leaning back in his chair, "you finally came down from that mountain. I was starting to think you had decided to live up there." He chuckled, his gaze sharp. "But looking at you now, I can see you've become stronger. Tell me, what did you learn?"
Riku stepped forward first, a respectful but confident nod accompanying his words. "We learned that it wasn't about finishing quickly. The mountain wasn't just a place for completing the tasks; it was an opportunity to strengthen ourselves, physically and mentally."
Tora nodded, clearly satisfied with the answer. "Exactly. That was the real purpose of sending you up there. You four are the only ones who figured that out. The others…" He shook his head. "They came back after a week, focused only on checking off tasks and nothing more."
Balko, still standing tall and proud, interjected, "Well, we did finish the tasks. Three animal hides and the medical herbs, just like you asked." He took the huge bag he had on his shoulder and placed it on the desk, filled with their collected items.
Tora inspected the hides and herbs briefly, nodding in approval. "You did well. These are in excellent condition." His gaze softened for a moment as he met their eyes. "But more importantly, you stayed. You used the time to hone your skills, to push your limits. That's the real reward."
Isaki crossed his arms, a thoughtful look on his face. "We realized that the mountain had a lot more to offer. The creatures there were stronger, the air was different, even the food—everything felt like it was meant to test and train us. We weren't just surviving, we were improving."
Jenia added with a small smile, "It wasn't easy, but it felt like we grew more in those three weeks than we ever could have in any classroom or field back here."
Tora stood up, moving around his desk to face them. "And that's exactly why I sent you there. The mountain gives back what you put into it. The Aura-infused animals, the herbs, the challenges—they're all designed to make you think beyond the obvious, to make you stronger in ways you didn't even realize."
Balko rubbed the back of his neck, looking both proud and sheepish. "I guess we're just a stubborn group. But I think it paid off."
Tora nodded again, his smile widening. "It did. And you'll see the difference soon enough. Now, as for your tasks…" He motioned toward the hides and herbs, "You've completed everything perfectly. Consider the mountain training officially over."
The group let out a collective breath, a mix of relief and satisfaction settling in.
"Go to the dormitories and get some rest," Tora said, his tone shifting back to his usual authoritative manner. "You've earned it. But be ready—there's an important announcement tomorrow. You'll want to be well-rested for what's coming."
Riku raised an eyebrow. "An announcement?"
Tora simply gave him a knowing smile. "You'll find out soon enough."
With a final nod of gratitude, the four turned to leave, heading toward the dormitories. As they walked away from Tora's office, the atmosphere was lighter, their minds filled with questions about what tomorrow would bring, but also satisfaction from everything they had accomplished.
Isaki broke the silence, smirking. "An important announcement, huh? Any guesses?"
Balko grinned. "Maybe it's a reward for those who stayed on the mountain the longest?"
Jenia rolled her eyes. "Or maybe it's just another round of training."
Riku shrugged. "Whatever it is, we'll be ready."
As they made their way to the dormitories, exhaustion began to settle in, but so did a sense of pride. The mountain had changed them, made them stronger, and prepared them for whatever was coming next.
